Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, July 28-29, 2012

News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

APRIL 27, 2012

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Spring has officially spring, which means the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is a mere three months away. I hope you're as excited as I am!

The Operations Committee has been meeting and looking over applications from vendors and performers; we're still accepting applications for volunteers and for Non-Profit Partners (see below). We'll announce our various stage lineups and Marketplace and Taste of Asian vendors soon, so stay tuned.

Because we've been committed to showcasing both traditional Asian culture as well as Asian American artists, we've always featured some bands on our Main Performing Arts Stage -- all styles from rock and folk to alternative rock, blues and R&B. We've gotten more and more bands applying over the years so this year, we're introducing an exciting new Band Stage just for groups. Some of them might also perform on the Main Stage, but you'll be able to swing by the new Band Stage all weekend and catch a variety of groups in a variety of styles!

To accommodate new features like the Band Stage, the festival site at Sloan's Lake Park this year will have a new layout. As part of the redesign, we're creating TWO Taste of Asia food court areas, so that you can satisfy your craving for great Asian cuisine with more choices, less of a wait and fewer lines. I'm getting hungry just thinking about Taste of Asia...

And, as a fourth-generation Japanese American or Yonsei, I wanted to make sure everyone knows about the opening weekend of History Colorado Center, the all-new incarnation of the Colorado History Museum, at 12th and Lincoln. One of the permanent exhibits in the museum is all about Camp Amache, the Japanese American internment camp in southeast Colorado. You can read more about it below, but you should visit the museum to experience the exhibit. Maybe you'll see me there!

Until next month,

Erin Yoshimura

Executive Director

FYI: there are only 91 days until the festival!

We've Got Bands on the Run!
Doug Yoshimura and the Cheapsuit Blues Band Over the years we've presented some great bands on the CDBF Main Performing Arts Stage. We've had award-winning singer-songwriter Wendy Woo with a full band, as well as in a duo and playing solo. We've had Filipino rock bands Tribung Pinoy and Begotten Band. We've featured Dwight Mark, who wrote our theme song, "Dragon Boat," after performing the first time at CDBF.

And last year in addition to Dwight, we featured the soulful Jack Hadley Band, the young alternative band One Sun One Moon, rockers Pearls for Breakfast, and Doug Yoshimura and the Cheapsuit Blues Band (shown here), which played a couple of encores for the appreciative crowd.

This year, we'll have bands again on the Main Stage, but we're announcing for the first time, a Band Stage that'll be rocking all weekend. It's a great reflection of how Asian Americans aren't just into traditional culture with kimonos and ribbon dances. We play American-style pop, R&B, folk, blues and of course, rock and roll! We'll have details on our Performing Arts page soon.
Two Taste of Asia Food Courts = More Great Grub!

Queen of Vietnamese Martyrs Church CDBF 2011 Another new development for 2012: We're going to have TWO Taste of Asia food courts, to make it easier for visitors to get the great Asian cuisine that's featured every year at CDBF.

We'll have more choices for dining, with fewer lines, and a more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy your food.

We'll announce the 2012 list of vendors on our website when they've been chosen, so you can start planning your culinary day when you're at the festival!

Still Looking for a Few Hundred Good Volunteers
Volunteers at CDBF 2011 Join the CDBF family -- we're still accepting applications for volunteers to help out on festival weekend.

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival depends each year on about 300 volunteers to help throw the biggest pan-Asian party in the region.

You can make a difference everywhere, from assisting at the performing arts stages to serving as Festival Ambassadors and answering visitors' questions; from supporting our food and gift vendors in the Marketplace and Taste of Asia food court to working with kids in Dragonland, our popular children's area, or keeping the Dragon Boat Races on time.

Register online now to be a 2012 Volunteer, or sign up 15 or more of your friends and volunteer as a group!

April 30 Deadline to be a Non-Profit Partner!

2012 Non Profit Partners We're also still accepting applications from organizations who want to be a CDBF Non-Profit Partner.

The program allows non-profit groups to sell CDBF concessions
including Pepsi products, Sno-cones and other CDBF merchandise, and the organization gets to keep a portion of the proceeds!

It's a great way to raise money for your non-profit organization and at the same time have a great fun weekend in the sun and enjoy the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival!

Hurry -- the deadline to apply is coming up April 30, so click here for more information!

Visit the Camp Amache exhibit at History Colorado Center
History Colorado Center
The History Colorado Center opens this weekend with a lot of special activities and extra performances, but one exhibit that will be permanent is about Camp Amache, the Japanese American internment camp in southeast Colorado during World War II.

History Colorado has created an exhibit, "Confined Citizens: The Amache-Granada Relocation Center, 1942-1945" where you can learn about the injustice of the internment camps. There were nine of them throughout the Western U.S. where entire families of Japanese and Japanese Americans from the West Coast were imprisoned. If you can't make it for the grand opening, go any time and see the exhibit
