Thresholds
Thresholds by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
(Viking, hardcover, $15.99, releases 8/5)
Thresholds, Hoffman's first YA novel, is every bit as good as her adult books and she continues to be my favorite fantasy writer. Thresholds is a great coming-of-age story and is suitable for teens and younger kids reading above grade level.

Unfortunately, Monty has both a small-time crime boss and a bad cop out to get him and so he can't put his past behind him just yet. Monty is an anti-hero everyone will be rooting for.

This Must Be the PlaceThis Must Be the Place by Kate Racculia
(Holt, hardcover, $25.00)

A mysterious thread weaves through the lives of Mona, her daughter Oneida and Arthur, the man who shows up on their doorstep seeking closure for the death of his wife, Amy.  Kate Racculia tells the story so well with the voices, the actions and thoughts of these quirky characters that many times I forgot about the mystery only to be surprised by reminders that kept me turning pages to a realistic, satisfying ending.

 Heart Lies
Heart of Lies by M.L. Malcolm
(HarperCollins, paperback, $13.99)
Heart of Lies is many things: it is a family saga, a history lesson into what Hungary and Shanghai were like between the wars, a novel of espionage, a wonderful love story; and, most importantly, it is the story of an extraordinary person, Leo Hoffman, and his tale of survival.  I anxiously await the sequel, Heart of Deception, so I can follow more of Leo's fascinating life.

Sean, who grew up poor, believed that one day he could provide a home that would be "a place of miracles." Just before midnight, on the night of a full moon, a young barber stays out past his bedtime to go to work. Although his customers are mostly regulars, they are anything but normal-after all, even monsters need haircuts. Business is steady all night, and this barber is prepared for anything with his scissors, rotting tonic, horn polish, and stink wax. It's a tough job, but someone's got to help these creatures maintain their ghoulish good looks.
