Virgil's AeneadEach year a classic play is presented on the historic grounds of the Imperial Forums. You don't need to understand the language to appreciate the experience of moving through the forum, magically illuminated at night, and hearing these immortal words intoned.Foro di Augusto, Piazza del Grillo 1June 20-August 1, 9:30 pm €30 www.italytickets.it The Miracle PlayersEach year a group of ex-patriate English speakers, using the Imperial Forum as a backdrop, puts on a wacky forty-minute comedy that draws a loyal following. This year marks the twelfth anniversary of
the Miracle Players' first
performance,
they are offering their take on "The History of Rome Part One," which encapsulates some of the funnier moments from previous years'
performances.
As always, the play draws its inspiration from the writings of
Suetonius, Plutarch, Livy, Cicero,

Getaways Rome with the Family - Entertaining the Kids
If you are traveling to Rome with children for the first time this summer, you'll want to arrange a sight-seeing itinerary that makes this city's glorious history come alive. But figuring out where to start can be challenging. Most visitors arriving with young children or teenagers start with a good, guided walking tour of ancient Rome, the Coliseum and Foro Romano. We suggest you continue along that historical path but that you add the Palatine Hill to your itinerary. Located 40 meters above the Foro Romano, archaeological excavations on the Palatine Hill have uncovered settlements pre-dating Rome's foundation. Documentation shows that the hill may well have been the dwelling place of Rome's mythological founders, the twins Romulus and Remus who, according to the legend, were saved as infants and suckled by a wolf.
Time Elevator Before you get started outdoors, step aboard the Time Elevator to learn about Rome's history and how the city appeared in antiquity. This time machine, presented in virtual reality, promises to be a fascinating multi-sensorial experience packed with special effects and a motion-base platform. The presentation lasts from 30 to 45 minutes and runs non-stop daily. Narration is available in five languages. Via SS. Apostoli 20 - Via del Corso, 260 (near Piazza Barberini, Piazza di Spagna) Open 10:30 am - 7:30 pm (Shows begin hourly.) tel 06 0669921823 Ticket price: 11 euro for adults, 8 euro for children up to 12 years. www.timeelevator.it
Bocca della Verità (The mouth of truth) This should be on your "must see-must do list". An enormous bearded bronze mask (dated 1st century AD) measuring 1.75 centimeters, is mounted on a wall in the portico of the historic Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin near the Circus Massimus. According to a legend that dates back to the Middle Ages, if a liar places his or her hand in the mouth of the mask, it will bite! Archeologists now believe that this beautiful sculpture was used as a manhole cover in ancient Rome. Chiesa Santa Maria in Cosmedin Via Bocca della Verità 18 (near the Circus Massimus) tel 06 678 1419 Open 9 am -1pm and 3-6 pm
Knights of Malta From the Circus Massimus, a short stroll of a few kilometers along Via San Sabina brings you to the Aventine Hill and the Piazza Cavalieri di Malta. Peek through the keyhole at the gate of the Knights of Malta (I Cavalieri di Malta). At the end of the garden path to get a perfectly framed view of the dome of St. Peter's, and a postcard panorama of Rome. The Knights of Malta is one of the last surviving orders of knights left over from the Crusades. In fact, the Italian state recognizes their sovereignty, which means there are actually three nations within Rome (Italy, the Vatican, and the Knights of Malta). The palazzo was designed by the great Baroque architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) in 1765. Piazza Cavalier di Malta, Via S. Sabina (Aventine Hill)
Boat Tour Little kids get bored and little legs get tired, so it's a good idea to take a break from walking with a boat tour. For centuries, the Tiber river was the main thoroughfare into and out of the city. Excavations in the 17th century revealed ruins under the river bed, and in 1888, thousands of coins from across the centuries were discovered there. A fleet of boats shuttles up and down the river, allowing passengers to get off and on at docks from the Ponte Garibaldi bridge at Trastevere in the south to the Ponte Duc d'Aosta bridge in the city's north end, near the Stadio Olimpico. Each boat can carry 78 people and makes the 75-minute journey daily, from 7 am to 10 pm, with departures every 5 to 12 minutes. Starting at 7 pm, a sunset cruise includes dinner and live music. Tickets can be purchased at tourist kiosks around town. www.battellidiroma.it
Bus Tour Although several companies offer "hop on, hop off" sightseeing buses, the city-operated double decker 110 is your least expensive and best option. You can get off and on the bus as often as you like, stopping to explore the top sights as you go, but you'll have to wait each time for the next bus to arrive, so many families opt to just stay on the bus, riding around the entire circuit in order to get an overview of the city before beginning to sight see in earnest. There are hostesses on board as well as audio-guides in six languages. The buses depart from the main train station (Termini) from 9 am to 11:30 pm and take you to the Coliseum, Bocca della Verità, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain and Via Veneto. €13 www.trambusopen.it
The Capuchin Crypt This spooky place is a popular destination for many travellers but we wouldn't suggest it for young children. Brave adolescents with a stomach for horror films may enjoy milling around this crypt filled with human bones - thousands of them - collected over the course of hundreds of years, from the 15th through the 18th centuries. The remains of Capuchin monks, they are arranged in elaborate patterns. Perhaps the aesthetics offsets the macabre. A donation is mandatory. The Church of Santa Maria della Concezione Via Veneto 27 (near Piazza Barberini) tel 06 4871185 www.cappucciniviaveneto.it
Borghese Gardens This huge park has everything a child could want, including large grass spaces, a zoo, playgrounds, bikes, pony rides and a pond with paddleboats. After some sightseeing, it's a great place to let kids be kids. Villa Borghese Gardens, entrance at the top of Via Veneto.
The Centrale Montemartini Located in the Ostiense neighborhood just a short walk from the Piramide metro stop, this former power plant has become a favorite of locals and exploring tourists. It houses a collection of ancient sculptures and mosaics from the Capitoline Museums collection in an unusual setting, against the backdrop of early 20th century machinery. Ceveteri: Etruscan Necropolis About 50 miles northwest of Rome, the coastal highway turns off towards the ancient Etrurian city of Caere, today known as Ceveteri. Nothing is left of the original city, but just outside its walls lies one of the most intriguing architectural discoveries of the 19th century: the necropoli of Caere, an ancient Etruscan burial ground. As was their custom, the Etruscans built two cities, one for the living and one for the deceased. Follow a narrow dirt road lined with century-old cypresses that leads to a dead end; park where several acres of tumulo (tombs) overlook a bucolic Roman countryside with flocks of sheep grazing in the valley below. Etruscan cemeteries are cultural barometers, revealing the architectural and artistic development from the seventh to the third centuries BC. www.italyheaven.co.uk/cerveteri.html

Parco dei Monstri (Monster Park) Located just outside Viterbo, Bomarzo Park is a 16th century villa with grotesque stone sculptures of monstrous proportions, depicting mythological personalities and creatures taken from classic fables: Pergasus, Hercules, Neptune, Cera. Prince Pier Francesco Orsini built the villa in 1552. Mourning the death of his wife, Giulia Farnese, he erected a temple and statuary in her honor on the grounds. Giovanni Bettini purchased the property in 1954, eventually opening it to the public. Open daily year round, 8 am to sunset. Adults €9, children €7 tel 0761 924 029 www.bomarzo.net
Il Giardino dei Tarocchi (The
Tarot Garden) Set on a hillside overlooking the picturesque Tuscan coast, this is a great place to enjoy art on multiple levels. Children will love the colorful, whimsical sculptures created by Niki De Saint Phalle, who spent more than two decades creating them. Born in France, and raised between New York and Europe, de Saint Phalle began her adult life as a stunningly gorgeous and eccentric top model. But she was also a voracious reader and daring artist whose declared inspirations were American comic books, Antonio Gaudì's "Parc Guell," and the early horror movies of Hollywood. When asked why she chose Tarot as her theme, the artist, who has created children's parks throughout the world, answered, "Life is like a card game, and we are born not knowing the rules, but each of us must continue playing the hand we are dealt." Pescia Fiorentina near Capalbio (southern tip of Tuscany) Open 2:30-7pm Open April 1 through October 1 tel 05 64895 122 www.nikidesaintphalle.com
