At Mills we are expanding our Champagne
and Sparkling Wine selection, even though most wine retailers are cutting back
this area. Last Fall and Winter our
customers bought sparkling wines in record numbers and we hope to bring to you
the finest collection of bubbly in our entire region. With that in mind we hope to reintroduce you
to Ruinart, the First Champagne house EVER!
Mills and the House of Ruinart go back to 1971 when we first started
carrying the Champagne with the Baron Phillippe Rothschild name on it, produced
by Ruinart. Even then it was clear that
this was a Champagne
of extreme quality. Here's the Dom Ruinart story. How much of the first part is true we cant determine, but it is a story
afterall.
Dom Perignon, of course, was the Benedictine Monk credited with the discovery of Champagne. He was, in fact, blind. His ever present sidekick was Dom Thierry
Ruinart, a brilliant scholar and author and an amature oenologist. One story has Perignon discovering how to make Champagne and Ruinart discovering how to make the cork work. What we do know, is that Dom Thierry Ruinart became a fixture at many of
Europe's Royal Courts and that everywhere he went he brought Champagne and
promoted it throughout the empire, he could be called the Johnny Appleseed of Champagne!
In 1729 his nephew Nicholas started the House of Ruinart. This is, without question, the first known Champagne house! In 1782, Ruinart was the first to purchase and dig the famous chalk pits
in Reims that have become the cellars of all
the major brands. Ruinart remained as
Champagne royalty, through relationships with the Rothschilds and others, and
was finally purchased by Moet in 1963, who has fanatically kept the Champagne the
same as years before.
At Mills we adore this Champagne! If there is a more elegant Champagne on the market we'd like to see
it! This is NOT a blockbuster! The bubbles are microscopic, the fruit in the
nose and on the palate is exquisite.
The Rose Champagne. Well, there
are those who swear this is the finest Rose Champagne produced. While we think that there are a few other
Rose Champagnes
in this class, once again the elegance of the Ruinart is unparalled! This is class at its extreme!

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Brut
The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs is a great introduction to the house style.
This elegant, fragrant wine offers up an array of smoke, toastiness,
minerals, ripe pears and flowers. The medium-bodied NV Blanc de Blancs
offers tons of clarity and precision at this level, with the lingering
Ruinart sweetness on the finish. From Wine Advocate #180
Nationally Advertised Price: $84.99
Mills' Customer Price: $69.99

Ruinart Rosé
The NV Brut Rose is made in a similarly elegant and refined style, even
though it isn't quite as expressive as the Blanc de Blancs at the
outset. With time in the glass the Pinot qualities come through with
greater focus. The NV Rose offers excellent length and a polished
personality in the signature Ruinart style. From Wine Advocate #180 Nationall Advertised Price: $89.99
Mills' Customer Price: $69.99

Cruzan Single Barrel
A real stand-out, and one of my favorites. This rum is big and creamy
in the front of the mouth, but surprises with a very long finish
accented with hints of earth and spice. Forbes' 10 Remarkable Rums

English Harbour 5 Year
It's pale color-almost like dry sherry-is mirrored in the flavor; this
is the most delicate and refined of rums, with an almost feminine
character. The longer it sat in the glass, the more elegant and
polished it became. Forbes' 10 Remarkable Rums
Regular Price: $33.99 Mills' Customer Price: $30.59
