Saint Benedict, the founding father of the Roman Catholic monastic movement and the patron saint of Europe, was born in 480, in the southern Umbrian town of Nursia, modern day Norcia. At 19, his father sent him to Rome to study, but he was so appalled at the depravity he saw in the Papal city, he traveled forty miles south to the mountainous region of Subiaco, where he spent three years in total seclusion, living in a cave, and receiving sporadic nourishment from a compassionate shepherd who lowered food to him in a basket. Eventually, he was persuaded to give up his hermitage, to become the local spiritual leader, but his life of solititude and meditation became a model. By the time Benedict was thirty years-old, he had established 12 monastic communities and laid the foundation for the   "Regula"  the doctrine that served as  guidelines for laymen wishing to live a spiritual life pleasing to God that became the pattern for monasteries across medieval Europe.

Today, many of these monasteries are still active communities, welcoming visitors.  An hour's drive  from the noise and bustle of Rome can take you to astonishing architecture in spectacular natural surroundings, and an atmosphere of serenity.

Montecassino Abbey

Founded in 529,  on an ancient pagan site, the monastery became the home of the order of Benedictines. An imposing complex entirely enclosed by walls, it rises 1700 feet above sea level on a vast plateau. The abbey underwent destruction and pillaging by the Longobards in the in the late sixth century, and was rebuilt even more impressively,, so that by the eighth century it enjoyed its greatest splendor, and was worthy of a visit from the great  Charlemagne himself. It 1944 it was heavily damaged during the Battle of Monte Cassino, but it has since been restored. The site has been visited many times by  Popes and other senior clergy, including a visit by Pope Benedict XVI in May 2009. Today, it is a popular tourist destination with guided tours offered year-round. The current monks of Montecassino continue the tradition of producing natural, herbal and biological products, which are purchasable in the abbey's bookshop.

Casamari

The abbey's name derives from  "house of Marius," as it was built on the site of the birthplace of Caius di Mario, the Roman consul who served a record seven terms.

A Benedictine monastery was established here in the 11th century, but following a visit from St. Bernard of Clairvaux in 1134, the abbey became the purvey of the Cistercian monks, and by the early 13th century, it had been completely rebuilt according to the austere architectural canons of the Cistercian style, which explicity eschew all distracting elements. Under the Cistercians, the abbey became a powerful cultural center, diffusing the French  Gothic-Burgundian forms throughout  central Italy. Concealed behind impressive fortress walls,  you'll find  delicate columns, vaulted ceilings, small stained-glass windows, and a lovely cloistered courtyard. The spiritual life of the monks of Casamari centers around common prayer and visitors are invited to observe them in Gregorian chant throughout the week. The monks focus on work to earn a living for themselves, and for the poor and the missions they support.

Fossanova Abbey

Originally a Cistercian monastery, the abbey fell to the Franciscans almost 200 years ago under the reign of Napoleon. It is the finest example of a Cistercian architecture, built in the Burgundian or early Italian Gothic style dating to the late 12th or early 13th century. The  church (1187-1208), closely similar in design to the Casamari Abbey, was built over the remains of an ancient roman villa. The grounds were later enlarged by the Cistercian monks who settled in Fossanova around 1135 A. C.,  turning the complex into a vital spiritual, cultural and artistic center. The fame of the abbey was advanced by visits from renowned guests, such as Pope Innocent III and St. Thomas Aquinas, who died there in 1274. The Friars Minor Conventual, who  have been in charge of the abbey since 1932, receive a large number of pilgrims, and are committed to pastoral activity, especially through the administration of sacraments - the celebration of Sunday Holy masses, with a special attention to liturgy and preaching; baptisms, confirmations and weddings; confessions and spiritual retreats for small, organized groups. Artistic and cultural events often take place in the abbey and the Franciscans take an active role in their management, in collaboration with the Monuments and Fine Arts Office of the Lazio Region.
