July 7, 2012   Partly cloudy, cool and moist. 70°F. 0-3 mph.                                         15 participants.

binoculars and child All creatures were rejoicing this morning. Our dry and hot weather was broken last night by luscious rain. A rooster even come up out of the bushes in front of us and crowed. Sage Trail had thousands of dragonflies working the meadows for flying insects along with the swallows. A wonderful morning.

Grackles (and squirrels) don't like safflower seed much. So you can still get a good variety of birds without being overrun with grackles and squirrels by using safflower in your feeders.

Bird of the Day

Blue Grosbeak

Photos taken on

7/7/12 Bird Walk

When we went to Sage Trail this morning I was hoping to see a blue grosbeak. Sure enough, it was the first bird we saw after getting out of our cars. Other notable birds this morning were a male kestrel being chased by the kingbirds, a common nighthawk put on quite a display, and both Eastern and Western Kingbirds.

The image above was taken by Steve Frye on this morning's walk. The other images are from Neal Zaun also from this morning's walk. Thanks Neal for letting us enjoy your images.
