Welcome!
|
Dear CDBF Community- With just four weeks before the 2012 festival, the pieces are falling into place nicely and we'll unveil the weekend of family fun in the next couple of newsletters! Be sure to check our website and Facebook page for up-to-date information (and "LIKE" us while you're at it!). For the first time in five years, the judges for the Design Contest have chosen two winners - graphic designer Melanie Yamamoto and Denver artist Tony Ortega (who has a few awards to his credit). We're thrilled to have an awesome promotional design by Melanie and as well as Tony's pastel available to purchase as a commemorative poster. Be sure to stop by the CDBF Merchandise booth during the festival!
We're happy to announce that once again, festival guests can park at Sports Authority at Mile High stadium for just $5 per car and ride shuttle buses to and from Sloan's Lake Park. It's the easy, hassle-free way to attend the festival, plus it's green!
In the last newsletter, we announced the main stage and band stage performers. We also now have the lineup set for the always popular Cultural Unity hip-hop showcase stage. Be sure to check it out!
And, back by popular demand this year is the traditional Japanese Obon folk-dance on Saturday, July 28th at 6pm led by the Denver Buddhist Temple Minyo Kai dancers. You're all invited to join them in this public dance -- just watch what they do and match every movement -- it's like line dancing, but in a circle! The Obon dance is early enough for you to head back to Sloan's Lake Park on Sunday morning, July 29 at 8am for the inaugural Dragon 5k Run/Walk. Hurry register for the Run/Walk -- today is the deadline for Early Bird pricing! We're still in need of more volunteers -- we'd love to see more groups of 15 or more people who want to volunteer together as a team, and get extra recognition for your group. Sign up today! Lastly, check out the zany festival commercial produced by our broadcast sponsors Fox31/Channel 2. It'll also air on Comcast xfinity starting July 9th. Erin Yoshimura Executive Director www.cdbf.org FYI: there are only 28 days until the festival!

TWO winners for our 2012 Poster Design contest!
|
The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is thrilled to announce our 5th Annual Community Design Competition winners. The judges received many inspiring works from excellent artists and we thank all the participants for your support.
This year the judges were stumped, because there were two equally deserving works to choose between - so the judges chose both!
Veteran local artist Tony Ortega's pastel, "Team Work," of a dragon boat on Sloan's Lake (above) will be the 2012 Commemorative Poster, while graphic designer Melanie Yamamoto's striking yellow dragon against a red background (left) will be on promotional posters you'll see around town and at the festival.
Click below to read more about our winning designs and their artists, and to click to see full-size images of their art. You'll also see our runner-up and "Young at Art" entry winners.

| Park at Mile High Stadium, take the FREE shuttle | The easy, hassle-free way get to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is to park at Sports Authority Field at Mile High and take a shuttle bus to and from Sloan's Lake Park. Parking costs $5 per car - so carpool for the best deal! - and the shuttle buses are FREE and run every few minutes.
We want to be good neighbors to the Sloan's Lake area residents and businesses, and offer our guests a better experience than parking many bocks away and hiking to the festival. |

Cultural Unity lineup
|
Since its introduction in 2007, the Cultural Unity hip-hop showcase has become one of the most popular features of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.
It's an acknowledgement of young Asian Americans' interest in hip-hop dance, music and poetry, at the same time it's also a reflection of the diversity and inclusiveness of hip-hop culture in general!
Stop by and get down with the funky sounds and get ready for a rocking weekend of Cultural Unity!
This year, Cultural Unity is proud to add a new perspective, Parkour - the acrobatic athletic movement of running, jumping and climbing around obstacles. Apex Movement, shown here, was the first Parkour training program in the Western Hemisphere when it began teaching its moves in 2006.
Check out Apex Movement and the other groups and artists slated for the Cultural Unity Stage at CDBF 2012!

Back by popular demand: Japanese Obon Dance!
| |

In 2011 we introduced a new performance and invited the public to join in the fun: A Japanese Obon Dance.
The Denver Buddhist Temple Minyo Kai dancers are returning for CDBF 2012 to lead the Obon, or Bon Odori, dances, so plan on joining us in front of the Main Performing Arts Stage at 6 pm Saturday July 28!
Think of it as Japanese line dancing, only in a circle instead of lined up side-to-side. Best of all, you don't need to know any dance moves in advance, and you don't need to wear any fancy kimonos or traditional outfits. You can, but it's not required.
Read more about Obon and see a video that explains the dances here!

We want this to be a fun, family event, and commemorate the Year of the Dragon - so participants are welcome to wear dragon-themed costumes, masks and hats (we'll supply the t-shirts).

Our volunteer manager wants your help
|
The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival depends each year on about 300 volunteers -- won't you join us?
We've posted a new video from Volunteer co-manager James Dimagiba on the benefits of volunteering to help put on a weekend-long party for over 100,000 people.
You can make a difference everywhere, from assisting at the performing arts stages to serving as Festival Ambassadors and answering visitors' questions; from supporting our food and gift vendors in the Marketplace and Taste of Asia food court to working with kids in Dragonland, our popular children's area, or keeping the Dragon Boat Races on time.
Register online now to be a 2012 Volunteer, or sign up 15 or more of your friends and volunteer as a group!

Watch the KDVR/KWGN commercial for CDBF 2012
|
KDVR and KWGN, our broadcast sponsors, have produced a funny commercial for CDBF 2012 starring anchor Deborah Takahara and reporter Chris Jose of KDVR-Fox31 and reporter Jacki Jing of KWGN-CW2.
It's a sequel to last year's commercial, which featured Chris paddling while Deborah relaxed. This time the tables have turned and Deborah and Jacki are paddling while Chris relaxes in a dragon boat.
