The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape possesses supple red and black fruit, charcoal, olive, resiny Provencal herb, and beef juice characteristics. It is a silky-textured, medium to full-bodied 2007 to enjoy over the next 7-8 years.

Beaune resident Alain Corcia also has a portfolio of Burgundy wines, but some of his finest work is done in the Rhone Valley where his sympathies and passions seem to rise above his feelings for his Burgundy selections. His 2007 Rhone Valley portfolio includes the finest wines he has put together in the history of his firm. Corcia is a dedicated family man and labels all of his Collection Alain Corcia Chateauneuf du Papes after his family members. He also fashions a selection of the finest two barrels which he calls the Creme de la Creme. Each of the following wines represents about 200-250 cases, with the total Chateauneuf du Pape production around 1,500 cases. Corcia's three children are represented by the Herve, Raphael, and Julie cuvees. While these wines are all similar in style, they do have minor differences. - Wine Advocate #185

In the same style is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Elisabeth Chambellan Vieilles Vignes, which is richer and rounder, but still an effusively fruity, full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape made in a pure, totally seductive, sexy style. Both wines are aged completely in tank and large wood foudres.

As usual, the Domaine du Pere Caboche is one of the first estates to bottle, and their 2008s are consistent in their upfront fruitiness, charm, seductiveness, and easy drinkability. Both 2008s are good. I reviewed the 2007s from bottle last year in issue #179, and I have repeated those reviews. - Wine Advocate #185

CHARACTERISTICS:
A hedonist's dream! This delicious, concentrated wine has aromas of black currants, ripe plums, dark cherry licorice, and cocoa. It has a silky full bodied entry on the palate, with tamed/controlled tannins, plenty of sweet oak, and a luxuriously long finish. With proper storage, this wine will age admirably for ten years, however, we feel it is drinkable now. Great with a juicy T-bone steak.

CHARACTERISTICS:
The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, dense purple color with a ruby hue. It has a fragrant bouquet of bright blue berries and violets. The taste has notes of oak, chocolate, cream de cassis, coconut, smoke and black currant: followed by a velvety finish. A wine with abundant opulence and intensity. With proper storage this wine can easily develop over the next 10 to 12 years.

Chardonnay Napa Valley 2007             Mills Price  $29.99

Our first vintage of Chardonnay dates way back to 1983 from vines planted on our estate that were then just three years old; subsequently, more were added in 1990 when we T-budded a few rows over from Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chardonnay on the estate is planted with 7x12 bilateral cordon and dry farmed. Chardonnay now totals 2.9 acres of the 14.8 acres planted on our estate. Today, we enhance our Oakville estate with a small amount of fruit sourced from The Garvey Vineyard in St. Helena, located on East Zinfandel Lane.

Zinfandel Old Vines Napa Valley 2006          Mills Price $31.99

Nils Venge has been making Zinfandel since 1992. The majority of each vintage has come from Zinfandel grapes grown on the floor of the Napa Valley near St. Helena, California. In 1994, an additional small lot of grapes came from the Monte Rosso vineyard in Sonoma which is owned by the Martini Family. Nils always blends a little Cabernet Sauvignon into each vintage to add depth. Our Zinfandel is always treated to 100% brand new American oak and is no exception to the rule of "meal-in-a-glass" Zinfandels. The Saddleback Zinfandel has gained quite a reputation as a "monster Zin" and is in great demand. This wine has a track record of selling out within 30-45 days of release.

ARGER MARTUCCI VINEYARDS

From Peter:  I led a delegation to California in July of 2008.  The biggest surprise and best of visit quality wise was a VERY small winery and vineyard right in the heart of Napa (St Helena) that nobody had ever heard of Arger Martucci!

Since that day in July I have been trying to convince this cult vineyard to send wines to Maryland.  I was, surprised, shocked and gratified when Mills was notified on Wednesday that we had been selected to premier their wines in Maryland!

Founded in 1998 by Dr. Kosta Arger and Richard Martucci this winery on Inglewood Ave.  in the heart of Saint Helena has been a major cult classic ever since.  Dr. Arger is the official winemaker, with Jeff Martucci assisting him!  Dr. Arger is a "dyed in the wool" Burgundy freak!  His Pinot Noir vineyards off Dealey Lane in Carneros (right next to the Golf Course) are amongst the oldest and finest and are planted, naturally, in true Burgundy clones.

Dr. Arger only produced 610 Cases of Pinot Noir in 2004.  Most has already been sold directly from the vineyards.  It has loads of spice and a very long finish just like his favorite Red Burgundies!  They have NEVER sent a bottle for review or entered it into a competition.

On the other hand, Their 2004 Napa Cabernet is a medal HOG, garnering Silver Medals at the 2008 California State Fair, The 2009 San Diego International Wine Competition, and the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Competition.  This is a huge Cabernet with exploding fruit and lots of body.   They only produced 986 cases of their Cabernet. 

These are really small numbers.  When you consider that Phelps produces between 13,000 and 17,000 cases a year of Insignia you can see how truly exclusive the Arger Martucci wines really are!
