We went to Rabbit Mountain this morning to see raptors migrating. Rabbit Mountain is well placed for raptor migration because it is at the boundary of the foothills and plains. Birds can use the thermals from the plains or the orographic lifting of the ridges to help them along on migration. Winds out of the north also help viewing possibilities. All the elements were in place, but we did not see a lot of raptors. We may have been there too early, before the birds were really on the move. Give it a try sometime soon either at the east ridge or the Little Thompson Overlook on Rabbit Mountain. My fitbit said we walked over three miles and climbed up the equivalent of 42 flights of stairs..

Broad-winged Hawk

We didn't have the greatest raptor day, but we did have a good show put on by a broad-winged hawk which is rare for Colorado. However, birders do seem to be having a good year for spotting these rare hawks along the Front Range this fall. Note the black and white tail, dark edges on the wings and the heavy barring on the chest. All of the images from today's walk were provided by Dave Christenson except for the golden eagle and Overlook shot which I took this morning.
