The holiday season in Rome officially begins with the Feast of the
Immacolata, celebrated by the pope, who crowns the head of the Virgin
Mary's statue in Piazza di Spagna and continues through the Feast of
the Ephiphany on January 6, celebrated with toys and gifts for the kids
and, of course, a big meal. This year, in a surprise move, the mayor's
office, which saw fit to cancel the acclaimed "Notte Bianca", when
summer ends and all Rome stays up all night, has reversed its claim of
budget problems and proclaimed "Rome Christmas City 2008" with some 442
concerts, events and exhibits, in a non-secular effortto underline the
Eternal City's role as cultural capital of Christianity. Read on.....
