Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, July 28-29, 2012

News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

JANUARY 20, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Happy (Lunar) New Year! Asians are lucky because we can celebrate the New Year both on January 1 and again on the Lunar New Year -- often referred to as "Chinese New Year."

This Lunar New Year, which falls on Monday, January 23, is a special one for the 12th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival: It marks the first complete cycle of the Chinese Zodiac since the festival debuted, and it ushers in the Year of the Water Dragon.

Is that symbolic, or what?

We're making sure this year's festival, which will be held July 28 and 29 at Sloan's Lake Park, will be bigger and better than ever, and worthy of the Year of the Water Dragon.

You can see a bevy of local Asian community Lunar New Year celebrations in our Community Calendar online, or just scroll down to our list of events below.

Kudos go to Ding Wen-Hsu, one of CDBF's founders for her induction to the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame. And, Ding has been chosen to receive the Civis Princeps or First Citizen award, the highest award Regis University bestows for outstanding work in and service to the community.

Speaking of awards, I'm proud to announce that CDBF was chosen to receive the Diversity Award from the Denver Asian Pacific American Commission and the Human Rights and Community Partnership Agency. What an honor! Also this month, I want to welcome some new members to our Operations Committee. I'm excited by the youthful energy brought to our team by so many of our new members!

I want to acknowledge once again the donations from annual efforts such as Colorado Gives Day, and the generosity of Colorado's chapter of the National Association of Asian American Professionals, which help us produce a better festival, and in the case of NAAAP, helps underwrite our new Emerging Leaders Program.

FYI: there are only 181 days until the festival!

Until next month,

Erin Yoshimura

Executive Director

New 2012 dates: Sat-Sun Juy 28-29

CDBF 2011 races Re-set your calendars and datebooks: The 2012 Colorado Dragon Boat Festival will be held on July 28 and 29, not 21-22 as originally announced.

Due to a scheduling conflict, we've moved the event to the last weekend of July.

Plan on coming out for the festivities, because this year is the 12th CDBF -- the first full cycle of the Chinese zodiac. And, 2012 is the Year of the Water Dragon -- what more fortuitous sign can there be that this year's festival will be extra-special?

Stay tuned for more details and exciting announcements for this summer!

For now, if you're interested in being involved with the festival on a race team, as a performer, vendor or volunteer, Race registrations and Performer applications will launch Feb. 1, with the others coming soon after.

Submit your CDBF design for the Year of the Dragon
CDBF 2011 Poster design winner We're announcing the 5th Annual Community Design Competition, your chance to get your creative vision onto commemorative festival posters, t-shirts and other items, and win a cash prize to boot.

Last year's winner, Fort Collins graphic artist Shawn Mingjian Xiong, whose poster is shown here, evoked Old West wanted posters and Chinese paper cutting to combine cultures.

This year offers a great opportunity to be creative with the theme of the Year of the Water Dragon in the Chinese lunar zodiac.

The competition is a partnership with the Asian Arts Coordinating Council. Entries will be judged by a panel of judges and the
top three winners will receive cash prizes - First Place: $300, Second Place: $200, Third Place: $100.

The deadline to submit your design is March 30th, 2012, so start generating ideas! Visit the CDBF website for rules and a link to the entry form.

Congrats to CDBF founder Ding Wen Hsu!

Ding Wen-Hsu, CDBF FounderWe're thrilled to share the news that Ding Wen-Hsu, one of the founders of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, is going to be inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame!

A successful businesswoman as well as a leader within Colorado's Asian community, Ding has been a tireless and constant presence within CDBF -- the Operations Committee has for years called her "Mom" because the festival is her baby.

She served as the leader of the Operations Committee, served as Chair of the festival's Board of Directors, and is still involved as the chair of the Race Committee and Sponsorships.

Ding deserves the props and we're all proud that "Mom" is going to be honored by the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame.

Later this spring, Ding will be receiving another honor: She's been chosen to receive the Civis Princeps or First Citizen Award from Regis University, the highest award bestowed by the school for outstanding work in and service to the community. Double congratulations, Ding!
Welcome to new Operations Committee members!
The mostly volunteer Operations Committee that brings you the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival every year is an amazing, energetic and passionate group of leaders who bring their skills and talents to their roles in the festival. She likes to go hiking and camping, although in the winter she enjoys cooking different ethnic foods and watching a good foreign movie. A woman of free spirit, open mind and a big heart, Wendy has been volunteering at the CDBF office since August and she is excited for helping the festival even more!

CDBF gets an award!

CDBF Mayor's Diversity Award Aw shucks. We were honored at the end of the year to receive Mayor Michael Hancock's Diversity Award from the Denver Asian Pacific American Commission.

Our goal is straightforward: "The mission of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is to build bridges of awareness, knowledge and understanding between the diverse Asian Pacific American (APA) communities and the general public through cultural education, leadership development, and athletic competition.

It's nice to know someone thinks we're doing something right!

Post-holiday thank you's for December donations

NAAAP ColoradoWe'd like to take a few words to thank those of you who donated to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival during Colorado Gives Day in December. The event, which promoted donating to your favorite non-profit organizations, was a stunning statewide success, raising $12 million, and CDBF was a recipient of some of that generosity.

Later in December, the  Colorado chapter of the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) held a Holiday Gala at Coors Field, and a portion of the funds raised at that event was donated to CDBF's Emerging Leaders Program for young Asian American Pacific Islanders. The inaugural program will train almost a dozen incredible future leaders over several workshops this year.

Many thanks to Colorado NAAAP!
