Yeshiva Mourns the Loss of HaRav Zvi Teller z"tl |
|
We mourn the loss of HaRav Zvi Teller z"tl, an influential and inspiring figure in our Yeshiva for 31 years. To his many talmidim he was a dedicated teacher of Torah, a voice of encouragement and a role model of piety and middos tovos. To his fellow rebbeim he was a wise colleague, a mentor and a cherished friend. To all who encountered him he was an example of a true talmid chochom, a person to be admired and emulated.
Rav Teller's first role in the Yeshiva was that of High School principal. His fine character and gentle nature endeared him to the bochurim. Despite his Israeli upbringing, Rav Teller had no problem relating to American boys; the meaningful connections he formed with them bridged all culture gaps. Subsequently, he assumed the position of Maggid Shiur - Rosh Yeshiva in the Beis Midrash. It was here that he began a fruitful career of educating and shaping the minds of hundreds of talmidim that studied under him. His deliberate methodology in teaching Gemora coupled with his talent for explaining even the most difficult concepts, allowed his students to progress steadily in their studies and prepare for a lifetime of productive Torah learning. His devotion to the specific needs of each talmid was legendary; their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being was his highest priority.
Our Yeshiva is fortunate to have had the opportunity for more that three decades to learn from, and be inspired by, Rav Teller. May his memory inspire us all to grow as B'nei Torah and strive to meet our spiritual potential.

New Yachad Program a Success |
|

Some of the most important learning takes place outside of the classroom.
The senior class is experiencing this truism as they participate in an innovative program called Banim Atem L'Hashem, in conjunction with Yachad, the OU's division for children and young adults with special needs. Thanks, in large part, to Rabbi Polstein's organizational efforts, each of the three Senior shiurim gets the opportunity one Monday night a month to have dinner and learn with a group of nine Yachad members. All the boys have dinner together and afterwards are paired with study partners for the learning session. Efrem Popel, Director of Chicago Yachad, guides the chavrusos as they learn pirkei avos, the parasha and other Torah topics.
For many of the Yeshiva students, this has been their first interaction with teenagers with special needs and despite an enlightening introductory session with the Yachad Director were unsure of what to expect. But even for those who were anxious initially, the anxiety quickly gave way to feelings of enjoyment and satisfaction. "When I first considered what we were being asked to do", says Yosef Dauber, "I thought 'there is no way I can do this', but once the program got started it didn't take me long to feel comfortable".
The impact on the Yachad members from these interactions, Efrem reports, is tremendous. "They are so excited to be learning in the Yeshiva with the Seniors", says the Director. "After every session they can't stop talking about it; they say 'the guys are so cool' and 'we talk about such interesting things'. Its really a great boost for them."
But the benefit to the Yachad members is only half the story; the Seniors are as excited about Monday nights as their chavrusos. Some students have even requested to sit with the group for an additional turn when its not their week! This program has opened their eyes in so many ways and has made them appreciate this special group of young people. Says Yosef: "these Yachad guys are amazing!" Efrem notes this phenomenon of the Yeshiva students gaining so much: "It is remarkable to watch people's perception of the Yachad members change from that of learners to that of teachers."

| Chanukah Mesibah Inspiration |
The warm, mitzvah-drenched glow of the dormitory students' carefully-arranged menorahs filled the hall, providing a stunning backdrop for this year's FYHS chanukah mesibah. The much-anticipated annual gathering took place in the Yeshiva's dining area on December 6th, the third night of Chanukah. Student council, under the leadership of President Tzvi Yaakov Miretzky, worked hard at decorating the dining room and collaborating with the kitchen staff in choosing a special Chanukah-inspired dinner menu, complete with several delicious desserts. All of the high school rebbeim were in attendance and the crowd was privileged to hear a special Chanukah message delivered by the always inspirational Rabbi Moshe Schecter.
To conclude the uplifting program, the boys were invited to the adjoining Goldberg hall for lively and spirited dancing which was led by the yeshiva's own band. The band, composed entirely of FYHS students, has been meeting regularly as an extra-curricular music program, and has been organized and advised by Beis Midrash student Yaakov Weiner. Despite being only their first public appearance, the ease at which they infused ruach and excitement into the crowd was testament to their many hours of hard work and practice. As the evening eventually came to a close, the menorahs still shone brightly in the background, perhaps alluding to the lasting, positive inspiration that FYHS students inevitably carried with them out into the dark winter months ahead.
