Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method
More Than 100 Hands-On Science Experiments For Children
by
Sally Stenhouse Kneidel
Fulcrum Publishing June 1993
I love this book. Kneidel knows lots about insects and other "creepy crawlies". She tells you where to find them, how to keep them, and most important, how to learn more about them. She introduces the scientific method in a natural way that makes sense for children. Kneidel shows how to devise experiments based on the questions that inevitably arise when children observe critters.
This book is a must-have for elementary school teachers and for parents struggling to help their children select a science fair project and perform scientific experiments.

Greetings!
After a short break following our summer camp season, my staff and I are moving full speed ahead to create an exciting assortment of new fall and winter programs that are guaranteed to knock our campers socks off!
We kick off our fall season with a Bug of the Month Club class on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Our first meeting will focus on the wonderful world of crickets. Children will learn how and why crickets chirp, create a cozy habitat for their pet cricket and explore the crickets' life cycle. Future Bug of the Month classes will feature spiders and beetles.
Our Inventor's Workshop Winter Camp will be offered at locations in Oakland and Berkeley on December 26, 27, 28 and 31, 2007, and January 2, 3 and 4, 2008. We will be exploring the forces of electricity, magnetism and gravity while inventing an array of cool contraptions.
I'm thrilled to announce two new programs to be offered in December 2007. Saturday Science, an all day blah blah blah blah, will take place on December 1. On Saturday, December 15, 2007, from 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm, we'll be stargazing as we explore the mysterious world beyond our planet at Science Night with Sarah: Stargazing.
We'll be offering many fun activities and a few surprises in our upcoming programs. I look forward to seeing your family this fall.
Sincerely,
Sarah Shaffer

Don't miss out on our first Bug Club meeting of the school year. This month you'll make friends with your own cuddly pet cricket.
As usual, we'll be learning lots of cool stuff about bugs in general, and crickets in particular. We'll learn how and why crickets chirp, create a cozy habitat for your pet cricket, explore the life cycle of crickets, and design scientific experiments to study cricket behavior.
