News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
JUNE 17, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Can you believe the festival is 5 weeks away?

As you can see from all the news below, the 11th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is coming together nicely, and we have more announcements to make to get you into the festival spirt!

Many people come to the festival for the shopping and food -- it's such a rich and vibrant bazaar that's truly like taking a tour across the Pacific without leaving Colorado. You can plan your shopping, and more important, your dining, now that we've announced our Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendors.

We've also unveiled our list of performers for the 2011 Cultural Unity hip-hop showcase stage. Cultural Unity has become a very popular area of the festival and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Have you ever wanted to be a sportscaster? Here's your opportunity -- we're looking for a few good voices to call the play-by-play of the dragon boat races. Learn more and apply if you think you have The Voice.

And, if you don't cook, dance, sing or paddle but still want to participate in the festival, consider volunteering. It's a great way to meet new people, learn an aspect about the festival and get a cool volunteer t-shirt and sustenance. Sign up early to secure your area: http://www.cdbf.org/volunteer/

I'd also like to introduce our Race Committee, who have been working hard to plan a well-organized and exciting weekend of dragon boat races!

Until next time,

Erin Yoshimura
Executive Director

Marketplace and Taste of Asia vendors announced

Thai Pepper's Monkey Balls are back! It's time to start planning your menu for the festival weekend!

We've chosen the vendors who'll cook up a culinary tour of Asia and the Pacific Rim at the 2011 CDBF (with some American-food choices for those of you who'd rather keep your taste buds in Colorado).

You'll see familiar booths: Thai Pepper is where chef Cha Hasadinratana rings his bell and yells out "Monkey Balls!" every time someone orders his beef and pork meatballs, which are deep-fried then grilled.

You'll also see the return of Kokoro to the festival, which is perfect for our Japan theme for this year. Where else can you sample Mongolian, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and Laotian dishes all in one place? We're also welcoming the area's first ever Asian food truck, Manna from Heaven, which will be serving delicious Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches.

In the Marketplace, you'll find arts and crafts vendors with gifts from China, Japan, Hawai'i, and even Madagascar, plus non-profits you'll want to support (who doesn't want to save Panda bars?). We're also featuring our first-ever Wellness & Education Village, where you can get a number of screenings and get information to promote your health.

You can see the full list of vendors for both the Marketplace and Taste of Asia on our website.

Cultural Unity performers announced

Cultural Unity showcases hip hop culture

Since its introduction in 2007, the Cultural Unity hip-hop showcase has become one of the most popular features of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.

It's an acknowledgement of young Asian Americans' interest in hip-hop dance, music and poetry, at the same time it's also a reflection of the diversity and inclusiveness of hip-hop culture in general!

This year, Cultural Unity will have a larger stage and more entertainment than ever before. You'll groove to Denver's top DJs, including world famous DJ Vajra and our hometown hero, DJ Chonz; see some of the hottest hip-hop dance crews in the region performing; intense exhibition battles of some of the fastest rising Bboys and Bgirls in the scene; and not to forget thought-provoking spoken word as well as high energy martial arts demonstrations!

There will also be performances of pure rhythm - Denver Taiko moves over from the Main Performing Arts Stage for a demonstration of Japanese drumming, and Kissidugu will showcase West African drumming styles.

Stop by and get down with the funky sounds and get ready for a rocking weekend of Cultural Unity!

We're looking for a few good voices
CDBF 2009 race announcer Joseph Greene

One of the thrills of following sports events is hearing the play-by-play of the announcers, whether it's for a broadcast or live at the stadium or field.

If you have The Voice and think you can handle play-by-play chatter, apply as one of our Dragon Boat Race Announcers  for 2011.

You don't need to know all about dragon boat racing, although that would help, and we'll train you on what to call and how to tell which team wins each race. We can teach you all that.... But you gotta have The Voice.

Meet our Race Committee
Ding-Wen HsuOne of the biggest teams on the CDBF Operations Committee is the team that brings you the races and dragon boat teams.

The team is led by Ding-Wen Hsu, the chair of the Races & Teams Committee. Ding-Wen, a native of Taiwan, is co-owner and President of Pacific Western Technologies Ltd. (PWT), a Colorado company established in 1987. She has been very active in the Asian and Chinese American communities in Denver since she moved to Colorado in 1978. She is one of the founders of Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.

Mike BoydMichael Boyd serves as President, and is one of the founding members, of the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado. DRACO's primary goal is to promote dragon boat racing locally, and to train competitive dragon boat teams to compete in local, national and international races. An affiliate of the CDBF, DRACO provides assistance in a variety of ways in connection with the annual festival, including coordinating and supervising training sessions scheduled by the various teams competing in the festival, and running critical race operations. Mike got his start in dragon boating in 2003, when he formed a team to race in the CDBF as a fund-raiser to help send three students (including himself) to Brisbane, Australia to compete as part of Team USA in the International TaeKwon-Do Championships. He has led a DRACO team, Phantom Dragons, to compete in out-of-state festivals.

Pepito CastellanesPepito Castellanes and wife Nancy have been Colorado residents since 1977. They raised three children and have been active in the community. Pepito has been a member of several community organizations including the Asian Roundtable of Colorado and Governor's Asian Advisory Board, and was a two-term president of the Philippine-American Society of Colorado (PASCO). He also coached the PASCO Pinoy Dragons race team for CDBF 2008. Pepito is a professional engineer; he graduated from the University of Colorado with a BSEE degree and now works for the US government. He volunteered to help CDBF and is now in charge of the Registration Team.

Derek HermanDerek Herman has been involved with the sport of dragon boat racing since 1986 when he raced for Team USA at the Taipei International Dragon Boat Competition. Over the years he has helped promote the sport as a paddler, sternsman, and race organizer and has helped to form several dragon boat organizations. He has helped organize several festivals throughout the Midwest and has been on the Race Committee with the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival since 2002.

In 2004 Stan Smartwood was approached by Claire, his girlfriend at the time to be a part of their paddling team. He declined thinking that dragon boating was more gimmick than substance. In 2005 he was approached again by his girlfriend about dragon boating. Stan SmartwoodThis time around he accepted and paddled with the first-year Flying Dragons. The team placed 3rd overall and Stan was instantly hooked on the sport. In 2007 the Flying Dragons returned, finishing 1st overall. During this time, Stan married his girlfriend Claire and together with friends and family they continued to race with the Flying Dragons. In 2010 the Flying Dragons obtained a boat in honor of a fallen teammate, and sought out coaching from a member of the US Women's Premier team. The team went on to place 2nd at CDBF and also made their first out-of-state race at the Rose Regatta in Las Vegas, placing 2nd overall. In June of 2011 he will join a Seattle team as he attends his first international race in Vancouver at the Rio Tinto Alcan Festival.

Tom GingTom Ging has been a driving force for CDBF's dragon boat races since first year when he was a paddler on a team. He was a member of the Operations Committee and now is on the Race Committee. He also helps train racers with DRACO, and for the festival.

It takes a big team because the Dragon Boat Races are a very special part of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, and it's a complex operation to manage 51 race teams of over 20 members each, competing in six different divisions over the weekend!

Join Our Team: Be a CDBF Volunteer

2008 CDBF volunteersWe're still taking applications for volunteers to help bring the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival to life on July 30-31. The festival relies on the 300 or more people who run the stage, manage the races, help people at information booths, paint kids' faces in Dragonland, make sure performers stay on time, guide traffic and keep tabs on lots more details large and small that have to happen for an event like ours to run smoothly.

If you or a group of friends want to help, sign up on our website's Volunteer page

We'd love to welcome you to our festival family!
