 June 23, 2012  Sunny and hot. 80°F. 2-10 mph. 22 participants.
binoculars and child Today was bird-on-the-nest day. We found 4 birds on their nests. We also saw a lot of parents feeding recently fledged young. This is why June is one of my favorite birding months.

Grackles (and squirrels) don't like safflower seed much. So you can still get a good variety of birds without being overrun with grackles and squirrels by using safflower in your feeders.

Bird of the Day

Broad-tailed Hummingbird

One of the thrills this morning was watching a female broad-tailed hummingbird catching insects over Boulder Creek. When she was done, she flew a short distance to her nest overhanging the Creek in a cottonwood. We watched her for several minutes and many of this morning's walkers took pictures including the great images here taken by Alison Sheets.
