Colorado Birding Trailcolorado_birding_trail

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has recently published a small booklet highlighting the best birding spots in Southeastern Colorado. This glossy booklet is well organized and informative. It's a must have for local birders and its FREE. The Division has sent us a case of these books to give away. Please stop by the Wild Bird Center to pick up your copy.

National Audubon Society Christmas Birdcounts

Boulder Count, December 14th:
Christmas Bird Counts collect population data on wintering birds, but they are also a way of bonding with fellow birders and having a refreshing and meaningful holiday experience. There are two different ways to participate-as a field birder or as a backyard feeder watcher. Feeder watcher forms are available at the Wild Bird Center. This year's count compiler is Bill Schmoker. You can contact Bill at 720-201-5749 or by email bill.schmoker@gmail.com.

Longmont Count, December 20th
The Longmont Count Circle will be headed up by Ron Harden.
To sign up to participate, contact Virginia Dionigi at rblackmax5@aol.com

For a complete list of Colorado Christmas Count Events click here to the National Audubon Society "Christmas Bird Count."  There are many count areas all over the state. Some are before Christmas and other are after. Please consider doing a count in a more rural area of the state because these places are always needing extra volunteers.

Wildlife Tree Day a Success
group1 image wildlife tree day  group image2
We had a wonderful time making edible ornaments for the birds on December 6th. If you missed the opportunity and would like to know how it's done - just give us a call 303-442-1322. Many thanks to Wild Bird Center Staffer Marlene Bruning for all the help making ornaments. Thanks to our bakers for the lovely treats, Marlene Bruning, Wendy Stuart, and Maureen Phelan from Phelan Custom Framing in Zarlengo Plaza. Maureen is the one who made the fanciful and yummy owl cupcakes. Many of you may have recognized Tara Chace who used to work at the Wild Bird Center many years ago. She was in from Rhode Island with her wonderful daughters. Thanks for the visit. Also, Scott Severs was back to see us and he took our Wildlife Tree Day photos. Always good to see Scott.

Q: What is a ground feeder?

A: In the bird feeding world, a ground feeder is a label used for birds that use feeders and prefer to eat on the ground or other "open" places. They don't have to eat on the ground, but they prefer platform or large hopper feeders close to the ground. Ground feeding birds usually like to be near bushes and weedy cover. All feeder birds will eat on the ground or platform feeders occasionally, but they are not all ground feeders. Chickadees, for example, are perching feeders that will take food off the ground once in a while. Juncos, native sparrows (i.e. not weaver finches like house sparrows), towhees, and doves are all examples of ground feeding birds. Ground feeders will eat sunflower and often prefer millet, whereas perching feeders like nuthatches and house finches love sunflower seeds, but won't eat millet. As a general rule, if you put millet or a mixed seed in a tube feeder for the perching birds, they will throw out the millet getting to what they want - sunflower.junco                                                       junco

In the winter I have more ground feeders, especially juncos, in my yard. We always put out millet sprays for them in our lilac bush. Millet sprays are millet seed heads still on the stalk. We tie 3-5 together with a twist tie (or a ribbon during Christmas) and hang them over a branch in a spot where the birds can peck at it from another branch. Between the millet that falls and the sprays in the bush, we get lots of juncos feeding in our lilac. In fact, we usually have all 5 junco subspecies visiting during the course of the winter. We sell millet sprays at the Wild Bird Center.

Q: Are We in a  flyway?

Flyways are a concept put forth by game managers as a means of regulating waterfowl hunting. They refer to certain corridors like the Mississippi River which ducks and geese concentrate along as they migrate. I believe we are part of the Central Flyway, however, a relatively small number of waterfowl migrate through Boulder County. Many more ducks and geese can be found migrating to our east in places with more water like Kearney, Nebraska.

Songbirds will concentrate along certain geographic features like coastlines, foothills, and rivers, but they don't aggregate in great numbers like waterfowl. The flyway concept does not apply to songbirds well. Their migrations are more spread out across North America.
