Register for Traditional Arts Conference: Traditional artists in all media -- craftspeople, musicians, dancers, etc. -- have a unique opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and build a stronger community at the Traditional Arts Conference offered by the NH State Council on the Arts. The conference is being held from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, June 9 at the McLane Center at the NH Audubon Society, 84 Silk Farm Road, Concord. Barry Bergey, director of the Folk Arts Program at the National Endowment for the Arts, will open the conference. There is no charge for the conference but space limitations require everyone to preregister by Friday, June 1. Shaping Our Heritage Exhibit Celebrates Traditional Arts Apprenticeships: Shaping Our Heritage is an opportunity to learn more about the important craft, music and dance traditions being preserved by talented artists in New Hampshire. The exhibit features artwork by Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant master artists and apprentices, and photographs of artists in their workshops and communities. Save the dates -- October 19 & 20 -- for NH's annual Arts in Education conference! Mark your calendars for "Opening Minds to the Arts, Investing in Arts Education for a New Generation," the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts' annual, statewide Arts in Education Partnership Conference, which will be held in Lebanon, NH, this year. Conference keynote will be Sandra Ruppert, Director of the National Arts Education Partnership. The conference focus will be on best practices, new research and strategies for building a network ifor arts learning, and creativity and innovation opportunities for all students and youth. Workshop RFPs and registration materials will be posted in June.

Upcoming Arts Alliance and Partner Programs

Today through Friday! Inflatable Sculpture Project with Kennett High Art Students: Intermedia artist C.M. Judge has spent the past three days as Artist in Residence at Kennett High School through a partnership with the Arts Alliance. She has been working on a collaborative inflatable sculpture project with Art 2 students and their teacher Sandy Hall. Weather permitting, the public is invited to view -- and walk through -- the sculpture they have produced, today, Wednesday, May 23, from 1:30 to 2:30pm and from 9am to 2pm on May 24 and 25, we. C.M. Judge's video installations, drawings, paintings and multimedia works have been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. Her educational mission is to empower young people to express their spirited common goodness through art by creating public art for their communities. TONIGHT! Errol Consolidated School Celebrates Music and Art: Community members are invited to an evening of music and art beginning at 6pm Wednesday, May 23 at the Errol Town Hall. Students at the Errol Consolidated School will perform with mentor Patrick Ross, who has been working with them for the past several months, teaching them how to play a variety of instruments. "Sound Medicine: Music for Healing and Comfort" Workshops in Berlin and Colebrook: We're pleased to partner once again with Concord Hospital's Professional Practice and Development and Therapeutic Arts and Activities Services in presenting "Sound Medicine: Music for Healing and Comfort" workshops. If you are a health-care professional -- physician, nurse, administrator -- or a hospice worker, volunteer or musician interested in learning about how live therapeutic music helps ease the challenges of illness and hospitalization, please join us on Tuesday, May 29, at 12noon in the Lecture Room at Androscoggin Valley Hospital, Berlin, or at 7pm in the Conference Room, Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Colebrook as Alice Kinsler, Manager of Concord Hospital's Therapeutic Arts & Activity Services, and Certified Music Practitioner Emily Mills share their experience. The workshop is approved for 1 Nursing Contact Hour. Layers of Learning Workshops Connect Teaching Artists with Schools: Teaching artists in all disciplines -- and at all levels of experience -- are invited to a workshop designed to help them connect more effectively with schools, addressing their artistic goals while taking into account schools' needs and requirements. The workshop, led by teaching eco artist Cynthia Robinson, is presented in partnership with the New England Consortium of Artist-Educators and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and is being offered May 30 at Sanctuary Arts, Eliot, Maine. Using Facebook Well: This hands-on workshop is specifically geared towards cultural and heritage organizations and creative businesses. If your organization or business already has a Facebook business page, but you feel like you're not using it to its full potential, this workshop is for you! Christine Halvorson, the social media strategist at Louis Karno & Company Communications in Concord, will walk you through a series of "best practices" for a Facebook business page, including how to get the most out of the new design, the types of content most likely to be shared, when to post, using your time efficiently and other strategies. Bring your laptop for a few hands-on exercises and be ready to get your questions answered. The workshop will be held on Friday, June 8, from 10:30am-12noon at Rivergreen Resort, Lincoln. Weeks Act Legacy Trail Offers a New Tour of the White Mountains by Car, Computer or Phone: The Weeks Act Legacy Trail is a new, self-guided tour of the White Mountains; you can check it out at www.weekslegacy.org. Helping travelers along the way are an audio tour and print tour as well as an online virtual tour and mobile tour customized for smart phones. Named after The Weeks Act, the watershed conservation legislation of 1911 that led to the creation of the National Forest System, the tour spans 100 miles and stops at 40 signature White Mountain destinations, categorized by eight themes: Art and Literature, Conservation History, Ecology and Nature, History and Cultural Heritage, Kids and Families, Recreation, Scenery and Photographic Opportunities and Water. Each site is fun to visit on its own; together, they contribute to a meaningful understanding of the past, present and potential future of these protected lands The Arts Alliance is proud to be part of the planning team -- let us know what you think about the tour!

Monday, May 28, 7pm - GNWCA presents The Forge, featuring Scottish harpist/vocalist Maeve Gilchrist. Irish music quartette The Forge will be appearing at the Colebrook Country Club. Maeve Gilchrist, Anna Colliton, Cara Frankowicz and Nicole Rabata have been called North America's most powerful new traditional Irish music group. May 26 - Seasons of the White Mountains
Take a visual journey along trails, brooks and beautiful vistas of the White Mountains through each season of the year. Join Dave Smith for his two part program. "History of the White Mountain" chronicles three popular historical stories, The legend of Mt Chocorua, Darby Field and the Willey Family. These three subjects are at the beginning in the middle and at the end of the presentation, and in between Smith will add other historical events that took place in the time of the early settlers in New Hampshire. Sunday, May 27 - Tales from the Trail
Approximately 2,000 people a year attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail, and only 10% (150-200) who start make it the whole way. Join AMC Volunteer Pete Lane for a presentation on his 2001-2002 Appalachian Trail hike.
All programs are free and open to the public; fee for dinners. The family-style dinner is at 6pm; reservations are recommended; guests may BYOB. Call for more information or to make a reservation. This schedule is subject to change.

Gorham Historical Society & Railroad Museum

Explore the rich history of the town, the area and the railroad through artifacts, photographs, railroad exhibits and equipment, including Baldwin steam engine, B&M diesel engine, Russell snowplow and caboose. Museum located within a 1907 Grand Trunk Railway station (used as station until 1968), with a model railroad and unique Crockett-Quinn GTR Railroadania exhibit in railroad boxcars. Admission is by donation. Directions: Route 2 and 16 into Gorham (Main Street). Railroad Street is one block south of Main Street and the town common, near the Town Hall.

Local, regional and internationally acclaimed artists fill the stage with a revolving repertoire of shows selected to celebrate the arts, creativity and local cultural heritage. Art exhibits are open for viewing during regular business hours, an hour before all performing arts programs, and by special arrangement. There is no admission fee but donations to support the exhibit series are most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Featuring a three-acre site with waterfront access and walkways, a full-size circa-1900 replica logging camp, interactive exhibits and the Brown Company House Museum, built in 1853 by the H.W. Winslow Company as a boarding house for its saw mill employees. Self-guided Logging Camp Tours. NFHP offers group charter rates for boat tours and Logging Camp/Museum tours. Volunteers are always needed and warmly welcomed. The Bunkhouse and Cookhouse are available for various functions, whether it be a wedding, bridal/baby shower, birthday party, retirement party, company picnic or whatever-you-can-imagine party. Visit the colorful Heritage Gardens - Stop by and browse through the Gardens for photo opportunities or just to relax. The restoration of the historic gardens and enhancement of the entrance to the Logging Camp Interpretive Center with colorful inviting gardens has been the Heritage Garden Club's focus.Anyone who has some time and an interest in gardening can call the Park to volunteer.
Sunday, June 3 - Cultural/Heritage Festival
A full day of festivities for all ages, centered on cultural foods from Canadian, German, Irish, Italian, Native American, Norwegian, Russian and Scandinavian heritages. Chefs from local restaurants, along with volunteers, will prepare foods from all of the various cultures. Two great performers, Tim Dion and Patrick Ross will provide the entertainment. Awesome antique cars will be presented by North Country Classics Car Club. There will be artisans, crafts, farmers market and more. There is no admission fee to walk through the Park. The New Hampshire Writers' Project Writers' Night Out is a first-Monday-of-the-month gathering of writers in a warm and social setting. This isn't a reading... it is writers discussing what they are working on, what's new in the publishing world, books they have read, and more. No need to RSVP, just stop by this free gathering, held in the Cookhouse. One does not have to be a member of the Writers' Project to attend. Saturday, June 16, 9am - River Day Festival & WINGZILLA
Bring family and friends for a day-long celebration on the banks of the Androscoggin River. There will be a "Family Fun Float" and all are invited to show their ingenious floating creations and float down the river from Nansen Wayside to the Park. There will also be a Canoe/Kayak race. Children's activities include games, farm animals, arts & crafts, log rolling, metal fishing contests and face painting. Additionally, there will be several environmental science exhibits. In conjunction with River Day, WINGZILLA is an all-day fun occasion, including a Barbeque Chicken Wing Cook-Off Competition and "Luck of the Draw" Horseshoe Tournament. Free admission to the park. Judge will spend a three-day Artist in Residence program at Kennett High School, developed through a partnership with the Arts Alliance, during which she will be working on a collaborative inflatable sculpture project with Art 2 students and their teacher Sandy Hall. Judge's video installations, drawings, paintings and multimedia works have been exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad. Lisbon Area Historical Society meets every other month at the Lisbon Historic Railroad Station and Museum (25 Central Street) at 6:30pm. The public is welcome to attend meetings.
The Society's museum in the Pickwick-Clough Room of the Lisbon Public Library is open by appointment and houses a collection of artifacts, correspondence, photographs and genealogy from the early settlers to present day. In addition, the Society continues to display in the Railroad Station a rotating exhibit of interesting historical items from the Society's collections. A unique and distinctive architectural structure built circa 1870 by the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad, this historic station was completely renovated in 2008.

Exhibiting May 26-July 1 - Impressions of Africa
This exhibit includes African art, portraying the diversity of color, style and expression found in African life, culture and environment. Included in the exhibit are paintings by two Tanzanian artists Riziki Kateya and Robert Aswani, African wildlife photography by local photographer Willey Peckham, and photos & paintings of the people and music of Ghana by local artist Dave Kobrenski. Proceeds support the Rey Center's art and science education programs. This unique exhibit is made possible because of the Center's collaboration with another nonprofit, Routes to Africa. Many varied and exciting prizes will be available, including a private gourmet Chinese dinner for up to 24, a scenic flight across the Lakes Region for two, and the exclusive chance for the NH Master Chorale to perform at the top bidder's holiday party. Another unique prize is a "portrait" song written specifically for the top bidder or their loved one. Composer-in-Residence, Dr. Jonathan Santore, will create a composition capturing the spirit of the portrait subject and the winner will receive a printed copy and recording of the work. The Wine Tasting event will also feature the drawing for the ongoing raffle, which includes an iPad, Boston Red Sox tickets, and gift certificates to Hannaford and to one's choice of an advertiser in NHMC's concert program.
There will be light refreshments, as well as live music by The 9's. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the New Hampshire Master Chorale's 10th performance season, beginning in fall 2012. Tickets can be purchased online at the website, at Chase St. Market in Plymouth, or from an NHMC board member. Due to capacity restrictions, only 175 tickets will be sold. You must be 21 to attend.
