What's on in Rome for the month of June, 2009During the first weeks of June, cultural activity in Rome slows down, as the city takes a deep breath before exploding into the summer festival known as the Estate Romana, when events move out of doors and Romans leave their fans and air-conditioners to enjoy the fresh night air. During late June, July and early August, the city is bustling with music, theater, dance and art events. Many of these tend to be announced late, but we've pulled together as much as we could find to give you advance notice of what's ahead. Check out our Rome Summer Preview listings below. And while we're enjoying the summer nights, we prefer dining al fresco, so we've given you a list of our favorite restaurants with atmospheric outdoor seating. Enjoy the month! Joie and Vikki

Getaways: 10 Places to Dine Al Fresco on a Roman Summer Evening
When the nights turn warm, Rome's sidewalks and piazzas are filled with tables as the city's restaurant life moves outdoors. Most establishments don't have air-conditioning, and with the evenings so glorious, who'd want to eat inside, anyway? We've chosen some of our favorite places for al fresco dining, where the food is good and the atmosphere is magical.
Boccondivino Housed in a 16th century palazzo, in the warm months, a terrace faces Santa Maria in Campo Marzio and its quiet piazza. The menu reflects what's fresh and in season. Owner Daniele Costantini prides himself on excellent versions of classic pastas such as amatriciana and cacio e pepe. The signature dishes also include duck breast with figs and port wine, spaghetti in pesto sauce with vongole veraci (sweet little clams) and salmon in a poppy and sesame seed crust. The desserts are nothing short of awesome. Try their twist on the classic tiramisù, with hot fudge sauce. The wine list is extensive, including more than 200 labels. Piazza in Campo Marzio, 6 tel. 06.683 08626 €€€ www.boccondivino.it
Maccheroni Piazza delle Coppelle feels like a big party on a summer night. Tables from various restaurants seem to mingle one into the other. The noise level is merry, the wine flows and laughter resounds against the Renaissance buildings. Our favorite spot for a low cost meal al fresco is Maccheroni, a simple, traditional trattoria, serving excellent Roman pastas, classics like rigatoni alla gricia made with pecorino cheese, guanciale (an unsmoked bacon from the cheek of the pig) and black pepper, or simple pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil. Piazza delle Coppelle 44 tel 06 683 07895 €€www.ristorantemaccheroni.com
Roma Sparita This is one of the best spots in town for outdoor dining. The setting is charming, the food is good, and the price is reasonable. Although the church of Santa Cecilia, built on the spot where the saint was allegedly martyred, is a stop on many tourist routes, the piazza is just far enough off the beaten track to maintain an air of traffic-free calm. Roma Sparita, meaning the Rome that disappeared, is the name often given to the Trastevere district, and it certainly seems appropriate at this address, perfect for a relaxing meal on warm days when the outside tables afford a view of the square with its ancient architecture still intact. And the food is good, an excellent value for the price. At night, the pizza oven is fired up, but at lunch, don't miss the delicious cacio e pepe, a Roman pasta specialty, served here in a basket made of cheese; or the rigatoni alla Norma, the linguini with fresh shellfish, and in season, the perfectly crisp fried artichokes. For dessert, try the hot apple tart with homemade ice cream. Piazza Santa Cecilia 24 tel. 06.580 0757 Closed Monday €€ www.romasparita.com
Pierluigi Just steps from the larger Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Farnese, Pierluigi's tables sprawl across the smaller and quiter Piazza dei Ricci, named for the splendid Renaissance palazzo that dominates it. We were regulars for years, but shied away when a change in the management and the kitchen resulted in surly service and inferior food. But we're happy to report that Pierluigi has recently returned to its former standards. We love the seafood, a speciality here, from antipasti to pastas and main dishes. Piazza dei Ricci 144

Il Palazetto With its splendid ivy-clad garden and terrace overlooking the Piazza di Spagna, this is one of Rome's most coveted hideaways. Tucked away on the sloping terrain of the Pincio Hill, it's shielded from the braying voices of passing tourists and excited teenagers who sprawl along the steps. In the first century B.C. ,the area was known for the magnificent Lucullan banquets. Perhaps that tradition still reigns. The restaurant and wine bar occupy the second floor of an elegant 16th century palace, property of Roberto Wurth, Hassler Hotel owner and founder of the renowend Wine Academy, which occupy a part of the premises. The upper floors of the palace house a four-room boutique hotel. Chef Vincenzo di Tuoro is careful to maintain the integrity of traditional Mediterranean cooking, using fresh ingredients and offering innovative accents to old themes like confit di baccalà served with purè di ceci (a hard white legume), or veal topped with grated smoked ricotta served with beans seasoned in a balsamic sauce. The restaurant offers a staggering wine selection of some 400 labels and gracious, hospitable service. Vicolo del Bottino 8 (Via Trinità dei Monti) Lunch 12 - 3:30 pm, and Dinner from 7:30 pm - 10:30pm. Wine Bar 4 pm on. Closed Mondays. tel 06 699 341000 €€€ www.ilpalazzettoroma.com
Gusto 28 (Pesce e Ortaggi) It doesn't matter what time you decide to pop into Gusto 28. Food and drinks are served in the outdoor garden and patio throughout the day. Rows of black metal lacquered chairs and tables are shaded by an arcade supported by monolithic columns of Fascist era architecture. Seating is arranged so as to maximize the view of Rome's theatrical backdrop: directly in front of you is Emperor Augusto's mausoleum. Un-kept and abandoned, the ancient structure rises from below street level like an aged lover vying for attention, a testament to Rome's golden past and just one example of the four architectural styles championed in the piazza. The menu offers cooked or raw fish, pasta and risotto and a limited selection of meat dishes. Mid-morning, a choice of vegetarian sandwiches, fresh fruit drinks, teas and coffee are available. As the lunch hour grows nearer, box lunches at a fixed price, as well as a selection of salads and other dishes are added. Segueing into dinner, the menu repeats a few dishes offered at lunch adding more elaborate choices. The wine list offers an excellent selection of domestic reds and whites. Gusto 28, Piazza Augusto Imperatore 28 tel 06 6813 4221 €€€ www.gusto.it
Margutta Vegetariano There are few more pleasant and luxurious streets to dine on in Rome than Via Margutta. Backed against the Pincio Hill between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna, the quiet, tree-lined street was once an artist's enclave, inhabited by painters, sculptors and artisans. Today, it's decidedly upscale, with elegant art galleries, antiques shops, restaurants, a mini-mall, a state-of-the-art boutique hotel and private residences. For the past 30 years, Ristorante Margutta has been Rome's flagship vegetarian restaurant. The menu changes with the season to adapt to available produce, which is largely organically grown. Pastas and desserts are made in house daily from organic flours. Dining on the terrace, your attention is drawn to the dripping foliage of the Pincio in the background, as you catch glimpses of the well-groomed and often colorful characters parading by. Outdoor seating is limited to 30 places. Jazz evenings, the last Tuesday of every month. Margutta Vegetariano, Via Margutta 118 tel 06 326 50577 €€€ www.ilmargutta.it
Santa Lucia The restaurant draws a lively clientele and is always fully booked, especially during warmer months when terrace seating is available. It's justly proud of its celebrity clientele. Repeat customers inlcude Bill Clinton, Giorgio Armani, Sophia Loren, Martin Scorsese, Leonardo di Caprio and a galaxy of Italian film stars. The sweet summer air, the gaiety in the streets and the leafy setting are intoxicating. Neapolitan cuisine. Fresh fish served daily. Santa Lucia, Largo Febo 186 (Piazza Navona) tel 06 688 02427 closed Tuesdays €€€ www.santaluciaristorante.it
San Teodoro Sheltered on a medieval street, between the Palatine Hill and the Campidoglio, with the Roman Forum nearby, critics have hailed this trattoria as a sanctuary of genuine Mediterranean cuisine. The chef sticks to fresh fish and authentic Roman cooking, using ingredients bought daily at nearby markets, and all the pastas are made in house. Dining in the garden, backlit with the deep colours of the Roman sky can be a romantic experience. San Teodoro, Via Dei Fienili 49 tel 06 678 0933 Closed Sunday €€ www.st-teodoro.it
