On Learning to Read

 The Child's Fascination
with Meaning

by Bruno Bettelheim

and Karen Zelan

Knopf Publishing
December 1981

Available at Amazon.com

As you prepare to get back into the full swing of the school year, I want to encourage you to read a book written over 20 years ago by a renowned child psychologist, Bruno Bettelheim, and his co-author, Karen Zelan. The book, On Learning to Read, The Child's Fascination with Meaning, may be the most important book you could read about education.

According to these authors, children learn to read not just to gain a skill; they read for meaning. When children have trouble learning to read, we often assume that they are not being taught the correct system for reading. Would straight phonics be better? Or would sight reading be a better system? Bettelheim makes the case that the problem may lie more in what we are trying to get them to read. Our children are smart. They want the depth of meaning that's found in good literature, not the meaningless drivel that's found in reading primers.

Every child should love to read.  This insightful book opens the door to understanding the entire reading process.

"No Child Left Indoors!"

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND Summer Day Camp

blends the exciting science and nature studies developed by Sarah Shaffer, with art, music, hiking, swimming, and outdoor games.  Our goal is for every child to have a summer filled with outrageous fun in a beautiful, wild, natural setting.  We say, "No child left indoors!"

Nature and science work together.  The weird and wonderful world of nature provides a great way to "hook" kids on science.  In turn hands-on science and art activities connect children back to the natural world, increasing environmental awareness and instilling a deep caring for our world.

Each week your child will bring home 6 hands-on projects related to the weekly theme.  Our themes this year include "Crazy Contraptions," "Rockin' Robots," "Edible Science," and "Kaboom! Pop, Burst & Bubble."

We offer two lovely outdoor sites: Roberts Regional Park in the Oakland hills and Tilden Park in Berkeley.

Greetings!

We're heading into the final week of our exciting This Land Is Your Land Summer Camp sessions in Oakland and Berkeley. Since our last E-news Update, we've created a balloon powered windmill; explored the science of magic while learning a few tricks to astound our friends; built robots and dressed up for the annual Robot Dance Contest; and made a Carbon Dioxide Rocket Racer!

I hope many of you will be able to attend our last week of camp, August 27 - 31, when we'll be working on some of my Favorite Projects, including an air blast soccer game and a fiber optic flower pot. Remember that we offer a daily rate, so even if your children start school August 29th, we'd love to see you on Monday, August 27th, and Tuesday, August 28th.

I can't believe the summer camp season is almost over. We've had so much fun exploring the wide open spaces at Tilden and Roberts while hiking, swimming, singing, doing arts and crafts and playing lots of fun camp games.

I hope you'll be able to join us as we wind up our fabulous 2007 camp season on August 31.

                                     Happy Summer,
                               Sarah Shaffer

Last Week of August at This Land Is Your Land is not to be missed!

Every year we reserve the last week of the summer to feature some of Sarah's favorite projects and special guests. Among the array of exciting projects we'll be working on are a Cartesian Diver and a homemade hypsometer.

We are also pleased to offer some special guests during the last week of August. Patricia Winters, otherwise known as The Bat Lady, will bring her collection of live bats and help campers appreciate how valuable and gentle these special creatures can be.

The East Bay Vivarium will bring a fascinating collection of reptiles and amphibians.

Our morning music will be enhanced by the rythmic drumming of world renowned musician E.W. Wainwright.

If you can't join us for the whole week, you can attend by the day. See you then!

Rockin' out at Rockin' Robots Week

We had so much fun during Rockin' Robots Week! We created an electro-magnetic robot and built Scaredy-Bot, the vibrating robot.

The best part of the week was making robot accessories and practicing our moves for the Robot Dance Contest.

Even Sarah rocked like a robot all week!

Not to be outdone, some of our campers really showed us how to bust a move.

We also had a special appearance by Rob The Robot, who looked a lot like a counselor named Tuck.
