News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
JULY 26, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Are you ready for the 11th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival? We are, and we're very excited to offer you the best festival yet!

We have 51 teams competing in seven divisions, and those teams include our first-ever international competitors, the Aquaholics from Toronto, Canada! We also welcome the Golden Dragons from Portland, Oregon of all seniors over 50... and the oldest paddler on the team is 94 years young!

Don't miss the colorful and dynamic Opening Ceremony at 10 am Saturday, which includes an Olympics-style Team Parade, Spiritual Eye-Dotting Ceremony to Awaken the Spirit of the Dragon, and the exciting Dragon Dance, all presided over by emcees Deborah Takahara and Chris Jose of KDVR Fox31. Speaking of which, have you seen our cute TV commercial yet?

Preview the festival with a sneak peek at the 2011 Program Book, or a map of the festival site

Don't forget to enter to win a scooter in our Raffle when you're at Sloan's Lake, or get your Passport to Asia stamped so you can enter to win an iPad2.

Just for fun and to get you pumped up for this weekend, listen to veteran CDBF performer Dwight Mark's official theme song of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival! He'll be playing the song live during his performance with guitarist Jack Hadley at 3 pm Saturday.

Finally, here's a list of Festival Guidelines so you'll have the best experience when you visit Sloan's Lake Park this weekend.

Below is a list of new and noteworthy features at CDBF 2011 that you won't want to miss, including news about parking at INVESCO Field with shuttle bus

Thanks so much for your support -- the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival has grown and improved each year because of your attendance and suggestions. Visit our website or Facebook page and share your comments afterwards!

Have a great time at the festival! We'll be back in August with another newsletter to wrap up this year's festival.

Until next time,

Erin Yoshimura

Back by popular demand: Parking at INVESCO Field!

INVESCO FieldFor the past two years, the most consistent request from festival-goers has been to bring back parking at INVESCO Field with shuttle buses to Sloan's Lake Park.

So this year, we're bringing back parking at INVESCO Field, with buses to transport guests to and from the festival.

We're charging a SMALL FEE OF $5 PER CAR WITH FREE BUS RIDES RUNNING ALL WEEKEND
to and from the festival. CDBF parking will be in LOT G at INVESCO Field.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to park at the stadium and take the convenient bus ride a few minutes to the festival site. We want to be good neighbors to the Sloan's Lake area residents and businesses, and offer our guests a better experience than parking many bocks away and hiking to the festival.

LOT G at INVESCO Field is on the west side of the stadium, along Federal Blvd.

You can see more information and a parking lot map of INVESCO Field here.

Dragon Boat 101: Feel the fun of dragon boat racing!

Dragon Boat 101Have you wanted to try dragon boat racing but never could convince 19 of your friends to join you in paddling?

Well, here's your chance -- sign up for Dragon Boat 101, where you'll get an introduction to the excitement of racing on a dragon boat team. The experts of the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado will train you, put on a personal flotation device (that's lifejacket to you) and give you a paddle so you can race with other novices.

DB101 costs $20, and is available for adults or youth aged 13-17. You can print out registration forms online and bring them to the festival, or you can sign up at the festival. DB101 starts at 11:48 am on Sunday, July 30.

Try it -- you may be inspired to get a full team together next year!

Come to the festival, win a scooter or iPad!

LIKE 500 scooter

When you're having fun at the festival, don't forget to enter to win some great prizes.

First, our CDBF Raffle is giving away a LIKE 50 scooter from Sportique Scooters, and tickets are just $5 each for a chance to win. Other prizes include a flatscreen TV, and a deluxe Mahjong set. The winning ticket will be drawn Sunday at 5 pm on the Main Performing Arts Stage, and you don't have to be present to win.

Second, we've brought back the Passport to Asia activity, and you can print out your passport in advance or pick one up at the festival. Just go to the six areas of CDBF in the Passport and answer a trivia question for a stamp. Once you've filled your passport, just drop it off at the University of Northern Colorado booth, and you'll be entered to win an iPad2 from UNC.

Third, look for the BGV booth at the festival and fill out a survey to help us improve our festival. We take your feedback seriously and incorporate suggestions for the next year. When you submit your survey, you'll be entered for a drawing for another iPad2, so you'll have three ways to win at the festival!

New and Noteworthy

Taste of Asia picnicHere are some highlights of the 11th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival:

NEW: Japanese Obon Dance:

To pay tribute to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, we'll have a Japanese Obon or Bon Odori Dance, in which the public can dance along following the movements of the Denver Buddhist Temple Minyo Kai dance troupe. It's fun - like Japanese line dancing, but in a circle! More on the Obon Dance:

NEW: Wellness Village:

This new area will offer free screenings and health education at the festival. Our focus is keeping the community healthy by providing different alternatives for health. List of participating health organizations:
http://www.cdbf.org/marketplace/new-wellness-village/

NEW: imaginAsian Mural Collaboration:

Our first-ever interactive art project is a collaboration of local artists and the public to create four unique projects with the theme "Ode to Japan." The organizations include Arts Street, the Ladies Fancywork Society, Rawh Expressions and Squidworks comic artists. Festival visitors have been submitting ideas for the Arts Street mural in advance, and visitors will be able to contribute to most of the art during the festival. More about the mural project:

NEW: Asian Food Truck Stop:

Food Trucks are hot, and we've invited Denver's first Asian food truck to the festival. A cultural celebration for the tastebuds. Manna from Heaven will serve up their delicious version of traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches at the event's first food truck. Manna from Heaven will be parked in our first-ever Taste of Asia Food Truck Stop. The other trucks are Route 40, serving great Argentinian food, and Colorado Buffalo Grill. Dragon Boat Races:

These exciting competitions celebrate the ancient Chinese tradition and athletic test of endurance and teamwork. Races begin at 8:00 am each day. In addition to the event's first international team from Toronto, the races will feature a team from Portland consisting of all seniors over the age of 50, including the most senior competitor out there, who is 94 years young. Imagine paddling and beating much younger competitors at that age! Full list of teams:

Performances:

A variety of inspiring cultural performances will take place throughout the weekend. The Main Performing Arts Stage will feature dancers and music from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Ranging from traditional Chinese dance to alternative rock, Japanese Taiko drummers and even hip hop and martial arts, these performances reflect a breadth of talent locally in Colorado. Gateway to Asia will feature more intimate performances and showcases interactive educational exhibits. Full Main Performing Arts Stage lineup is available online at:

http://www.cdbf.org/performance/main-performing-arts-stage/2011-main-stage-performers/

Dragonland:

Since the very first Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, we've included an area for children so they can be introduced to Asian cultures with fun activities, guided by volunteers from such organizations as Girl Scouts and the Denver Art Museum. This year we're introducing some kid-friendly games in Dragonland to keep children even more entertained. For 2011, CDBF is also proud to announce a new Dragonland stage that will feature children's performers and storytellers to enhance the "edutainment" available for young people at the festival. More Dragonland details:

http://www.cdbf.org/performance/dragonland/

Gateway to Asia:

The Gateway to Asia stages will highlight Japanese performers for our festival theme. "Gambare Japan" ("Persevere, Japan"), and we'll have a tent all about Japanese culture and traditions, as well as a separate exhibit about the Japanese American Experience, including information about Amache, the World War II Japanese American internment camp in southeast Colorado. This exhibit will also feature special guests the Amache Preservation Society, a group of students from Granada Undivided High School who work on preserving and restoring the Amache site. Full Gateway performers and schedule online:

Cultural Unity:

Our popular hip-hop showcase is bigger than ever this year, so everyone can get a great view of the eye-popping dance moves going on under the tent. Did you know that there are local DJs in Denver that have national reputations? Come out and get an introduction to the hip-hop scene this weekend! Here's the full Cultural Unity schedule:

Taste of Asia:

A variety of Asian cuisines will be available in the Taste of Asia Food Pavilion, representing Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Hawai'ian, Laotian, Indian, and more. For those who may not be adventurous diners, there'll be typical festival fare such as hot dogs, funnel cakes and pizza. But who wants to miss fresh squeezed sugar cane juice from Tropical Paradise (Laotian), or try the new Bento Box from Kokoro (Japanese)? Bam-Bu, a winning booth from last year's Culinary Contest , is serving a new item this year: Korean Kalbi Burgers. Or for dessert, try one of 21 flavors of Mochi Ice Cream from a first-time vendor, Smooch? Complete list of Taste of Asia vendors: http://www.cdbf.org/marketplace/2011-taste-of-asia-vendors/

Asian Marketplace:

Every year, our Marketplace is a virtual international bazaar of Asian gifts, art, jewelry, toys, fashions and accessories for all ages. From cool hip t-shirts to incredible massage chairs; from information about Panda bears to handmade hats from Madagascar that help fund educational efforts across the globe, you'll be able to shop 'til you drop. There's still time to volunteer!

CDBF volunteers We could still use just a few more volunteers to help bring the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival to life on July 30-31.

The festival relies on the 300 or more people who run the stage, manage the races, help people at information booths, paint kids' faces in Dragonland, make sure performers stay on time, guide traffic and keep tabs on lots more details large and small that have to happen for an event like ours to run smoothly.

Jennifer Nguyen, Volunteer Manager, personally invites you to join the CDBF family in a video on our Volunteer page.
