SOTO-USA and SORSI join forces to teach SOT in Panama


 

This February 22-24, 2007 in Panama City, Panama James Cima, DC representing SORSI and Charles Blum, DC representing SOTO-USA joined together to teach SOT to our international community. This represented the 2nd International Conference organized by the American Chiropractic Magazine, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Busch family, particularly the magazine’s president Jaclyn Busch Touzard.

Dr. Cima shared category two methods of analysis and treatment along with extensive discussion of SOT’s method of evaluating and treating viscerosomatic and somatovisceral dysfunction incorporating the work of Drs. DeJarnette and Rees. Dr Blum presented information on diagnosis and treatment of herniated discs and Spondylolisthesis. His work involved a combination of some novel ways of using R+C factors and orthopedic block usage incorporating the work of Drs. DeJarnette and Vincent and Carmine Esposito.

CMRT Makes the Grade in Massachusetts
 SOTO-USA at Work

In early 2006 SOTO-USA was notified that any seminar teaching chiropractic manipulative reflex technique (CMRT) would be considered an investigative seminar by the state of Massachusetts and could not be taken for relicensing credit.

Starting from that time intensive activity from SOTO-USA began seeking to overturn this position by their board. Over 100 hours of time was spent on emails, phone calls and preparing of documents needed for response.

We prepared a CMRT Position Statement (recently posted on the SOTO-USA website in the SOT Literature section) along with multiple emails and phone calls to the Massachusetts board's representative. Assistance was received by Drs. Jerry Hochman and Mary Unger- Boyd.

In mid February 2007 after a persistent follow-up we received the following email, "At the last Board meeting, the Board voted to change your [CMRT] course classification from investigative to a regular CE course."

Non-Synaptic Messaging: Piezoelecticity, Bioelectric Fields, Neuromelanin and Dentocranial Implications
 Blum CL, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, Jan 2007: 1-6.

Introduction: Most nervous system communication occurs at synaptic junctions, however a relatively new branch of neurophysiology has recently been investigating a nontraditional form of neural communication called nonsynaptic messaging. There are various forms of nonsynaptic messaging and discussed in some detail is its relationship to glial cell and CSF activity, the relationship between a piezoelectric or mechanoelectric effect, and low level electromagnetic fields and neuromelanin.

Discussion: Implications of mechanoelectric activity in bone and dentition and a possible neurological affect might involve the dental and chiropractic fields as it relates to their cotreatment of dental, cranial and vertebral dysfunction secondary to temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD).

Conclusion: Somatovisceral relationships, diffuse neurological syndromes, and reflex points on the body unrelated to direct neurological synaptic connections might have some explanation based on the theories presented. Further study into the phenomena of nonsynaptic messaging and its possible relationship to clinical presentations is warranted.

New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) 2nd Annual Symposium on Chiropractic Technique
 

NYCC, leading the way integrating chiropractic techniques, chiropractic research and interdisciplinary cooperation, has taken the step of creating a conference entitled the 2nd Annual Symposium. “The Art of Chiropractic: A Symposium on Chiropractic Technique”this April 21-22, 2007. SOT will be represented by Charles Blum, DC which has been chosen as one of the few chiropractic techniques invited to share at this conference.

One reason SOT has been welcomed at this conference is that SOTO-USA has been taking monumental strides in the field of chiropractic interdisciplinary co-treatment. This exhibits the value of presenting research at our chiropractic research conferences and in peer reviewed journals. The multidisciplinary focus of SOTO-USA welcoming relationships between the field of chiropractic and other fields such as dentistry, allopathy, and podiatry is being echoed by those looking to the future of the field of chiropractic.

The conference will be held in New York City at the La Guardia Marriott and is presented by New York College of Chiropractic.

SOT Gains Recognition in Chiropractic’s Peer Reviewed Journals
 

Matthew McCoy, DC editor of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR) has invited Charles Blum, DC to assist peer review with the journal and function as an associate editor of JVSR. Dr. Blum’s goal of joining JVSR is to open the door for SOT submissions and aiding SOT doctors interested in taking the step to get published in the peer reviewed literature. Only quality SOT papers will be published in JVSR, so please take a step and submit a paper to the journal.

This fall Dr. Blum was also invited by Claire Johnson, DC to the peer review board of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine. The key to helping SOT gain awareness in the chiropractic research community is to have SOT doctors involved with attending research conferences, sharing SOT research at chiropractic conferences. The future for chiropractic and SOT will be secured only if our doctors take the step and make a commitment to research.

 


 SOT Submits Papers to the World Congress of Chiropractic Research Conference in Portugal
 

In spirit of international SOT cooperation Steve Williams, DC and Simon Billings, DC, representing SOTO Europe and Charles Blum, DC representing SOTO-USA submitted a paper relating to cranial treatment of deformational plagiocephaly. Dr. Williams the lead author used his expertise in SOT pediatrics to share his novel methods of care for the treatment of plagiocephaly.

A second paper not only included Drs. Blum and Williams but also Scott Cuthbert, DC, representing the International College of Applied Kinesiology research department. This paper discussed chiropractic treatment of delayed developmental disorders incorporating cranial techniques similar to both SOT and AK. These international SOT cooperative efforts along with joining forces with other sister chiropractic technique organizations is expected to be the way of the future

SOTO-USA Has Paper Accepted to the RAC/ACC Research Conference
 The Effects of the Sacro- Occipital Technique on the Quality of Life in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiation Treatment

The RAC/ ACC research conference is the most prestigious and well attended research conference in chiropractic, attended by chiropractic college presidents, top researchers in chiropractic and from all chiropractic colleges internationally. It is essential for SOT to have a presence at these conference.

This March 15-17, 2007, thanks to Marilyn Holbeck, DC, SOTO-USA will have a paper accepted to this year's RAC/ACC conference. SOTO-USA has worked diligently to have a paper presented each year at all the RAC/ACC conferences since 2000.

The theme of many future SOTO-USA papers will be on developing co-treatment opportunities with allied healthcare practitioners such as with dentists and allopathic physicians. Dr. Holbeck's poster presentation at this conference will be another step in exhibiting the possible far reaching aspects of SOT care to the whole chiropractic profession.

 SOTO-USA: Leading the Way for Dental Co-treatment
 

Richard Gerardo, DC, representing SOTO-USA attended this year's board meeting of the American Alliance of TMD Organizations in Chicago this February 23, 2007. At this meeting future plans are being made to expand greater research into the treatment of TMD conditions. The current focus is to look beyond the jaw when studying TMD and look towards its affect on general health as well as associated co-morbidities.

Jeffrey Mersky, DC, represented SOTO-USA at the ,a href="http://www.tmjtherapycentre.com/"> Interdisciplinary Treatment for Orofacial Pain/TMD and Sleep Apnea in San Diego California February 22-24, 2007. Dr. Mersky works with Dr. Steven Olmos - a world renown expert in the field of dental TMD treatment - and at this conference Dr. Mersky teamed up with experts from healthcare to share the latest techniques in diagnosis and treatment of TMD. He illustrated the unique role a SOT doctor fills when Orthodontia, restorative dental procedures and or permanent dental appliances, are considered to stabilize structural and proprioceptive dysfunction in the TMJ patient.

SOT TMJ Conference presented by SOTO-USA and TUFTS University School of Dentistry will take place June 8-10, 2007 in Boston Massachusetts. This chiropractic and dental conference will focus on co- treatment working models and hands on techniques for treatment of TMD syndromes. Instructors will be Marty Rosen, DC, Noshir Mehta, DMD, and others to be announced. Set aside this date and start to make travel plans now.
