Center for Asian Studies Speaker Series: "Puppets: A Live Wayang Golek"
When: Fri. Sept. 16, 5 pm
Where: Outdoors on the CU-Boulder Norlin Quad
Cost: Free
Indonesian puppet performance by Kathy Foley & I Made Lasmawan, a master Balinese drummer and composer. Sunda/West Java Sunda is the culturally rich region of West Java which covers the western third of the Indonesian island of Java. The mountainous region of Priangan ("abode of the gods") with its capital of Bandung is currently a major industrial and economic area of Indonesia. It is inhabited by ethnic Sundanese who are culturally and linguistically differentiated from the Javanese who live in other parts of the island. Wayang puppetry and gamelan, as they are currently performed in Sunda are influenced by the older Cirebonese traditions, but all the arts are re-interpreted with the more democratic and down-to-earth worldview of the highlands. Modern times have seen great artistic resurgence and creativity in Sunda, especially around the city of Bandung. The lively percussion of the drum. The smaller gamelan ensemble using a selendro scale for the Hindu-based stories, and humorous approach to the material reflect a Sundanese world. Where: Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts 1750 38th Street, Boulder
Cost: Free ($10 tax-deductible donation requested)
The Yi Jing (or I Ch'ing), the Classic of Change, written more than 2,000 years ago, is the world's only spiritual classic devoted to the theme of change itself. After introducing the history and philosophy of the text, we will explore it as a tool for self-understanding and divination. We will also learn how to use the book in conjunction with a simple toss of coins or the observation of omens in nature (Plum Blossom Numerology) to predict likely futures and answer "big questions", such as those that concern life purpose, relationships, and health. Most importantly, studying the Yi Jing helps us sense the changing river of life and either ride gracefully with the current or gently redirect its flow to create more peace and harmony in our lives. Ken Cohen (Gao Han) is a China scholar, Qigong master, and practicing Taoist, with more than 40 years experience in the Yi Jing. He is the author of "The Way of Qigong" (Ballantine Books) and "Taoism: Essential Teachings of the Way and Its Power" (Sounds True audio). Contact: info@academychinesearts.org, 303.507.3800.

Many events for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games took place in the brand new, 100,000-seat National Stadium. Design plans for this massive structure began in 2003, when Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were selected by the Chinese government to design the new stadium, which because of its curved steel-net walls was soon dubbed by locals as the "bird's nest." BIRD'S NEST chronicles this five-year effort, as well as Herzog and de Meuron's design for a new city district in Jinhua, involving hotels, office and residential buildings. Both projects involved complex and often difficult negotiations and communications between two cultures, two architectural traditions and two political systems. Herzog and de Meuron, the Basle-based architects, find themselves working with China's largest state construction company, Chinese artist and architect Ai Wei Wei, lawyers, and countless government bureaucrats.
