Greetings!

I can't believe the fall weather is upon us, and everyone is already back to school. We barely had time to catch our breath from summer camp around the Sarah's Science office and workshop before we were already full speed ahead with our fall programs!

Our next programs in Oakland are Saturday Science: Magic on September 27th, and Saturday Science: Robots on October 11th. We offered these programs for the first time last fall, and both proved to be extremely popular. This year's programs will feature all new projects and activities, including a new set of tricks up the sleeve of our guest magician Gerald!

Upcoming programs in San Ramon include Saturday Science: Robots on October 18th, and Science Night: Stargazing on October 25th. We look forward to meeting new friends as we continue our expansion into the San Ramon Valley.

At our first Bug of the Month Club meeting on September 6th we had a wonderful time exploring the world of milkweed bugs. You'll find some souvenir photos of that event below included with the information about our next Bug of the Month Club meeting on October 4th. For more Bug Club photos check out our scrapbook.

On Saturday, September 13th we enjoyed a fantastic evening learning about our starry skies at Saturday Science: Stargazing. Our special guest astronomer brought his Dobs 7" sidewalk telescope, through which we observed our moon; the planet Jupiter and its four moons; and Albireo, a spectacular double star approximately 380 light-years away from the Earth.

We had such a fantastic summer, as reflected in our Happy Memories column in this newsletter. To get a fuller picture of our THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND 2008 Summer Day Camp experience, check out our summer scrapbook.

I hope you've all had a great beginning to the school year. Education is my passion, and that's why everything we do at Sarah's Science fulfills our mission: to offer children a joyous experience and show them that learning can be fun and easy.

Happy Fall,
Sarah

Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 332 pages
Publisher: Workman Publishing Company (October 1, 1999)
Available from Amazon.com

These two books are great for both kids and adults. If you have one of those wonderful, inquisitive children who ask tough questions like, "What is a black hole, and why does it suck in objects in space?" then these are the books for you. The author, Kathy Wollard, makes the science accessible, clear and interesting. The cartoon illustrations by Debra Solomon are delightful. These books can be used to spark lively discussions over dinner or at bedtime.

By Sylvia A. Johnson

Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 48 pages
Publisher: Lerner Publications (November 1989)
Available from Amazon.com

This book is highly recommended if you are coming to the Bug of the Month Club on October 4th or have a child who loves insects. The photographs in this book (by Isao Kishida) are superb, showing all aspects of the life cycle of the silkworm moth, including shots of the changes occurring inside the cocoon as the adult moth develops. Sylvia Johnson gives an in depth description of the natural history of the silkworm moth and also includes information on the silk industry.

Although this award-winning series of Lerner Natural Science Books is out of print now, they are still available on Amazon.com. The entire series of Lerner Natural Science Books is terrific and well worth purchasing while they're still available. The photography is magnificent, and the writing is compelling.
