A rising star in the Republican Party shares her inspirational memoir of family, hope, and the power of the American Dream.

Decades before their daughter surprised the nation by becoming governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley's parents had a dream. Ajit and Raj Randhawa were well-educated, well-off Sikhs in the Punjab region of India. But despite their high social status, the Randhawas wanted more for their family - the opportunities that only America could offer.

So they left behind all they had known and settled in Bamberg, South Carolina (population: 2,500). As the first Indian family in a small Southern town in the early 1970s, the Randhawas faced ignorance, prejudice, and sometimes blatant hostility. Nikki remembers stopping at a roadside produce stand with her father, who always wore his traditional Sikh turban. Within minutes, two police cars pulled over to make sure they weren't thieves.

But the Randhawas taught their children that they should never think of themselves as victims. They stressed that if you work hard and stay true to yourself, you can overcome any obstacle. The key is believing that can't is not an option.

The family struggled to make ends meet while starting a clothing business in their living room, eventually growing it into a multi-million-dollar success. At age twelve, Nikki started to do the bookkeeping and taxes after school. After graduating from college and entering the business world, she watched business owners like her parents battle government bureaucracy and overregulation.

Her frustration inspired her to get into politics and run for the state legislature. The first campaign, against an entrenched incumbent, led to racial and religious slurs and threats - but Haley, like her parents, refused to back down. She won on a promise to fight for reform, lean budgets, and government accountability, which is exactly what she did - much to the dismay of South Carolina's old guard politicians.

Soon she had a reputation as a conservative leader who could get things done. In the same state where her family was once ridiculed, she inspired a diverse grassroots following. In November 2010, she was elected South Carolina's first female governor and first non-white governor, and only the second Indian American governor in the country.

Haley's story, as told first hand in this inspiring memoir, is a testament to the power of determination, faith, and family. And it's proof that the American Dream is still strong and true in the twenty-first century.

Nikki HaleyNikki Haley was elected the 116th Governor of South Carolina in 2010. One of the strongest fiscal conservatives in state government, she was first elected to represent the 87th District in Lexington County in 2004, when, as a virtual unknown, she beat the longest serving state legislator in a Republican primary. In 2008, Representative Haley was sent back to the Statehouse with 83 percent of the vote - the highest percentage earned by any lawmaker facing a contested South Carolina election that year. She then won the Republican Party nomination for governor in June of 2010.

Governor Haley's time in Columbia has been marked by conservative leadership and an unwavering commitment to the taxpayers' bottom line. She has fought wasteful spending at every turn, pushed for smaller, more efficient government, and led the fight for accountability and transparency that, before her arrival, was sorely lacking in the legislature.

For her efforts to cut taxes and slow the growth of government spending, Nikki was named "Friend of the Taxpayer" by the SC Association of Taxpayers and a "Taxpayer Hero" by Gov. Mark Sandford. She has lifetime "A" ratings from the South Carolina Club for Growth, the Palmetto Family Council, and the National Rifle Association. She has also received the Palmetto Leadership Award from the SC Policy Council for her expertise on policy matters, and the Strom Thurmond Excellence in Public Service and Government Award from the SC Federation of Republican Women for the outstanding constituent service she provided to her district.

After her first job as bookkeeper for her family's clothing store, Nikki went on to graduate from Clemson University with a B.S. in Accounting and, following her graduation, worked as Accounting Supervisor for the Charlotte, NC-based corporation FCR, Inc., and five of its subsidiaries. She then went back to the family business, where she helped oversee its growth into a multi-million-dollar operation.

Governor Haley and her husband Michael, a full-time federal technician with the South Carolina National Guard and an officer in the Army National Guard, attend Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Lexington, SC. They have two children.
