The first half of the day focuses on performing arts or "3D storytelling." Explore the world of theater by jumping into the art of acting. Through a series of games and dramatic exercises, campers will develop storytelling skills and create characters and scenes to present to a live audience at the end of camp. Campers will explore the tools of the actor including voice, movement, imagination and a willingness to play. Learning to communicate and collaborate within a group enhances life skills that apply to relationships, classes and careers of the future. The second part of the day introduces students to visual art, where students will learn new ways to create unique work, as well as traditional skills such as drawing, painting and pottery. Using the indoor and outdoor art facilities at The White Mountain School, students will explore a variety of mediums and techniques. Students will be encouraged to think outside the box in this non-competitive and fun environment, and can choose one part of the day or participate in both. Tuesday, July 10, 1:30-5pm and Wednesday, July 11, 10am-1:30pm - Oil Painting for Beginners and Intermediate Depending on the weather and class preference, the class will be painting outdoors or indoors with mentor Nancy Griswold. This two-day program will teach an immediate and direct approach to oil painting using Alla Prima methods. Alla Prima is a technique in which the work is completed before the first layer of paint dries and is characteristic of impressionist style of painting. Students will learn how to build an oil painting within 2-6 hours. Students will produce one small oil painting. For adults and youth ages 15+. Contact Rey Center for materials list and to register. The day will consist of fun games, interactive demonstrations, and hands on activities like making and using Star Wheels, making a paper sundial, identifying stars and constellations on a celestial scavenger hunt, and building and launching rockets. Thursday, July 12, 8-9:30pm - Nature Night Walks: Sounds of the Night Join the Rey Center to explore the sights, sounds and creatures of the night. Exhibiting through July 10 - Dunia Moja/One World This exhibit is the result of a print making exchange between artists from the Peregrine Press in Portland, ME and artists from Women Networking in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Each group of artists created a base print. The Peregrine artists sent their base prints to the artists in Zanzibar and vice versa. Each group then added to the original print they had received. The result is a colorful and engaging body of work combining the talents and cultures of artists who live and work in two entirely different hemispheres. This survey includes documentary research into the property's history, a walk over survey of the property by Forest Service heritage program staff, and limited archaeological test excavations. Sara Jordon, Historical Archaeologist at the WMNF will trace the early ownership of the property, focusing on the Blair Hotel, an adjacent early 19th century cemetery, and the Blair family, including their relationships with local 19th century figures such as Senator William Henry Blair, Judges Samuel and Arthur Livermore, and Lucia and Marian Pychowska of the AMC.
