April's Store Picks
Edgar-award winning NC author John Hart has quickly become my favorite mystery writer and The Last Child is his best book yet. 14-year-old Johnny Merrimon, whose twin sister has been missing for over a year, is a character who will touch your heart with his quest, against all odds, to find his sister. - Recommended by Jill Hendrix, store owner
Accompanied by beautiful illustrations, the author puts a different spin on fairy tales and poetry using a technique she calls "reverso" -- the same words, the same lines, the same poem, but with a new meaning when read up instead of down. Fascinating for parents and children.
- Recommended by Melissa Oates, store employee and mother of two
Wrongful Death by Robert Dugoni
Pocket, Paperback, $7.99
Wrongful Death mixes the suspense of a Grisham legal thriller with the politics of a Baldacci one. David Sloane has won 18 jury trials in a row. But, he has never sued the US Government before. Despite case law which makes the case virtually unwinnable, he cannot refuse the request of the widow of a guardsman killed in Iraq who believes faulty body armor was to blame.
- Recommended by Nancy McFarlane, store employee
Vintage, Paperback, $10.00
Not just a book for the aspiring poet, Letters to a Young Poet is brimming with life advice. Rilke gave me my own personal motto in this book, "Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." Highly recommended for the person facing pivotal change in his or her life.
- Recommended by Cyndi Clack, store employee
Holt, Paperback, $15.00
This modern-day ghost story sucked me right in to Hallie James' life as she strives to learn more about the mother she never know. Though set primarily on a Great Lakes island, The Tale of Halcyon Crane has the feel of a Southern gothic -- creating an eerie atmosphere that creeps up on you gradually. - Recommended by Jill Hendrix, store owner
Forge, Paperback, $7.99
Jon Land introduces us to Caitlin Strange, a fifth generation Texas Ranger who leaves her beloved Rangers and changes careers because of a shootout she was involved in. The reappearance of her husband (who was declared dead in Iraq) as a John Doe in the hospital where she now works as a psychological therapist, and the subsequent attempt on his life draw her back into the center of action and a strange alliance with Cort Wesley Masters who she blamed for the shootout which ended her career. The action, while a little over the top in places, is fast and furious, and the characters are ones you hope will appear in future books.

Featured Release If I Stay by Gayle Forman (Speak, Paperback, $8.99, releases 4/6/10)
The last normal moment that Mia, a talented cellist, can remember is being in the car with her family. Then she is standing outside her body, watching herself and her little brother being tended by paramedics. As she ponders her state (Am I dead? I actually have to ask myself this), Mia is whisked away to a hospital, where, her body in a coma, she tries to decide whether to fight to live. Teen readers of Nicholas Sparks will devour this romantic novel.
