Cool Links
Many campers still have their carnivorous plants from last year's visit by California Carnivores to This Land Is Your Land. This is a must-see nursery that will amaze and delight you. If you visit, say "hi" to Peter D'Amato from Sarah.

"No Child Left Indoors!"
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND 2007 Summer Day Camp blends the exciting science and nature studies developed by Sarah Shaffer, with art, music, hiking, swimming, and outdoor games. Our goal is for every child to have a summer filled with outrageous fun in a beautiful, wild, natural setting. We say, "No child left indoors!"
Nature and science work together. The weird and wonderful world of nature provides a great way to "hook" kids on science. In turn hands-on science and art activities connect children back to the natural world, increasing environmental awareness and instilling a deep caring for our world.
Each week your child will bring home 6 hands-on projects related to the weekly theme. Our themes this year include "Crazy Contraptions," "Rockin' Robots," "Edible Science," and "Kaboom! Pop, Burst & Bubble."
We offer two lovely outdoor sites: Roberts Regional Park in the Oakland hills and Tilden Park in Berkeley.
Remaining Camp Dates:
July 16 - August 31 Weekly sessions
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Extended care available 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Greetings!
We're winding up Week 4 of our exciting 11-week Summer Camp sessions in Oakland and Berkeley. We've built some fantastic projects, including solar powered jitterbugs, gyrocopters and stunt planes, rock candy crystals, and motorized carousels!
In the coming weeks we'll be meeting live California canine up close during Coyotes and their Canine Kin week; building a balloon powered windmill during Crazy Contraptions week; astounding our friends with magic tricks (shhh...it's really science) during Abracadabra! week; creating a carbon dioxide rocket racer during Kaboom! Pop, Burst & Bubble week; and spinning out with a spool racer during Wild About Wheels week.
We're having so much fun exploring the wide open spaces in the breathtaking settings at Tilden and Roberts Regional Parks. Hiking, swimming, singing, arts and crafts, and outdoor games are all featured during THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND's jam-packed weeks of fun in the sun.
I hope to see all of you before our fabulous 2007 camp season ends on August 31.
Happy Summer,
Sarah Shaffer

Electric Headlight Glasses featured during All Wired Up! Week
Headlight Glasses are the height of fashion at This Land Is Your Land Camp this week!
We had too much fun assembling and flashing our glasses.
What a fantastic way to learn how electricity works!
Did you know that for electrons to move, there must be a complete circuit - no breaks in the pathway?
When a switch like the little black one on my box is turned off, it creates a break in the circuit. When I turn the switch on, it completes the circuit and the electrons flow through the wires, lighting the bulbs in my glasses. Science is cool stuff!

Getting Lost in the Great Indoors
Many Adults Worry Nature Is Disappearing From Children's Lives
By Donna St. George Washington Post Staff Writer
Linda Pelzman appreciates the beauty of the outdoor world, sometimes pulling her children into the yard to gaze at a full moon or peer into a dense fog. An educator and founder of a summer camp, she only wishes her enthusiasm was fully shared. On a recent nature walk near her home in Gaithersburg, her younger son, 6, was unimpressed, pleading, "I just want to go back to civilization." Her older son, at 13, has made it clear he prefers PlayStation.
"Kids don't think about going outside like they used to, and unless there is some scheduled activity, I don't think they know what to do outdoors anymore," Pelzman said.
Pelzman's view is shared by a growing number of children's advocates, environmentalists, business executives and political leaders who fear that this might be the first generation of "indoor children," largely disconnected from nature. Concerns about long-term consequences -- affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness -- have spawned a national movement to "leave no child inside." In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grass-roots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a "green hour" in each day.
