Fiction Addiction Newsletter

www.fiction-addiction.com March 2010
Dear Fiction Addiction customer,

I'm pleased to announce a great Book Your Lunch lineup for our April-June session: Ron Rash and Karen White will be returning; we snagged southern favorites Mary Alice Monroe and Ann B. Ross; and local treasures Mindy Friddle and George Singleton will also be featured. We're expecting a great turnout for these events, so we encourage you to sign up early in case they sell out. We're also still taking signups for our two March events featuring Patricia Sprinkle and Shirley Twiss.
March Events
Saturday, Mar. 13th, 1-3pm: Wendy Wax Signing
Magnolia WednesdaysWendy Wax will be signing copies of her new book, Magnolia Wednesdays (Berkley, paperback, $15.00), at Fiction Addiction on Saturday, March 13th from 1-3pm. In Magnolia Wednesdays, 41-year-old ex-investigative journalist Vivien Armstrong Gray finds herself pregnant, jobless, and very hormonal. She unwillingly heads home to her widowed sister's ballroom dance studio in Georgia to report on suburban living, where friendships develop and a real relationship with her sister blossoms. If you can't make the signing, just give us a call at 675-0540 to reserve your copy of any of Wendy's books.

Thursday, Mar. 18th, 6:45 pm at Saffron's Indian Restaurant: Business Book Club
Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is HardJoin Fiction Addiction's business book club as we discuss Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard by Chip and Dan Heath (Random House, hardcover, $26.00), over dinner at Saffron's Indian restaurant on Woodruff Rd. In a story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch posits that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

Switch will be 15% off in the store from now until the meeting. The club is open to the public. If you are planning to attend the meeting, please email us so we can let the restaurant know how many to expect.

March's Store Picks
Broken Places
Broken Places by Sandra Parssall (Poisonsed Pen Press, paperback, $14.95)
Veternarian Rachel Goddard finds herself investigating a murder in her rural Virginia home mainly out of self preservation.  Her love interest Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger adds some police procedural elements as their separate investigtations lead back to 1960s activism and secrets worthy of blackmail.  A great new series for fans of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott.
- Recommended by Nancy McFarlane, store employee

Shall I Knit You a Hat? by Kate KliseThe Whistling Season by Ivan Doig (Harcourt, paperback, $14.00)
From the first scene, Doig drew me into this story in such a way that I could smell the food, hear the newspaper turning, feel the tablecloth. Beyond that, I was inspired by the theme of education and how we learn. Every person deserves a teacher like Morris and Rose shows us also just how much we have to learn from each other.
- Recommended by Cyndi Clack, store employee

Hold Up the SkyHold Up the Sky by Patricia Sprinkle (NAL, paperback, $15.00)
Over 20 years in the making, Hold Up the Sky celebrates the strength of Southern women and how that strength is magnified when joined together. This SIBA Okra pick is a wonderful contemporary Southern read.
- Recommended by Jill Hendrix, store owner

If you've ever wondered how the classics would be told in today's language of social networking websites, this is the book for you. Containing short ("Twenty Tweets or Less"), humorous condensations of famous and infamous books from Oedipus to The Great Gatsby to Harry Potter and the graphic novel Watchmen, Twitterature: The World's Greatest Books in Twenty Tweets or Less will enthrall you as no English teacher could.

Course Called IrelandA Course Called Ireland: A Long Walk In Search of a Country, a Pint, and the Next Tee by Tom Coyne (Penguin, paperback, $16.00)
In the tradition of Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, A Course Called Ireland is the story of a walking-averse golfer who treks his way around an entire country, spending 16 weeks playing every seaside hole in Ireland. Along the way, he searches out his family's roots, discovers a country transformed by an economic boom, and finds that the only thing tougher to escape than Irish sand traps are Irish pubs.

LiftLift by Kelly Corrigan (Hyperion, hardcover, $16.99)
Kelly Corrigan, the author of The Middle Place, originally wrote Lift as a letter to her children. It is a tender, intimate, and robust portrait of risk and love; a touchstone for anyone who wants to live more fully. Corrigan weaves together three true and unforgettable stories of adults willing to experience emotional hazards in exchange for the gratifications of raising children.

100 Days 99 Nights100 Days and 99 Nights by Alan Madison (Little Brown, paperback, $5.99)
100 Days and 99 Nights, a 2010-11 nominee for the SC Children's Book Award, looks at the way a family copes with having a parent away on a 100 day, 99 night military tour of duty through the eyes of the very loveable Esmerelda (Esme) Swishback McCarthur. Speaking to readers on a personal level, this story turns a concept that seems so hard to grasp -- war -- into one that feels much more personal.
