Seed Woes

Recently, my seed vendor of 16 years suddenly decided to stop producing seed for us so they could concentrate on supplying big box stores. We have been scrambling to find a quality replacement. Please bear with us as we find another vendor. Seed mixes and bag sizes may also change. As we move along in this process, please let us know what changes are good and which are not so good. The Wild Bird Center is committed to providing the highest quality seeds at reasonable prices.

January '08 bohemian waxwing
Whenever I make a seed order in January, I first check the weather for the week before figuring how much seed I think we will sell. That's because a birds' need for food and consequently a customers' need for seed goes up terrifically the colder it gets. In "warm" Januarys with little snow cover the birds eat a moderate amount of seed. However, in Januarys like last year with heavy snow cover and cold temperatures, the birds are voracious. They need a lot of calories to burn.
We are seeing the first wave of Bohemian Waxwings come into our region from the far north. Waxwings travel in flocks-descending on fruit trees to strip them of their fruits in a matter of minutes. Enjoy them while you can because they may not revisit your yard if all the fruit is gone. One of the best ways to have them visit is a heated bath. Birds that eat dried fruit in the winter like robins and waxwings need to drink a lot of water. An open bird bath can bring these birds in great numbers.
Lots of raptors in January. This month gives us our peak numbers of bald eagles and some northern specialties like rough-legged hawk. To see these birds you don't have to do anything more than drive down country roads. Some of the raptor "hot" spots are Rabbit Mountain, Boulder Reservoir, Valmont Reservoir, Union Reservoir, and Lagerman Reservoir. We have a printable version of the Wild Bird Center Winter Raptor Tour on our website. This map takes you on a loop in between Boulder, Longmont, and Lyons. There are some great roads for raptors on our route, but certainly not the only good raptor roads in Boulder County. |
Ask Steve
Q My birds all look so round and fat. Is it possible for them to eat too much?
A: On cold days birds can often look like little round puff balls. This is not from over eating; the birds are just trying to stay warm. Birds have the ability to hold their feathers away from or close to their bodies. The further away from their bodies they hold their feathers, the more air they trap and that gives them better insulation. ( Think down coat ) Even when it's hot out and the birds are holding their feathers down, a birds' body is only about 2/3 of what you see as the birds' size. So when it's real cold out, the birds hold their feathers out as far as possible and look just like dandelions gone to seed. |
Coffee Trade
Growing coffee in the shade of larger trees is an old concept. That's how the coffee trade first got started. Coffee bushes love to be in the shade which makes richer tasting beans. However, if you put them in the sun they produce more, but they also need more water, fertilizer, and pesticides. At the Wild Bird Center we only sell shade-grown coffee. Not only is this better for the birds by providing some habitat, it also is better in general for the environment and peoples of the coffee regions. We have recently added a new supplier of coffee-Caffe Ibis. All Caffe Ibis Coffee is certified free trade, organic, and shade-grown. It's wonderful coffee. Please come in and try some. What's good for the birds in good for the beans. Save $3.00 off any one bag of shade-grown coffee (see coupon below). | |

International Birding
Several of our customers are lining up international birding and wildlife tours. The Wild Bird Center does not endorse any of these tours, but we wanted to mention them because our customers are leading them. They are with ongoing tour companies so if you miss your opportunity to go this year, you can always book in the future. One trip is to Kenya, East Africa and the other is to New Zealand. You can get information at the store or visit the web sites africanwildernesssafaris.com or discoverdownunder.com. |
A Happy 2008 to you from the Wild Bird Center! We have so much to be thankful for as we reach our 19th Anniversary. It could not have happened without the loyalty of our friends and customers. Thanks to all of you for the support and friendship. We mention this often, but it is no less true, that rarely does a retail store receive so many kind gestures, thoughts, and words as we do from our customers. We are all truly blessed. Thank you! We hope that 2008 will be a happy and healthy year for all of you.
. Happy Birding! -- Steve, Bill, Scott, and Marlene
