Spiders is a terrific book for kids (especially those bugsters who are coming to our next Bug Club meeting featuring arachnids). This book, a Lerner Natural Science Book, is one of a series of award-winning books published by Lerner Publications Company. All of the books in the series are excellent, with incredible photographs and clear, interesting writing. Although the series is out of print, you can still purchase most of them online.

Letters to a Young Teacher

by

Jonathan Kozol

Crown Publishers
2007

Available at Amazon.com

For a clear understanding of what's happening in public education in this country, read Letters To A Young Teacher. Jonathan Kozol, one of America's best educators and social commentators, tells it straight. This is not just a book for teachers. This is a book for parents, students and anyone who cares about educating children. Kozol's correspondence with a beginning teacher reveals what good, inspiring teaching is and why it is so difficult to achieve in these test-ridden, bureaucratic times. I highly recommend this book and all Kozol's other books as well.

Greetings!

The leaves are beginning to change color, and the crisp morning air is gently nudging us into the fall season. I hope you've all had a great start to the school year. The Sarah's Science team has been fully engaged in a creative flurry that has produced an exciting line-up of fall and winter programs.

I'm pleased to announce a 3-dayThanksgiving Camp on Monday, November 19 - Wednesday, November 21, 2007, coinciding with the Oakland Unified School District's Thanksgiving Recess. We'll be exploring the science of toys, a timely theme as our campers and their families head into the holiday season.

As promised in our last Sarah Says, you'll find more details below on our new December 2007 programs - Saturday Science: Magic  on December 1 and Science Night with Sarah: Stargazing  on December 15. We hope these programs will offer children fascinating new perspectives on science while giving parents some quality time on their own.

We've finalized all the details for our Inventor's Workshop Winter Camp, offered in Oakland and Berkeley on December 26, 27, 28 and 31, 2007, and January 2, 3 and 4, 2008. Our exploration of the forces of electricity, magnetism and gravity will feature fantastically fun projects, including an electro-magnetic crane, an amazing acrobatic toy and a mysterious bouncing butterfly.

Our next Bug of the Month Club class on Saturday, October 20, 2007, will focus on arachnids, the amazing 8-legged creatures better known as spiders. Children will learn how and why spiders spin webs and meet a real live arachnologist.

And last but not least, I want to highlight our Special Holiday Offer (see below) of only $250/week forThis Land is Your Land 2008 Summer Day Camp. This is absolutely the lowest rate we'll be offering for the 2008 summer camp season, so please take advantage of the savings and perhaps suggest aThis Land is Your Land 2008 Gift Certificate for the gift givers in your family.

As always I look forward to seeing you this fall.

                                     Sincerely,
                               Sarah Shaffer

P.S. By the way our Sarah Says editor is still recovering from the blah blah blah blah error in our last e-newsletter. His new mantra: proofread!
