Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, July 28-29, 2012

News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

August 31, 2012

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Has it really been a month already since the 12th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival? It's true what they say -- time really does fly!

We hope you had a great time at the festival this year. We certainly did! The festival this year drew 110,000 people over two days who cheered on 52 Dragon Boat Race teams, applauded for nearly 100 performances on five different stages, and shopped and dined at nearly 70 Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendors.

We'd love to hear your favorite experiences at the festival (and your suggestions for making the 13th even better!). Just send your feedback to feedback@cdbf.org.

Elsewhere in this newsletter, we want to congratulate all the winners from CDBF 2012: The Race Teams, the Dragon 5K runner, the scooter winner from our raffle, and the champs in this year's Culinary Contest.

And as always, we have local Asian Community Events listed at the bottom, and updated on our website. We're also adding videos and will be posting a slideshow of photos online, so check back!

I also want to take a moment here and thank all of our sponsors who make the festival possible (they're listed to the right and on this page on our site), as well as our vendors, performers, racers, volunteers and of course, YOU, for attending the festival!

Believe it or not, we're already making plans for CDBF 2013!

See you next year,

Erin Yoshimura

Executive Director

What was your favorite part of CDBF 2012?
CDBF 2012 Double Dragon Dance
Did you attend the 12th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival?

We'd love to know your favorite part of the festival. Was it the exciting Dragon Boat Races? The Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendors? The variety of performances on our multiple stages? The Opening Ceremony, featuring not one, but TWO colorful 75-feet-long dragons?

The shade tents and misters we provided this year to beat the heat? We'd love your feedback about CDBF, so we can make the 13th annual festival even better! Send your comments and favorite moments to feedback@cdbf.org.

The dragon boat race trophy goes to...
CDBF 2012 Dragon Boat RacesIf your favorite part of CDBF is the thrill of dragon boat racing, you'll want to know who won in which divisions.

This year we had 52 teams including youth teams vying for the top title, and the overall championship trophy went to the Steel Dragons team from Dubuque, Iowa!

Denver's Laotian community Youth Team came in second in Division B, and took home that trophy as well as a special trophy from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival to honor the six gold medals and one bronze the team won previously. Those trophies were lost in a fire that engulfed the Laotian Buddhist Temple last December.

Meet the winner of the 1st Dragon 5K!

CDBF Dragon 5K winnerWe have races on the water, so we figured, "why not a race on land?" Thus, the Dragon 5K Run/Walk was created.

Our inaugural Dragon 5K was held on Sunday morning before the festival, and had about 50 participants from kids to older folks. Thanks to all that came out!

The winner of the first Dragon 5K was Lucas Crespin of Littleton, and his wife Courtney took top honors among  women. Lucas was just getting warmed up -- he promptly took  a victory lap around Sloan's lake! Read more here.

Congrats to the winner of the scooter in our Raffle!
CDBF 2012 Raffle winnerThe Colorado Dragon Boat Festival gave away a beautiful 50cc Kymco Like scooter to Ciera Oxner, the lucky winner of our 2012 Raffle.

Ciera picked up her scooter from Sportique Scooters, who provided the prize.

Try your luck next year and buy a raffle ticket -- you might win a scooter like Ciera, and support CDBF at the same time! Read more.
Who had the tastiest fare in our Culinary Contest?
CDBF 2012 Orange CrunchThe CDBF Culinary Contest is the best-tasting competition around!

This year, our celebrity chefs agreed that Orange Crunch deserved top honors for both Best of Show and Best Entree for its crunchy Filipino Empanadas, and that Dae Gee Korean was the tops for its dragon themed entry and Aloha Shave Ice for dessert.

Where: Denver Film Center, 2510 East Colfax, Denver, CO 80206 (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex)
Cost: Per showing - $9.75 non-member, $7.25 Senior/Student, $7.00 DFS member

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind - "The debut film from Hayao Miyazaki, NAUSICAA is considered by many to be his masterwork - and there are few films, animated or otherwise, of such sweeping scope and grandeur. Set in a devastated future world decimated by atmospheric poisons and swarming with gigantic insects, NAUSICAA is the story of a young princess, both brave and innocent, whose love for all living things and passionate determination to understand the processes of nature lead her into terrible danger, sacrifice, and eventual triumph." Director: Hayao Miyazaki; 1984, 116 min. running time
Pom Poko - "In this brilliant and often overlooked Studio Ghibli masterpiece, the forests are filled with groups of magical tanuki, mischievous raccoon-like animals from Japanese folklore that are capable of shape-shifting from their standard raccoon form to practically any object." Director: Hayao Miyazaki; 1994, 119 min. running time

Film Festival: Masters of Studio Ghibli
When: September 7 - 13
Where: Denver Film Center, 2510 East Colfax, Denver, CO 80206 (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex)
Cost: Per showing - $9.75 non-member, $7.25 Senior/Student, $7.00 DFS member
For more information, visit http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=24978 or contact 303.595.3456.

Princess Mononoke - "While defending his village from a demonic boar-god, the young warrior Ashitaka becomes afflicted with a curse that grants him super-human power in battle but will eventually take his life. Traveling west to find a cure or meet his destiny, he journeys deep into sacred depths of the Great Forest where he meets San (Princess Mononoke), a girl raised by wolf-gods who is waging battle against the human outpost of Iron Town, on the edge of the forest. The girl Mononoke a force of nature - with blood smeared lips, riding bareback on a great white wolf, doing battle with both gods and humans, she is as iconic a figure as any from film, literature, or opera.
Please note: The film includes violent battle scenes and frightening fantasy creatures that may be too intense for younger viewers." Director: Hayao Miyazaki; 1997, 134 min. running time
The Ocean Waves - "Rarely seen outside of Japan, OCEAN WAVES is a subtle, poignant and wonderfully detailed story of adolescence and teenage isolation. Taku and his best friend Yutaka are headed back to school for what looks like another uneventful year. But they soon find their friendship tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships." Director: Tomomi Mochizuki; 1995, 72 min. running time
