Dear FYHS parents and friends,
The new school year has arrived and the excited sounds of talmidim returning to the Yeshiva are in the air. There are new faces in school with smiles to accompany them. We welcome them all and, through this email, begin a new form of communication with our parents and friends. We take great pride in sharing our most recent accomplishments and innovations.

| Ninth Grade and Beis Midrash to team up |
In a groundbreaking venture, the Yeshiva has united its youngest students with its most experienced veterans. A new program has been designed by Assistant Principal Rabbi Mordechai Ginsparg which aims to foster camaraderie between ninth graders and members of the Yeshiva's Beis Midrash. Each participating older student joins with two or three freshmen for a Friday morning study session in the Yeshiva's main Beis Midrash. Collectively, the group plans on completing the entire seder Nashim of Mishnayos by year's end. In addition to the learning goals, the setting naturally encourages friendly conversation, while providing an opportunity to build valuable relationships and introduce younger students to older role-models. |
| Welcome Rabbi Mordechai Ginsparg and Mr. Hillel Efron to their new positions |
As we start the new year, we are pleased to welcome Rabbi Mordechai Ginsparg (shown at left) and Mr. Hillel Efron to their new positions in the FYHS administration.
Rabbi Ginsparg, a graduate of our Yeshiva, earned a Masters Degree in Education from Loyola University Chicago, and has been a Rebbe in our 9th grade for many years. He has distinguished himself in that capacity with his tremendous creativity and boundless enthusiasm and now brings those qualities to our administration in his role as Assistant Principal. In addition to general administrative duties, Rabbi Ginsparg will be working on many fronts to ensure that the high school experience of our students is a positive one. "Of course school is about studying and learning", explains Rabbi Ginsparg, "but it needs to be enjoyable, it needs to be fun, in order to allow the students to thrive and grow as they should." To that end, trips are planned and many extracurricular activities - ranging from auto shop to tennis - are being offered. Rabbi Ginsparg also stresses the need for frequent contact among the students, teachers, administration and parents. "We all need to work together", he says, "and in that way we can ensure that the religious, educational, social and emotional needs of each student are met."
Mr. Efron, also a graduate of our Yeshiva, has been a member of our dorm staff for several years and is a natural fit to assume the job of Dorm Supervisor. During this year, he is taking a hiatus from his studies at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, where he has been pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. His duties include attending to needs of the high school at large, but his main focus is on the physical and emotional well-being of the dormers. "A student living in the dorm," comments Mr. Efron, "faces unique challenges; it is therefore a great opportunity for personal growth and maturation. It is the job of the dorm staff to facilitate that development." As Dorm Supervisor he is responsible for dorm trips and activities, and Shabbos and Yom Tov coordination, as well as seeing to the safety and medical needs of the students. Mr. Efron also emphasizes the need to maintain close contact with parents and encourages parents of dormers to contact him with their ideas and concerns. When discussing his professional philosophy, Mr. Efron's background in psychology becomes apparent. "The students, and especially the dormers, need to feel that everything done for them - every rule, privilege and consequence - is a result of a singular intention: to help them succeed and mature."
We wish Rabbi Ginsparg and Mr. Efron success in their new roles. Their talents and energy will surely benefit our Yeshiva and help each student achieve his potential. |
| First weeks filled with extracurricular activities |
Along with the excellent beginning to our Shiurim and general studies program, our students have been busy with lots of enjoyable activities. The boys have had the opportunity to take some swings at Sluggers (near Wrigley Field), to go into Wrigley Field to see the Cubs lose to the Dodgers, and to go to Soldier Field to see the USA soccer team play Brazil. Additionally, there have been trips to Bowling and Miniature Golf. As part of our extracurricular programs, thirty-one boys are taking part in the Stock Market Game and twenty-seven students are battling in our Tennis tournament. Following the Yomim Tovim, other programs will begin including auto shop, wood shop, intramural basketball and debate. The boys were also happy to receive gym bags on the first day of school with the new logo of Fasman Yeshiva High School printed on the bag. We are also selling polo shirts with the new logo embroidered on the shirt. In October, we plan on having Motzo'ai Shabbos sports activities under the lights at Laramie Park followed by a Melava Malka. We look forward to a year filled with many exciting and enriching opportunities for our students. |
