News from the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
MAY 2011

Welcome!
Erin Yoshimura, CDBF Executive Director

Dear CDBF Community-

Happy Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

The whole month of May is dedicated to celebrate Asian culture and AAPI accomplishments. Given that there are nearly 40 different ethnic groups underneath the AAPI umbrella and combine that with various levels of acculturation and assimliation, one month is barely enough time to scratch the surface!

What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you? How are you celebrating your culture? We'd love to know so please share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

I'm ecstatic to have found that Comcast's Xfinity On-Demand has a myriad of movies, documentaries and shows dedicated to AAPI Heritage Month available for viewing -- many for free!

More than ever, local Colorado communities are celebrating, too. Be sure to check out the calendar listings below.

Also this month, the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival needs YOUR help nominating leaders from your communities as the 2011 Honorary Chair. The deadline is May 31. The nomination criteria and a link to past Honorary Chairs are below.

The Operations Committee is working hard to bring you the best Colorado Dragon Boat Festival yet! The festival is like celebrating AAPI Heritage Month but within two days. We've had an amazing number of applications for performing arts and vendors this year. Stay tuned for June as we'll share 2011 programming.

Until next month,

Erin Yoshimura
Executive Director

Nominate your choice for CDBF 2011 Honorary Chair!
Daniel Oh, 2010 Honorary Chair
Daniel Oh, 2010 Honorary Chair

Since the very first year in 2001, the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival has proudly named a leader within the Asian American Pacific Islander community as our Honorary Chair.

The Honorary Chair is a role model to other AAPIs -- especially to young people -- for their dedication to their own community as well as to the area's Asian community as a whole.

The position is one that's filled by the community -- we need your nominations for our panel to judge and name the Honorary Chair for the 2011 festival.

You can see the list of past Honorary Chairs, as well as meet the 2010 Honorary Chair, Daniel Oh, on our website.

Here are the selection criteria:

* Proven champion or advocate of the Asian community
* Strong, outspoken advocate for the organization and events
* Comfortable with public appearances and public speaking
* Comfortable with interviews and being filmed on camera
* Available to attend the majority of CDBF events and the Festival itself
* One individual nominated per calendar year by the community
* Must be a Colorado resident

Nomination process:

Submit a one-page letter to the CDBF with your nomination, explaining how this person meets the Honorary Chair criteria. Email the nomination letter to: info@cdbf.org or mail it to: 11049 West 44th Ave #110, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  Nominations must be emailed or postmarked by Tuesday, May 31. The CDBF Board of Directors will announce the 2011 Honorary Chair by mid-June.

Be a Non-Profit Partner, raise money during CDBF!

AAJA's Non-Profit Partner booth from 2010Looking to raise some funds for your organization? How about at our fun, cultural festival during one summer weekend!

CDBF is currently accepting applications for our 2011 Non-Profit Partners Program.

This program is an opportunity for the festival to give back to the community by having non-profit 501c3 organizations run the concession and merchandise booths during our 2011 festival. Organizations receive a percentage of sales by running the festival's beer garden, Pepsi booths, merchandise tables.... and making snow cones!

You can apply as a 2011 Non-Profit Partner online.

Design contest deadline extended to May 15!
CDBF 2010 Community Design

If you're an artist or graphic designer, or know someone who is, there's still time to submit your cool design: We've extended the deadline for the Fourth Annual Community Design Competition through May 15!

We're already receiving some creative entries, and we want to see yours too. We want cool designs that capture the excitement and cultural richness of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival for 2011.

The winning design could be used in promotional material like t-shirts and other merchandise, or a poster. The image shown here is a detail from last year's beautiful illustration by Evergreen artist Laurie Romberg, which the judges chose as the winner. Oh yes, and the top winners receive cash prizes!

If you have a creative eye (and the dragon's spirit) and want a shot at the prize money, read more and submit your design online

Join DRACO for dragon boat race practices!

DRACO

Standley Lake in Arvada, where the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival stores its four dragon boats, opened for the boating season on May 1.

That means the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado, DRACO, will be taking CDBF's boats onto the water after spending the winter months training at the Wheat Ridge Rec Center using our specially-designed dragon boat simulator.

If you have a hankering to paddle all year long even when the festival's not going on, join DRACO. The association even sends teams to competitive dragon boat races across the country.

Read all about DRACO membership and learn how to join this group and help dragon boat racing become an established sport in Colorado! Send an email to DRACO@cdbf.org to ask about practice times on Standley Lake!

Help save Connor -- and other Asians
Help save Connor -- register as a bone marrow donor
Connor Lim doesn't live in Denver. But he and his family need your help. He has X-linked Hyper IgM Syndrome, a fatal immuno-deficiency disease. The only known cure is a bone marrow transplant. He will most likely find a donor from the Asian Pacific Islander community, especially Koreans.

The problem is, Asians have a very low rate of registrations as bone marrow donors. If you can't help Connor, you may be able to help another Asian American or Pacific Islander who needs a bone marrow transplant. The need is dire, and registering is easy.

Please help. Visit the Lim family's website, www.savingconnor.com, and learn how you can register to save a life. It may be Connor's.
