Greetings!
This first week of July we not only celebrate our country's independence, but also the independent businesses around the country who work hard to employ your friends and neighbors and keep your hard-earned dollars in your community to pay for roads, schools, and more.
Here's the indie declaration of independence:
"When in the course of human events, it becomes appropriate for communities to assert their independence, to denounce uniformity and celebrate their uniqueness, a respect for freedom and human creativity requires independent businesses and peoples to declare those elements which make them interesting."
The easiest way to celebrate Independents Week (July 1st-7th) is to simply shop independent and we appreciate your patronage this week and throughout the year! |

July Store Picks
Crashers by Dana Haynes (Minotaur, hardcover, $24.99)
The National Transportation Safety Board personnel who investigate airplane disasters are called 'Crashers'. Haynes introduces us to a diverse group of these specialists, who I hope are the basis for a new series. In Crashers, Dr. Leonard "Tommy" Tomizak is a pathologist who finds himself in charge of an investigation despite the fact that he resigned from the NTSB under a cloud of failure a few months earlier. A great thriller from a new author, but not for the faint of heart! - Recommended by Nancy McFarlane, store employee
For any couple wanting to have (or avoid having) a baby, this is a comprehensive guide to everything fertility-related. From charting your body's fertility indicators to interpreting the charts, this is the go-to resource for any woman wanting to get to know her body better. - Recommended by Melissa Oates, store employee and mother of two Black Water Rising by Attica Locke (HarperCollins, paperback, $14.99)
Fans of Greg Isles and Dennis Lehane, as well as those interested in a different view of the civil rights movement, will like this thriller about Houston lawyer Jay Porter whose past as a civil rights worker comes back to haunt him when he innocently saves a woman from drowning and finds himself ensnared in a murder investigation.
- Recommended by Nancy McFarlane, store employee
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic, paperback, $8.99)
The first book in this YA hit series is finally releasing in paper! In a post-apocalyptic world 16- year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers for the fight-to-the-death "Hunger Games" to save her younger sister. Recommended for fans of Graceling.

Here, There Be Dragons by James Owen (Simon & Schuster, paperback, $9.99)
