Novominsker Rebbe Visits the Yeshiva |
|
Escorted into the Bais Midrash with the enthusiastic singing of our entire Yeshiva, HaRav Yaakov Perlow, Shlita, the Novominsker Rebbe, honored us with his presence and by sharing words of Torah on a recent Friday morning.
Rav Avraham Friedman, a devoted talmid for the past 40 years, introduced his Rebbe and spoke movingly of the impact that Rav Perlow had on talmidim during his years as a Rebbe in our Bais Midrash four decades ago. The depiction of the bond between Rav Friedman and Rav Perlow served, in itself, as a lesson to the audience as to the power and potential of the relationship between Talmid and Rebbe.
Rav Perlow then spoke to us, first, recalling fondly his "pleasant years" at our Yeshiva and the "nachas" that his visits always bring him. He then proceeded to share some thoughts on a topic related to the Gemara that the Yeshiva is learning. His delivery was so clear and concise that even those in the audience not learning Maseches Kiddushin had no problem following the content and enjoyed it greatly. Afterwards, he spoke of the "great responsibility and privilege" that each talmid has as part of the mesorah - the chain of Torah transmission - and the wonderful opportunity that we have to learn from our exceptional Rebbeim.

| FYHS Students Recognized by National Merit Scholorship Program |
We take great pride in the scholastic accomplishments of our students. In both Judaic and secular studies, year after year, they continue to shine.
One prominent indicator of this excellence is the continuing trend of FYHS students being recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. This past year three of our students, (shown above from left) Toviah Moldwin, Yossi Katzin and Adam Pershan have earned recognition with their high marks on the PSAT. Yossi, by scoring in the top 0.5% of the 1.4 million test takers, has been named a National Merit Semi-Finalist, earning him eligbility to become a Finalist and possibly be awarded a college scholarship. Adam and Toviah, with their notable scores, have earned the status of National Merit Commended Scholars.
Mr Sheldon Schaffel,General Studies Assistant Principal, (shown above at right) notes the significance of these achievements. "The impressive accomplishments of these boys", he remarks, "is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Despite the heavy work load inherent in a full-time, Torah and general studies curriculum, they have risen to the challenge and excelled academically."
We congratulate Yossi, Adam and Toviah on their achievements and wish Yossi success in the next stage of the National Merit Scholarship Program selection process. |
| New Basketball Court Opens |
|
"The fifteen
minute shiur break has never been this much fun!"
The yeshiva has just unveiled a major addition to its expanding recreational facilities, a brand-new outdoor basketball court. Construction began this past September on the area adjacent to the yeshiva's baseball field, and the court was ready for use following the Yomim Tovim. The court, which is also fully lit for nighttime use, is a state-of-the-art, official NBA-sized full-court, and its close proximity to the main building allows students easy accessibility. This new addition is part of a general, ongoing effort to improve sports facilities on campus, which will also include major upgrades to the baseball diamond scheduled this spring. Early reports indicate intense excitement about the new court, and its daily and frequent usage by both dormers and in-towners demonstrates that, once again, the yeshiva has successfully filled a valuable campus need. |

Extra-Curricular Excitement - Something for Every Student |
Fasman Yeshiva High School is filled with excitement about the wide array of programs available to our students. Currently, the Fall tennis tournament has gone from 30 players down to the final four. Our stock market game, where students are competing against other schools in Illinois, boasts two top ten teams including one team in first place. Flag football and intra-mural basketball have made Sunday afternoons a great opportunity to have fun and at the same time build camaraderie and teamwork. Our music program brings together students from all four grades, who play beautiful music at student events, such as the Melava Malka we had the last Motzo'ai Shabbos in October. In fact, during the last three October Motzo'ai Shabbasos we had sports activities under the lights at the park, followed by a wonderful Melava Malka of food and Torah. Close to twenty boys enjoyed the first Astronomy night, where the Moon and the planet Jupiter were observed using a six inch Dobsonian Telescope. The Debate club had their first spirited debate and Digital Photography and Auto Shop plan to begin in November. In the next couple of months, Woodshop, Chess Club and the Art Program will move into high gear.
These programs are all in addition to the outstanding programs that have been part of the Yeshiva for many previous years. There are three after-school learning groups that learn Gemara , Chumash and Halacha. Our Israel Action Committee works to raise money for former residents of Gush Katif. The fitness center, workout room and school newspaper round out the long list of extra-curricular activities which help our talmidim maximize their Yeshiva experience. We look forward to a year of continued learning and fun in our Yeshiva.

| Highlights from YPA Membership Event |
YPA welcomed an overflow crowd to its Annual Membership Event, held on October 21st. Parents heard an introduction by Mr. Ira Clair and a Dvar Torah by Rabbi Mordechai Ginsparg, Assistant Principal. Rabbi Ginsparg also gave an update on the many innovative extra-curricular programs which are being offered this year. Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob then spoke about challenges all parents face raising teenagers, and reinforced the value of the Yeshiva offering the variety of additional programs which Rabbi Ginsparg outlined. Thanks to the speakers and Leah & Alan Cohen who hosted the event and to Ira and Debra Clair for their hard work in coordinating this event.
