Dear Colleague
I hope you all had a great holiday weekend. I definitely
tried to pack too much in - a nephew's wedding, a
visit from my son, plus a trip through the gorgeous
Shenandoah Valley left little time for me to take
advantage of my latest find for our readers. Thanks to
this resource, I hope to spend less time
saying "Scusi" should I manage to get to Italy again.
And, speaking of thanks, I'd like to thank all our
readers not only for their input to our various
questions, but also for their support. Without you, we'd
be nowhere. So, as the Italians might say, "grazie
mille" (Thanks a million).

Telecom Fraud: A Reminder |
|
Mark Evans sent along the following clip. It brings
home the necessity for continued telecom fraud
monitoring. He notes the old school phone hacking is
still going on. Here's the story in a nutshell.
A recently installed voicemail system at the US
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was
recently breached to the tune of $12,000 worth of
phone calls to numbers in the Middle East and Asia.
Attacks of this sort have been around for years, and
trained administrators know how to put security
measures in place. FEMA issued a warning about
this type of attack five years ago. While this is definitely
not a high-tech breach, it illustrates the necessity of
not only defending against the latest threats but the
old stuff too.
Mark Evans is a principal of BottaBoom Consulting,
L.L.C. He is full of interesting stories. In fact he served
as the expert from the telecom fraud chapter in my
new book, Fraud in Accounts Payable: How to Prevent
It. As I think I mentioned in an earlier edition, my
publisher beat the publication date and the $49 book
is now available for sale.

AP Appreciation Week |
|
If you haven't entered our AP Appreciation Week
contest, please see last week's e-zine or e-mail
publisher@ap-now.com for the details. This is one of
our "everyone's a winner" contests - although a few
are bigger winners than others.
We will run our annual low-cost Webinar in November
and are working out the final details so watch future
issues for the details.
As we mentioned last week, we are planning a
special product package to celebrate Accounts
Payable Appreciation Week (October 20-24). We've
got just under $250 worth of products for $99. The
sale will end with the end of AP Appreciation Week.
And, we've got a special bonus for the paid
subscribers to our print newsletter, Accounts
Payable Now & Tomorrow. They can
substitute the Travel & Entertainment Best
Practices book ($65 John Wiley & Sons) for any
item in the set potentially bringing it to over $300.
Details are at the link below.

Demise of the Paper Invoice Report |
|
Well, you've probably guessed from the title what the
future holds for the paper invoice. As you may
remember a reader wrote to inquire if vendors could
refuse to supply paper invoices and the question
triggered quite a discussion. While we never did find
an answer to the legality of the issue, it quickly
became apparent that the invoice landscape was
rapidly and radically changing.
We've combined the information we found with a few
other best practice articles related to invoices into a
new white paper called "The Demise of the Paper
Invoice." We have already sent copies to all who
participated. Additionally, we will e-mail copies of the
paper this week to all paid subscribers of Accounts
Payable Now & Tomorrow as our way of
thanking them for their support.
We have also made the white paper available for sale
for others interested in the issue. It is only $29.95 -
and in keeping with the theme, is only available via e-
mail. So, if you order it, please make sure to include
your e-mail address. The link below will take you to
the order form for the invoice white paper. If you wish
to pay by credit card, simply click on the link in the form.

AP Career Center |
|
As promised, we return this week for job listings. But
first, we have some neat online learning resources,
including the "find" I mentioned in the opening
paragraph.
Career Tip: It's often recommended that
accounts payable professionals learn a foreign
language if they want to broaden their skillset and
become more attractive to international clients.
Whenever I see that advice, I think, "that's just great -
how can anyone working full time accomplish that
goal?" Well, now thanks to the BBC, you can either
brush up on that language you took in high school
and/or college or learn a new one. Use the link below
to hook up to the BBC's online language
courses.
And speaking of online learning, you may recall last
week I indicated that I believed it would be impossible
to find online resources for advanced Excel - well
apparently, one more time (sigh) I was wrong. A
reader (thanks Mary ellen) wrote to share information
about an article that contained ten links. The article
(with the links) can be viewed in its entirety at http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/119

UP Seminar: Get Your Hotel Room |
|
If you are coming to one of our Unclaimed Property
seminars and need a hotel room for an overnight stay,
don't forget to make your reservation ASAP. The
timeframe for the room blocks are running out. To
make reservations for the Los Angeles event to
www.b
everlyhillsresidenceinn.com and in the
CORPORATE CODE box put APNAPNA or you can call
866-440-5370 and ask for the Accounts Payable Now
Rate.
For the Cincinnati event, call 1-800-266-6605.
Of course, if you don't need a room for an overnight
stay, there is still plenty of time to make your
reservation.
And speaking of unclaimed property, I was chuckling
over a long article in our local paper on the topic, when
I got a note from Will Yancey alerting me to the piece. It
is titled, "What's yours is theirs" and the subtitle
says, "Delaware is especially good at seizing -- and
keeping -- unclaimed assets." Unfortunately, it's true.

In Closing, |
|
No room again for our Top Clicks or tidbits on our
outstanding Fall Webinar series. I
hope you'll check
out our upcoming Duplic
ate Payment Obliteration Webinar series, as well
as our B-Notices and other 1099-
related events.
I'd also like to share that we are going gangbusters
ahead with our duplicate payment obliteration
resource centers. We are really excited about the
number of vendors who have signed on to sponsor
the center so we are going to be able to bring you a
number of articles, tips, and best of all diagnostic
tools - all free of charge. We'll have more about that
venture, scheduled to debut on October 1, in the
coming weeks.
Until next week, ringraziamenti per ascoltare - which
apparently means, thanks for listening in Italian. (I
cheated and used translation software).
