PRESIDENT'S QUARTERLY MESSAGE

Amy Kong

President, 2011

www.amykong.com

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Holiday Season.

Time flies as we close 2011.

CREAA has been reaching out to our membership and communities more than ever in 2011, like our mixer event in Candlestick Cove, our educational program with Mr. Sau Wing Lam and Cantonese-speaking realtors and our Winter Reception and board elections in December. All of them were networking and business opportunities that CREAA provided to its members.

Looking back at the 2011 San Francisco Mayoral Campaign, we are happy to welcome our new mayor - Mr. Ed. Lee! The mayoral campaigns of not only Ed Lee but also David Chiu, Leland Yee, Jeff Adachi and Phil Ting spurred Asian American civic participation. I can see the importance of a motivated electorate that can voice what we want in order to make a difference. I urge you to take action and participate with us at once so as to make a difference in our industry.

At last, I would like to take this opportunity to honor a true giver and leader of CREAA - Mr. John Yen Wong. He has just being honored by Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers (CRB) with their Hall of Leaders Award. The countless future leaders John Wong encouraged, helped support and nurtured are now here to say- Congratulations and Thank You.

OUTREACH TO CANTONESE REALTORS

SAN FRANCISCO_ To increase professionalism and collaboration, CREAA leaders shared their expertise on taxation issues with Bay Area Cantonese-speaking realtor professionals and foreign investors.  The Oct 27 event inside a packed St Mary's Cathedral Conference Center venue featured two prominent Chinese-language financial talk show hosts from radio and TV - financial planner Sau Wing Lam and accountant Cho Chan in conjunction with former CREAA presidents.  Jeff Woo, a sought after speaker and published writer on real estate and landlord-tenant issues, discussed how Cantonese realtors could partner with the SF Association of Realtors, where he will be the 2012 President.  John Yen Wong, a national speaker and writer on real estate issues, discussed increasing interest by foreign investors in the US real estate market.  Also participating were emeritus presidents Fanny Chu, Eva Hom, Lily Dao and Alice Lam, along with 2012 president Albert Tam and 2011 president Amy Kong.

CREAA IN THE COMMUNITY

CREAA, President 2008

HOME OWNERSHIP MATTERS

In the past few years with economic crisis and the high number of foreclosures facing our nation, some have spoken out against the concept of home ownership, making arguments that renting is better than purchasing. Despite years and years of research and a history showing that neighborhoods with high rates of home ownership contribute to better communities, better schools, and benefits for our society, some are making statements that it is not in our citizen's best personal financial interest to own.

The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) decided to combat this movement by conducting a large media campaign, lobbying Congress, and promoting home ownership matters by a bus tour meandering through our nation talking about this message!

On October 31st, the bus made a stop in San Francisco at the newly remodeled San Francisco Association of REALTORS (SFAR) building.  The bus was greeted by SFAR staff, enthusiastic  members, and the media- all working together to spread the American Dream of Home Ownership throughout our country.

Vince Malta, Vice President and Liaison to Government Affairs for NAR, spoke about the importance of home ownership and lobbying in Congress for higher conforming loan limits, leaving mortgage interest deduction intact, and how because there is nobody else lobbying  for the interest of homeowners, that burden fall on REALTORS to work with our local state, and federal governments to make sure that our voices are heard!

Bruce Lyon, President of SFAR, spoke about the importance of home ownership.  A first time home buyer, with help from EARN, testified proudly about how she purchased her first home with unbelief from her friends and relatives.  Jeanne Lu, Senior Loan Manager from the Mayor's Office of Housing, spoke about the City's contribution to home ownership.

The bus has been driven over 13,000 miles on this tour so far and was on its way down to Anaheim as the final stop at the NAR National Conference.  We REALTORS are proud of this effort and should use this as an opportunity to educate the public and our legislators about the importance of home ownership!

CREAA DONATES $1000 TO EARN

CREAA donates $1000 to EARN
Standing behind the big check are CREAA board member Samson Wong, Amanda Byrd of SF EARN, Michelle Balog of EARN's Real Estate Auxiliary, CREAA  mixer organizers Chris Lim, Eugene Pak, Tina Wong and board member Jean Dunn.

SAN FRANCISCO_A $1000 CREAA donation from the October 20 mixer in Candlestick Cove will support EARN, a non-profit micro savings provider dedicated to empowering low-income working families by accumulating wealth and realizing major aims like buying a home and starting a business.

The non-profit serves tens of thousands of Bay Area residents. In the 1st Qtr. of 2011, EARN served 158 who had invested $995,472 (personal savings and matches) for the a first home. 132 out of 158 had purchased a home. Another 102 accounts invested $563,925 for "special projects" including apartment deposits. Bay Area families, of which 23% are Asian Pacific Islander American, have benefited from innovative financial programs like matched saving accounts, checking accounts for the unbanked and financial coaching.

WIENER TALKS ABOUT HOUSING, CITY HALL TONE

SAN FRANCISCO_Scott Wiener, considered "one of the real estate friendly supervisors" according to CREAA President Amy Kong, updated attendees about the tone of City Hall, housing and parks at the October 20 mixer. Wiener, representing neighborhoods including the Castro and Noe Valley, talked about the "really positive" tone at City Hall just weeks before the Nov. 8 mayoral election.  "Everyone's working together," he said, especially with emphasis on creating a "vibrant environment" for housing and economy for jobs and businesses.

In his supervisor district #8, Wiener said there's "quite a bit of development" especially with ten housing projects revived after being stalled for 10 years in the Upper Market that would create rental, ownership and affordable units "along a transit corridor," he said. "It's something I'm very focused on to make sure it happens in the right way."

Enhancing livability in the district, Wiener is also focused on recreation and park projects like Glen Canyon.  "Dolores Park is the biggest project in the district," said the legislator who will mark a year in office in January.

After the Nov. election, Chiu came in fourth after winner and Mayor Ed Lee, followed by Supervisor John Avalos and City Attorney Dennis Herrera.  Trailing Chiu were 13 other candidates.

CHASE OFFERS PROGRAM FOR UNION WORKERS

Chase Oct MixerCREAA mixer audience listens to mayoral candidate David Chiu's remarks.

SAN FRANCISCO_CREAA members had an opportunity to meet one of the CHASE's top executives and representatives from five branches in the city's Sunset and the Excelsior.  Dwayne Webb, Vice President of Business Development, highlighted two CHASE products - the Union Plus and the LMI Subsidy Discount Programs.  Union Plus helps union members and their families.  The biggest question union workers face when purchasing or owning a home is "Am I going to lose my job?" said Webb.  The program helps with closing costs, strike benefits and house payments for up to six months.  CHASE's other program is the Low-to- Moderate-Income (LMI) Subsidy Discount Program which helps with closing costs, interest rate buying down, prepayments and down payments.

GET MATCHED & SAVE KYLE

Kyle- Bone MarrowKyle, 4, needs a marrow donor match to overcome aplastic anemia. His half Chinese and half Caucasian heritage makes his search a challenge.  Marrow donors can just take 10 minutes to register and be life-saving matches to help Kyle and 10,000 other patients, some of whom especially face a critical shortage of minorities on the life-saving national registry.

FAQs for Kyle's Campaign:

1. Can the donor be half Caucasian and half of ANY Asian decent? Yes! However since Kyle is half Chinese and half Caucasian, he is more likely to find a genetic match if the donor is also half Chinese and half Caucasian.

2.  I would like to test if I am a match.  Where do I go?

Saturday, January 7                                         Saturday, January 14

Serendipity School                                       Haight Ashbury Free Clinic

San Mateo, CA                                               San Francisco, CA

3.  I don't live nearby.  How can I take the test? Visit www.aadp.org/homekit and request an in home kit. Once you receive it in the mail, fill out included form, take simple test and mail it back.

4.  Do I have to pay anything to register? No!  you will not be charged.  However, since tests cost $100 per person to complete and enter one donor on the "Be the Match" registry, the Asian American Donor Program relies on donations to make it free for the applicant.  You can donate to help with these tests by contacting AADP.

5.  How old do I have to be to take the test?  Participants must be in good health, between ages of 18 and 60 and fill out a consent form.

6.  I had banked my baby's cord blood.  Can I donate this?  That depends.  If you banked it for public use, it is already being searched in our database.  If you banked it for private use, probably not.  To learn more, please contact Carol from AADP.org or call her at (415) 515-5334.

7.  Is the test painful? No!  It is a simple swab of the cheek for your saliva.  No pain. No needles.

8. For more info:  Please call Carol of the Asian American Donor Program at (415) 515-5334 or visit www.aadp.org/kyle.

Claim Your Membership Card & Benefits!

by Joan Hume, Internal Vice-President and Membership Chair

Over thirty years ago, immigrants living in and around Chinatown were beginning to migrate to the "avenues" of the Richmond and Sunset Districts for less crowded housing conditions and better schools. Chinatown's few real estate agents helped home buyers negotiate the home purchasing process.

However, because of language barriers, sometimes they faced discrimination by some sellers and agents. A few of Chinatown's licensed agents brainstormed on how to overcome this obstacle and came up with the idea of a real estate association networking with other Chinese American agents to help each other on their listings.

This was the beginning of the Chinese Real Estate Association of America.

Since then, the organization has successfully promoted homeownership to the City's many new residents. Beyond Chinatown, CREAA has evolved to embrace multiethnic members and help homeowners on many City issues. CREAA meets San Francisco officials on issues and concerns affecting homeowners.

The City has taken heed of homeowners concerns too. From our organization, two past presidents, John Yen Wong and John M. Lee, were elected Presidents of SF Association of Realtors. Jeffery Woo is President-elect for 2012 SFAR.

Clearly CREAA is an organization to be reckoned with.
