News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

NOVEMBER 22, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

I'm feeling thankful!

This is the season to take stock of the  abundance in our lives, and looking over the history of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, I'm overwhelmed -- and grateful -- by the growth of the festival, the outpouring of participation, and the many great friends I've made over the years with CDBF!

I'm also excited because I'm looking forward to next year, which marks the 12th annual festival, our first cycle around the Chinese lunar zodiac, and it'll be a very special one because it's the Year of the Dragon ... the Year of the Water Dragon, in fact. We'll be pulling out all the stops to make it an unforgettable festival. The planning has already started, with the choice of the dates: Saturday and Sunday July 21-22, 2012.

We have another reason to be grateful.

The second annual Colorado Gives Day, a day-long event sponsored by the Giving First Foundation and underwritten by a grant from FirstBank, means that if you make a donation to CDBF on December 6, your donation will be partially matched that day.

Yes, you can donate the other 365 days of the year and no amount is considered too small. What's great about Giving First is that 100% of your donation will go to CDBF without any hidden fees or charges. So, if you donate on December 6, we'll get 100% plus a bonus. Read more below, and please consider helping sustain CDBF into the future!

I want to welcome or newest Operations Committee member, Charmaine Camvel, as co-chair of the Main Performing Arts Stage, and meanwhile put out a call for an Operations Manager for CDBF, a key role as we move forward into the future.

And, last but not least, I want to send out condolences to the family of Tom Herman, a CDBF volunteer and a pioneer of dragon boat racing in the midwest, who passed away Nov. 11.

Have a wonderful, family-filled Thanksgiving!

Until next time,

Erin Yoshimura
Executive Director

It's official: The dates for the 2012 Colorado Dragon Boat Festival are Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22!

Mark your calendars now, because next year is the Year of the Dragon and it heralds the first full cycle of the Asian lunar calendar since we launched the festival in 2001. Next year's fest promises to be a big and special one, so you won't want to miss it!

Consider giving to CDBF on Dec. 6, COLORADO GIVES DAY!

Colorado Gives Day 2011Last year, the generosity of Coloradans shined when $8.7 million was donated to their favorite local charities -- far exceeding the original $1 million goal. The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival was one of the recipients of your generosity, and we're excited to announce Colorado Gives Day 2011!

For 24 hours starting at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, you can donate to CDBF and your donation will be increased by the Community First Foundation, thanks to a $300,000 Incentive Fund from FirstBank, the corporate partner for Colorado Gives Day.

The whole purpose of Colorado Gives Day is to support the nonprofits that protect and nurture the quality of life in Colorado, and we are honored to be among those organizations! Your donation is safe and secure and is tax-deductible to the extent of the law. Best of all, 100% of your donation will go to CDBF -- plus the bonus allocation from the Incentive Fund. No administrative fees are deducted from any of your donations.

You can read more about Colorado Gives Day and more about the Community First Foundation. But it's most important that you visit this page to donate to CDBF during Colorado Gives Day, Dec 6!

Welcome Charmaine Camvel to the CDBF family!

Her past employers run the gamut from Fortune 500 firms and nonprofits to celebrities such as Paula Abdul. Charmaine is presently employed at Humana MarketPOINT in sales administration.

Charmaine is eager to showcase the best local talent from the Asian American Pacific Islander community next summer for the Year of the Dragon!

Farewell to Tom Herman, 1941-2011

Tom Herman We've lost a friend of the festival, and of dragon boat racing.

Tom Herman passed away on Nov. 11. We extend our sympathy to his family and friends, and especially to Derek, his son who served as the chair of the Race Committee for CDBF.

Tom was a pioneer of dragon boat racing, and introduced Derek to the sport when the family lived in the midwest, before they moved to Denver. He was a longtime DJ for dances and parties, but he also helped establish the American Dragon Boat Association in Iowa. The ADBA was instrumental in the early years of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, by bringing boats for our festival.

Tom volunteered as CDBF'sRace Starting Director for several years.

He was given a beautiful tribute by his family and friends at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church in Castle where he was an active member of the congregation.

Rest in peace, Tom. You can read his full bio online.
