With the close of 2009 rapidly approaching
and a new decade virtually looking over our
shoulders it can be helpful reviewing
something that happened this past year and
looking to this upcoming year. Just this
past year we had the first SOT research
conference that was patterned after the major
chiropractic research conferences with 28
quality abstracts of articles in the book
from this year's proceedings. We had the
opportunity to share SOT research at the 2009
RAC/ACC and WFC/ICCR conferences as well as
develop greater awareness of dental and
chiropractic co-treatment opportunities.
In this upcoming year we once again have
papers accepted for the 2010 RAC/ACC
conference, representing the 10th year in a
row that SOTO-USA has had a paper accepted at
this prestigious conference. With the fine
papers from the past SOT Research Conference
we will have a group of papers ready to
submit to various other research conferences
as well as excellent starting points for peer
review journal submissions.
Look towards the unveiling of our new updated
website
before the end of 2009, SOT information will
be easier to navigate and
access.
The Alaskan
Cruise - SOT
Cranial Clinical Gems - is now taking place July
16-23rd, 2010, click here for more information.
In this research update we will also share an
update from SOTO-USA's president Rob Monk,
DC, information on a new book by Harvey
Getzoff, DC entitled, "Learn SOT from
Clinical Case Studies," some recent
osteopathic cranial research studies.
Now
with the SOT Research Conference call for
paper's deadline July 31, 2010 it is a
perfect time to
contemplate a paper for this October 28, 2010
conference in New Orleans. I am here to help
you so please contact me if you have any
interest in writing or co-writing an abstract
for this conference. drcblum@aol.com

President's Address.
Robert Monk, DC
2009 was another great year for SOTO-USA.
Through our association with NYCC, SCUHS, and
Palmer Davenport, we've begun a new SOT
certification teaching series on BOTH coasts
as well as in the middle of the country and
expanded our Clinical Symposium to include
the first annual SOT Research Conference. The
Research conference, especially, gives many
doctors who may not already be teaching the
opportunity to give a presentation, feel of
value, and contribute to building an SOT
evidence base.
Plans are also underway for a Hands on
Technique (HOT) Conference on board an
Alaskan Cruise leaving from Seattle, WA July
16,2010.
2009 also marks the launching of our new
book, the "Guide to Intra-Oral Adjusting," a
landmark text based on Dr. DeJarnette's
Category One Intra-Oral corrections. This
book expands the understanding of...click

TMJ Bioengineering Conference
Boulder, Colorado, November 4-7, 2009
Letter to Conference Chairs:
I
really had no idea of the depth of study
regarding disc and condyle replacements for
the TMJ. This TMJ Bioengineering Conference
was an illustrious group of researchers
searching for answers and posing many
questions.
It became clear that much of research is
determined by the questions asked, since that
tends to drive where researchers look and
what they will tend to find. As a
chiropractor I was interested to note that
there was little concern of whole body
posture and its affect on the kinematic chain
of influence upon the TMJ. Click

Conference Abstract:
Blum CL. Sleep Apnea, Forward Head Posture
(FHP), and its Relationship to
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
(TMD).TMJ Bioengineering Conference
Proceedings, Boulder, CO. November 4-7,
2009: 47.
Forward head posture (FHP)
is a pandemic condition affecting a large
aspect of the population. One particular
cause of FHP has been found to be associated
with temporomandibular joint dysfunction
(TMD) and its related myofascial dynamics
affecting oral cavity airway
space.
Patterns of influence to the
TMD/FHP can be ascending from the feet, lower
extremities, pelvis, spine or neck or
descending from the stomatognathic or
craniofacial systems, or even related in
either direction by way of visual or
vestibular righting mechanisms. When airway
space is compromised ... Click

Chiropractic, Dentistry and Treatment of TMD.
Blum CL. Dynamic Chiropractic - October 21, 2009; 27(22).
There are two factions within the dental
field that appear to have differing opinions
regarding the etiology, diagnosis and
treatment of temporomandibular disorders
(TMD). One faction believes TMD is primarily
a biopsychosocial issue that will respond to
medication, psychological stress
intervention, and lifestyle modifications.
The other faction, represented by the
American Alliance of TMD Organizations
(AATMD), of which the Sacro Occipital
Technique Organization (SOTO) -USA has been a
member since 2005, believes that dental
occlusion, condylar position, and airway
space play and important part in the etiology
of TMD and therefore need to be addressed in
a dentist's diagnosis and treatment. Click
