CDBF 2011 July 30-31 Sloan's Lake Park

News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
JULY 8, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

It's July ... and the festival is just a few short weeks away!

The dedicated Operations Committee that puts on this festive annual cultural celebration and athletic competition is hard at work, finishing up our preparations to make sure we'll have the best festival yet.

We're debuting a couple of features at this year's festival that are worth noting:

First, we need your suggestions on what to include in our new imaginAsian Mural Collaboration. Help ArtsStreet choose the images for its mural by sending us what comes to your mind when you think of Japan! Send your ideas to imaginAsian@cdbf.org.

Second, we invite you to join us for the first-ever traditional Japanese Obon Dance to be held at CDBF, on Saturday July 30 at 6 pm. If you've ever attended the Obon Dance at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, you know it's easy, fun and a blast -- it's like Japanese line dancing, only in a circle!

We're still looking for volunteers to join the CDBF family and help at this year's festival. It's not too late to sign up and request which area you'd like to be assigned to.

We've also just announced the Honorary Chair for 2011, Dr. Rudolph Lie, the founder of the Asian Pacific Development Center. He's an inspiration to many of us for his dedication to serving the Asian community, especially Asian immigrants.

And finally, you may have seen our 2011 posters around town. You can read about Shawn Mingjiang Xiong, the winner of our Community Design Contest, who came up with the idea for this winning design.

We'll send along two newsletters again this month, so expect another in a couple of weeks with more big news about this year's festival, and tips for getting the most enjoyment out of attending CDBF!

Until next time,

Erin Yoshimura
Executive Director

imaginAsian Mural Collaboration wants your input!

Ladies Fancywork Society art projectWe're introducing an exciting new feature to the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival this year: The imaginAsian Mural Collaboration

Four different groups will be creating interactive art murals during the festival with Japan as the theme, and we want YOUR input on what should be in one of them.

ArtsStreet, an organization that trains under-served youth to learn art skills for their careers, will be making a mural guided by your suggestions: What do you think of when you hear "Japan"? Anime? Sushi? Mount Fuji? Cars? Technology and video games? Send your ideas to imaginAsian@cdbf.org and ArtsStreet will include them in the mural!

You can also bring items to attach to a collage mural about Japan by the Ladies Fancywork Society (you may have seen their crocheted flowers on fences around town, above), including origami cranes that you can make at the festival's Dragonland children's area. You can contribute to urban graffiti art crew RAWH Expressions' spray-paint mural. And, you can watch some of the Denver area's best comic artists collaborate on the fourth mural project.

Read more about the imaginAsian Mural Collaboration on the CDBF website!

We're still looking for a few good volunteers

CDBF volunteersWe're still looking for volunteers to help bring the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival to life on July 30-31.

The festival relies on the 300 or more people who run the stage, manage the races, help people at information booths, paint kids' faces in Dragonland, make sure performers stay on time, guide traffic and keep tabs on lots more details large and small that have to happen for an event like ours to run smoothly.

Jennifer Nguyen, Volunteer Manager, personally invites you to join the CDBF family in a video on our Volunteer page.

NEW: Join the fun Japanese Obon Dance

Minyo Kai dance groupAnother new feature we're introducing at the 11th annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is the Japanese Obon Dance, a dance to pay tribute to ancestors and the victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Join us Saturday at 6 pm at the Main Performing Arts Stage for this traditional dance. You don't need any experience, or any fancy kimonos -- it's like Japanese line dancing, only in a circle! Just watch the members of the Minyo Kai group in the center circle and follow their moves, and you'll do just fine.

Watch a video to see how fun Obon dancing can be, and plan on joining us at the festival!

Meet the 2010 Honorary Chair
Rudy Lie, CDBF 2011 Honorary ChairEach year, the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival names an Honorary Chair to represent the festival and serve as an inspiration for the area's Asian and Asian American communities. The Honorary Chair is a role model not only for her or his level of success and leadership, but also for a proven and lifelong commitment to serving the Asian Pacific American communities.

We're proud to announce the 2011 CDBF Honorary Chair: Dr. Rudolph Lie!

Dr. Lie is a founder of the Asian Pacific Development Center, which serves the Asian community's health needs including mental health, a mission based on his experience helping Vietnam war refugees. Dr. Lie has worked at all levels of the community, including serving on commissions and, in the late 1970s, serving with a Task Panel on Special Population of The President's Commission on Mental Health, co-chaired by First Lady Rosalyn Carter.

We're proud to have such a renowned leader and stalwart community activist in Colorado.

Congrats to the Community Design Contest winner!

CDBF 2011 Poster design winner

You may have already seen it: This year's CDBF poster evokes the cultural tradition of Chinese paper-cutting art as well as the feel of an old-west "Wanted" poster.

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival's annual Community Design Competition is a showcase for creativity and graphic design ability, and that's what we got in our entries for 2011. The winning design each year is showcased not just on posters, but on commemorative merchandise that might include special edition posters, t-shirts and other items.

After judging this year's entries we're proud to announce the 2011 Community Design Competition First Place winner, who will receive a $300 prize: Shawn Mingjiang Xiong

You can read about Shawn's design concept, and see the runners-up designs on our website.
