News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
JUNE 3, 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

The 11th Annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner, and to help you prepare to have the best time at the event, we'll send two newsletters each for June and July.

The festival is coming together and promises to be the best yet since we began this pan-Asian celebration in 2001!

Our website is your resource for all the latest news about the festival, so please visit regularly.

I'm excited to announce the lineup for the Main Performing Arts Stage! We had so many applicants that it was difficult for the screening committee to make its decisions, but this year we're introducing half a dozen fresh faces to the mix.

We've also announced our Dragon Boat Race Teams for 2011. It's the main event for many of you, and we're especially thrilled to welcome both an out-of-town team from Portland and our FIRST international team, coming all the way from Toronto, Canada!

The Operations Committee is working hard to make sure you have a great experience at the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival -- scroll down and meet the members of our Public Safety Team.

As the weather warms up, so does the summer Asian festivals and events season! Be sure to check out the calendar listing below and on our website.

Until next time,

Erin Yoshimura
Executive Director

Stagestruck: Meet the 2011 Main Stage Performers

Dance2Live

The 2011 Main Performing Arts Stage acts have been chosen, and this year, festival-goers can enjoy some fresh new faces alongside some old favorites.

Veteran performers such as Denver Taiko, Mudra Dance Studio, Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu, Christina Yeh Dance and Wendy Woo are back. But joining them for the first time will be hip-hop dance crew Dance2Live, shown here, as well as an unusual duo, Erhoopla, that plays pop songs and traditional folk tunes on the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument.

You'll see 10-year-old Diya Deepak gracefully performing semi-classical South Indian dances, a very cool Korean youth drum group called Dudrim and a Burmese performance.

We're featuring Doug Yoshimura and the Cheapsuits Blues Band for the first time this year. And there are also two young alternative rock bands featuring Asian American talent, One Sun One Moon, a Hmong and Laotian American "garage pop rock" group and Pearls For Breakfast, led by the powerful voice of Filipino-Mexican singer-songwriter Kenny Lee Young.

Other returning familiar favorites include National Martial Arts Academy, Gamelan Tunas Mekar, Thai Harmony Traditional Arts Ensemble, MON-AEL Mongolian Cultural Center, the Filipino American Community of Colorado and Dwight Mark, who wrote the festival official theme song, "Go Go Dragonboat."

More than ever, CDBF's Main Performing Arts Stage is a celebration of Asian and Asian American diversity and range of talent!

Check out the Main Performing Arts Stage lineup for 2011 on our website. (Stay tuned for the performers for Gateway to Asia and the Cultural Unity hip hop stage!)

Paddles up! Here Are the 2011 Race Teams

Paddles up at CDBF

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival this year marks a new milestone: We're welcoming our first international team, the cleverly-named Aquaholics from Toronto, Canada. We're also joined by a senior dragon boat team traveling from Portland, the Golden Dragons.

These two will take to the water along with 48 local teams (there's still a spot available for a Youth Team!) and a community pickup team for the 11th annual CDBF Dragon Boat Races, a highlight of the festival.

This ancient sport is fast-paced and exciting to watch, and equally exciting and fun to compete in. Dragon boat racing is a great team-building activity, and one way to build the team spirit is to choose a cool, clever name. Here are some of this year's best names:

Rocket Dragons - sponsored by Lockheed Martin... OK, so it's obvious but it's still a cool name

Wagenkamp's Frozen Fishsticks - Wagenlander & Heisterkamp, LLC)

sNAAAPing Dragons - NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals)

Got Pho? - youth team sponsored by Denver Chinese School and Colorado International School

My Row is Tight - SerrStudio

Health and Hope Dragons - Project C.U.R.E. dragon boat sponsored by Amgen

See the full list of 2011 Race Teams on the CDBF website.

The CDBF Public Safety Team Is There to Help
Tarika Cefkin

In our ongoing series to introduce you to our Operations Committee, meet the team that makes sure you have a safe, healthy and fun time when you're at the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, whether it's managing the traffic flow or being on hand for emergencies. Here are our Public Safety Committee co-chairs:

First, to the right, Tarika Cefkin is a newcomer to the Operations Committee, but she's no stranger to CDBF -- she's performed or been a spectator at every festival since the first year. She recently graduated from the University of Denver with an M.A. in International and Intercultural Communications, concentration in Human Rights. A long-time Colorado resident, Tarika grew up very involved in Colorado's Thai community performing with various Thai music and dance troupes around the Denver Metro area. She is passionate about raising intercultural awareness and currently works for the Nathan Yip Foundation, an organization that funds educational projects for children around the world.

Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson, left, says "I am honored to share in this opportunity to assist in the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival as a way of giving back to my community. Being of mixed ethnicity, the Festival also allows me to extend appreciation of my Asian/Pacific Rim heritage." Michael's education originally centered around art, but his career path evolved into the age of Software and Information Technology where he's been conducting the practice of Software Configuration Management over the last 18 years. This is Michael's first year on the Operations Committee.

Tom Kazutomi

Like Tarika, Tom Kazutomi (right) might be new to the CDBF Operations Committee, but he's a veteran of the festival. He's a paramedic field training officer at Denver Health Paramedic Division. He served as one of the paramedics providing care to festival guests from 2002-'06. From '06-2009, he was a festival volunteer as the liaison to the paramedics. Last year took to the water and was captain of a race team he organized.

Dino Gavito, the grizzled veteran of the Pubic Safety Team who's been with CDBF for 10 years, has been a Denver Police Officer for 29 years. We value his insight and experience, and his dedication to his work!

Join Our Team: Be a CDBF Volunteer

CDBF VolunteersWe're still taking applications for volunteers to help bring the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival to life on July 30-31. The festival relies on the 300 or more people who run the stage, manage the races, help people at information booths, paint kids' faces in Dragonland, make sure performers stay on time, guide traffic and keep tabs on lots more details large and small that have to happen for an event like ours to run smoothly.

If you or a group of friends want to help, sign up on our website's Volunteer page. We'd love to welcome you to our festival family!
