Talk Like a Pirate Day! Hosted by Fiction Addiction
Greenville, SC, August 20, 2012 - Aarrrrgh! Talk Like a Pirate Day be Wednesday September 19th! Come celebrate at Fiction Addiction on Wednesday, September 19th, from 4-6pm. Greenville's own Melinda Long will be at the store signing copies of her best-selling pirate picture books, How I Became a Pirate and Pirates Don't Change Diapers (Harcourt, hardcover, $16.99 each), and the companion book, Pirates Activity Book (Harcourt, paperback, $6.99). Everyone dressed as a pirate will receive 10% off their purchase, and we will be serving pirate-themed refreshments and hosting pirate activities.
In How I Became a Pirate, Jeremy Jacob joins Captain Braid Beard and his crew in this witty look at the finer points of pirate life by the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon and the storyteller Melinda Long. Jeremy learns how to say "scurvy dog," sing sea chanteys, and throw food . . . but he also learns that there are no books or good night kisses on board: "Pirates don't tuck." A swashbuckling adventure with fantastically silly, richly textured illustrations that suit the story to a T.
In the hilarious follow-up, Pirates Don't Change Diapers, the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, and that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey!
Melinda Long began her writing career on a rainy day when she was six. Her mother, tired of hearing how bored Melinda was, told her to write a story about Yogi Bear and his friends. She even gave Melinda a typewriter to use. It was so much fun, Melinda just kept writing. Now it's one of her favorite things to do. Melinda lives in South Carolina, not far from two pirate hangouts. She enjoys reading, acting, and visiting schools to talk to kids about writing. In addition to her best-selling pirate books, Melinda is also the author of The Twelve Days of Christmas in South Carolina.
If you cannot make the signing, you can reserve a personalized copy of any of Ms. Long's books by contacting Fiction Addiction in advance at 864-675-0540 or at info@fiction-addiction.com.
