Carnival in Rome
Carnivale in Rome was a big deal a century ago, with parties, and races down the via del Corso. Now it's a low key affair, but it's still celebrated, with most activities aimed at the kids, who go to school in costume and throw confetti at each other.

A Carnival Village is set up in the Piazza del Popolo,  and there are parades with street performers, allegorical floats, musicians, Lazio historical groups and opera house actors wearing traditional masks. This year's event begins February 26, and continues through March 6. Log in to www.InRomeNow.com. We'll keep you informed of events as they are announced. Champoluc, Monterosa Mountains, Val di Aosta

Italy is mad for skiing. The settimana bianca, the white week, is a traditional vacation, during which Italians head for the mountains. It's a costly sport, not only because the equipment and cold-weather gear are expensive, but because the price of lift tickets can be prohibitive. This month, we offer two exciting alternatives to traditional downhill skiing, with no ski lift required.

Ciaspole - Racket Skiing

Ciaspole, also known as racket or pole skiing, is basically a combination  of trekking and skiing. One of the oldest recorded winter activities, it is believed to have been introduced in Europe in the 1600s by explorers returning from North America, where they witnessed the apparatus used by native Americans. You'll need a specially crafted shoe and racket to practice the sport. The first shoe models were made from wood, but today, you'll find them in super-lightweight titanium alloys.
It's a slower-paced sport than traditional skiing, allowing you to explore and enjoy the beauty of nature, immersed in the woods, surrounded by the majestic Dolomites. You can choose between already charted ski trails, new mountain paths, trails or fuori piste hidden along the lateral valleys. Whatever the choice, it's prudent to start your adventure with an alpine guide. Skiing with a racket is not difficult but if you're a beginner, an instructor, a basic knowledge of snow science, meteorology, the right ski apparel and gear are mandatory. It's a fairly simple sport to follow and no particular physical preparation is necessary. Your feet should move in a natural manner, as when walking.  Legs should be keep slightly apart to avoid hitting together and ensnaring or entangling the racket between them. The racket is not lifted much to complete a movement - it slides through the snow.

Telemark Skiing

The fast and graceful sport of Telemark, or free heel, is a form of skiing in which the heel is not attached to the binding of the ski. In order to make a turn, the skier drops the knee and raises the heel of the downhill ski, sliding it back while the uphill ski remains in a forward position, allowing him or her to turn.
Compared to fixed-heel Alpine skiing, Telemark offers many more dimensions to the physics of the turn. Archaeological finds reveal that Telemark was practiced for more than 4,000 years in Russia and Scandinavia for transportation, hunting, work and military activities. A modern version was invented by the Norwegian, Sondre Norheim (1825-1897) in Morgedal, which is in the Telemark region of Norway. Although the technique is ideal for the rolling hills and flatter Norwegian terrain, in the 1930s, it lost its appeal to Alpine skiing, which is more suitable for steeper slopes. Telemark skiing rebounded in the 1970s among ski patrol workers in Colorado. The revival soon spread, bringing  the sport back to Western Europe.
Through the 1980s, Telemark skiers used leather boots and long straight-edged skis, making turning a difficult task. In recent years, free-heel skiing has become an easier physical task thanks to the development of plastic boots and shorter parabolic skis. It now has a cult-like following and thousands of skiers are trying it for the first time every year.
You should know the weather, choose your terrain carefully and always be equipped with a shovel, a probe and a transceiver which emits and receives a signal indicating your location, and you should know how to use them. The sport requires strong, healthy knees.

Where to go:

For ciaspole or racket skiing, we've chosen Champoluc in the Monterosa Mountains, in Italy's Val di Aosta region located in upper Piemonte.  It's a quiet, unspoiled village, which has has led in the Alpine tradition of racket skiing for more than a century. Linked to Alagna and Gressoney, it's one of Europe's best kept secrets.
Monterosa is Italy's biggest ski region, with more vertical drop and acreage than many central Alpine ski domains. Spanning three valleys and several village resorts, it's a charming taste of Italy that caters well for piste skiers, with big mountain skiing thrown in for the daring. Monte Rosa, rising 4,633 meters is part of a massif of multiple 4000 -meter peaks that stretch from Monte Moro above Macugnaga in the east to the Matterhorn to the west. Known as the 'pink mountain', the monte rosa, for the pink tint that reflects off the white slopes at sunrise and sunset, its the Alps' biggest, iciest lump of rock, with a highpoint nearly two hundred meters lower than Mont Blanc's 4807-meter summit. You only drop below 4000 meters on two occasions, with more than twenty named glaciers descending on either side.
The Val di Aosta valley is perfect for weekenders or longer term ski vacations on a moderate income and access could scarcely be easier.
