Take the Creative Concord Online Survey! The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce and the leaders of its Creative Concord initiative are studying the potential of developing affordable live/work space to support the growing creative sector in the city. Meet Our New Assistant Director: We are very pleased to welcome Laura Thibault as the Arts Alliance's new Assistant Director. A native of New Hampshire and graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Laura joins us with a strong background in nonprofit management. A resident of Thornton, she most recently worked as an independent nonprofit consultant and previously served as Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire from 2002-2007. We look forward to introducing Laura to our members and partners in the months ahead.

Arts in Health Care Project Grants Deadline November 19: Please contact us this week if you are interested in being part of the Arts Alliance's next Arts in Health Care Project grant application. Grants support arts activities, artist residencies and arts training programs that occur in health care facilities, nursing homes and centers serving the elderly. Facilities may also apply directly to the NH State Council on the Arts. The deadline is November 19. Learn more here.

IMAI Brings Adymus Trio to Lancaster Sunday, November 21: We're glad to join the International Musical Arts Institute in presenting the Adymus Trio performing works of Bach, Chausson and Mendelssohn at 2pm, Sunday, November 21, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lancaster. The program is part of the Northward Bound series, which brings world-class chamber music to the North Country throughout the year. Taiwanese-born violinist Li-Ling Liao and Canadian cellist Brian Mix both live in Vancouver, while pianist Timothy Bozarth lives in Boston. The trio is performing in the Northeast prior to its first tour of Taiwan in December. The suggested donation is $10. Call 323-7302 or email info@aannh.org for additional information.

You're Invited to "Songs and Singing Games" December 4 in Plymouth: Join us on Saturday, December 4, from 9am to noon, as Deborah Stuart leads Songs and Singing Games: Learning Language through Music and Movement, a workshop that explores the rich repertoire of early-childhood music, rhymes, counting-out chants, finger plays and traditional circle and playground games. The workshop, part of the Arts Alliance's Arts in Early Learning collaboration with VSA New Hampshire, is designed for pre-school and early-elementary teachers, children's librarians, child-care providers, parents and community program leaders. Participants will learn by doing, exploring the links between music and language, self-expression and literacy skills, and will take back to their children many new ways to introduce rhythm and music into daily activities. Singing games are also an effective tool for social learning and offer children ways to use these traditional rhymes and games on their own, at school and at home, with their friends and families. Information about recordings, song sheets and resource lists will be made available so that all the material can be used immediately. Cost for the program is $20 for the first participant from a school or site, $10 for additional participants or for students. Scholarships are available. Location and registration information will be posted on our website later this week.

Plymouth State's Annual Integrated Arts Conference Set for January 29: Presented in association with the Arts Alliance and the NH State Council on the Arts, the 16th Annual Integrated Arts Conference will be held on Saturday, January 29, from 8am-4pm, at Silver Center for the Arts, Plymouth State University. The conference, for elementary and secondary school teachers, offers professional development and continuing education workshops. Arts educators and artists learn how to integrate visual art, music, drama and writing into their curriculum, based on the theme of this year's production, Peter Pan. Save the Date for Our Annual "Write Now!" Conference: Our annual "Write Now!" conference is set for April 9, 2011, at Kennett High School, North Conway. Presented in partnership with SAU 9 and dedicated to the memory and legacy of Don Graves, the conference features nationally known author and writing consultant Lester Laminack. Lester, a full-time writer and consultant working with schools throughout the United States, is Professor Emeritus at Western Carolina University. His publications include academic books such as Learning with Zachary (Scholastic) and Volunteers Working with Young Readers (NCTE), and his latest book from Heinemann, Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature: Making the Most of Read-Alouds Across the Day. Lester is also the author of five children's books. The conference is free to SAU9 educators, parents and community members; early-bird registration (before January 31, 2011) for other participants is $50, $40 for Arts Alliance members. The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a grass-roots group of oil, watercolor and acrylic artists from Pittsburg, Colebrook, West Stewartstown, northern VT and Coaticook, PQ. Its mission is to promote the visual arts and provide support to new and established artists. Various workshops offered every month - check website or call for details.
Artist of the Month at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital (UCVH) and at the Coos County Nursing Hospital (CCNH): Hans Klunder at UCVH and JoAnn Boydson at CCNH. Interpretive Center's Artist of the Month for November are Patty and Harry Moulton. CRAG members also exhibit at Fiddleheads in Colebrook, featuring a themed art exhibit each month.

Sunday, November 14, 7pm - Theremin Concert with Kevin Colosa
Although most people have never heard of a theremin, many people are familiar with its eerie sound. This is a rare opportunity to experience this unique instrument, which is the only instrument played without physical contact. Colosa will be performing a number of classical selections, as well as an original composition, and will be accompanied on piano by Sharon Pearson of Colebrook. Adults are encouraged to bring children, who will find Colosa's performance particularly interesting. Kevin plans to take questions from the audience at the end of the concert and explain how the theremin works. Held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Bridge Street in Colebrook. Advance tickets will be available at Fiddleheads on Main Street in Colebrook, as well as at the door on the night of the performance.

George Frederick Handel's Messiah (the Christmas section) is coming to Colebrook and the public is invited to be a part of it. The North Country Ecumenical Chorus will be performing this classic, with several parts performed by accomplished soloists. The chorus will be performing six very familiar pieces; singers of all ages, veterans or novices can join the chorus. No audition will be held. All rehearsals and the concert will be held at the Monadnock Congregational Church. The first rehearsal will be on Saturday, November 20, from 6:30-8pm. Three other rehearsals will be from 6:30-8pm on consecutive Sundays, November 28, December 5 and December 12. The performance will be on Sunday, December 19. The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty, is a Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera in two acts. Frederick was to be apprenticed to a pilot, but due to a hard-of-hearing nurserymaid, was instead apprenticed to a pirate. Not just any pirate, but the Pirate King, leader of the not-so-fierce "Pirates of Penzance." But now his indentures are over, Frederick's sense of duty calls him to rid the seas of these rather simple ruffians. Despite their track record, the pirates believe that they have an ace up their collective sleeves.

Local, regional and internationally acclaimed artists fill the stage with a revolving repertoire of shows selected to celebrate the arts, creativity and local cultural heritage. Art exhibits are open for viewing during regular business hours Monday-Friday, an hour before all performing arts programs, and by special arrangement. There is no admission fee but donations to support the exhibit series are most welcome and greatly appreciated. St. Kieran Arts Center is hosting a new Quilt Raffle to raise funds for 2010 arts events thanks to the generous donation of a queen-size quilt made by members of the Berlin Quilters Guild. The drawing will be held at the Berlin Jazz Concert.

These two-hour sightseeing bus tours provide an opportunity to explore this northernmost City of NH and learn some history. The tour encompasses historically significant locations such as Mount Jasper, a mine and quarries worked by prehistoric New England Native Americans dating back 7,000 years, the world renowned Brown Company Research & Development Buildings, the Russian Church, and ethnic neighborhoods of Berlin. Local historian Paul "Poof" Tardiff will give details of how the various cultures that settled this city in the late 1800s and early 1900s helped develop its growth during the boom years.

First known as Shelburne Addition, the town was later named Gorham. Explore the rich history of the town, the area and the railroad through artifacts, photographs, railroad exhibits and equipment and more. Museum located within a 1907 Grand Trunk Railway station, with a model railroad and Railroadania steam era exhibits in boxcars. Most of the museum and several box cars are handicapped accessible. Enjoy some good food, a warm fire, country crafts, and a healthy dose of history at Historic Thanksgiving. For the young ones, all day craft-making, including pine-cone turkeys. Thanksgiving exhibits, explore the Museum, visit all of the farm animals or hop on the horse-drawn wagon ride with Belgian horses, Lady and Brandi. The museum interpreters will prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal on the open hearth using historic recipes. The menu for Historic Thanksgiving includes roasted turkey, bread sauce stuffing-dressing, hearth bread and butter, boiled cider pie, Indian pudding, cranberry sauce and pumpkin stuffed with apples. The Rey Foundation and The Community School serve hot lunches at The Community School, available to community members on a voluntary donation basis. One of the target groups for these lunches is young mothers and children. In order to provide an additional appeal to this group, the Rey Foundation will offer Chalk Talk drawing and storytelling sessions during and after lunch, from 12:30-1:30pm.
The Farmer's Table uses the Community School's licensed kitchen and the bounty from its certified organic farm and many local farmers to benefit those in the Bearcamp Valley looking to supplement their weekly food budget with a healthy, balanced meal. In addition, the project will eventually provide classes on cooking and preserving home-grown food, practices which are becoming lost in modern culture. An email or phone call is appreciated so that enough food can be made for all.

Light, shadow, mood and other variables affect how painters put color on canvas. Students will study the properties of particular colors, decipher their compositions, and learn to recreate them on their palettes. A limited numbers of essential tube colors can be mixed into most colors of the total spectrum. By exploring color theory, create and modify color combinations to match the intended motifs.

A 1798 grist mill complex and basic mill workings restored to its original architecture. Experience 200-year-old state-of-the-art grinding of grain, four-foot millstones, wooden gears and a 20-foot waterwheel. The energy to power the mills was supplied by the Ammonoosuc River. Although the dam no longer exists, the original grist mill still stands and is restored to its original appearance. Thought to be the oldest commercial building north of Concord, the Grist Mill produces its own organically grown, stone-ground flours and mixes. Free tours, artifacts, gift gallery.

The NE Ski Museum recently opened a new exhibition, Five Rings, Six States: New England Skiers in the Winter Olympics, that profiles the contributions of many Winter Olympians from the region in every Olympiad from 1924 through this year's Vancouver Games. The exhibit will be on view through the end of March, 2011. The Museum has all five of Bode Miller's Olympic medals (Salt Lake' 02 & Vancouver '10) and three of his Torino '06 bibs on display, for a limited time. Admission is free.
The Museum also maintains satellite exhibits within Zimmerman's Mountain Sports in the lobby of the Eastern Slope Inn in downtown North Conway, and at Bretton Woods Mountain Resort.

Louisa May Alcott's timeless story of the March sisters comes to the stage as an exhilarating musical filled with glorious music and heart as it captures the struggle, romance and deep emotions of Alcott's tale. Held at Studio Theatre.
November 14, 15, 16 & 18 - Theatre Auditions and Callbacks: Educational Theatre Collaborative for its production of Peter Pan. Rehearsals will take place throughout January, and performance dates are January 26-29, in Hanaway Theatre. ETC seeks strong dancers of all ages to portray the Indians, great character actors for pirates (both male and female), and 20-25 "lost boys" (who may be portrayed by girls if they are comfortable playing boys). Ages 8 to 80. The annual festival features the PSU Symphonic Band and 175 high school musicians. Concert concludes a daylong event involving honor band members from 65 high schools and the six New England states. Monday, November 15, 7:30pm - Program: New Hampshire Old Home Day Celebrations
Learn about the history of Old Home Celebrations from the first ones established in 1899 through the present day. This program by Gary Crooker will examine the origins of the homegrown holiday, as a means to get former residents to return to and invest in their native state, and how communities have celebrated in their towns. Mr. Crooker will also speak about the making of his book New Hampshire Old Home Celebrations and some of his collection of Old Home Day memorabilia which will be on display. Note: This is also the Society's annual meeting with a quick summary of the past and the election of new officers. Anyone interested in serving on the board can contact Judy Landry at (603) 726-3081. Exhibiting through December 5 at the Silver Center for the Arts - Old Wives Tales: What Women Know
Women's Caucus for Art - New Hampshire juried exhibition presents a juried exhibition that includes a wide range of approaches to the theme of women's knowledge, knowledge that is passed through the generations, from woman to woman, or gained through experience. Not limited to old wives, this exhibition provides a forum for each artist to bring her own unique perspective and response to the title of the exhibition.

An important connection between faculty and students occurs when faculty exhibit their own work. This annual exhibition presents an opportunity for students and members of the PSU community to become better acquainted with art department faculty outside the classroom, as artists working in a variety of media. Faculty welcome viewers into the private realm of the teacher as artist.
Exhibiting through December 22 at Lamson Library - W.D.'s Midnight Carnival
A collaboration between poet and painter - a collection of 10 poems by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass, and 10 vibrant etchings by artist DeLoss McGraw. This collaboration began in 1976, when McGraw discovered Snodgrass's poetry. The artist sent the poet a series of mixed-media paintings that incorporated the poet's text into their composition. Snodgrass, in turn, responded with new poems inspired by these images, and thus occurred a melding of media and ideas between the artists, illustrating how the artist and poet inspire each other's work, rather than simply describing it with images and words. Lamson Library and Learning Commons is located on Highland Street in Plymouth. The display is on the main level, and hours are posted at http://library.plymouth.edu/hours.

Art Parties at Artistic Roots - Celebrate a child's birthday with an art workshop designed from his/her wishes, ideas and themes. The 1½ hour party workshops are available on weekends year round. Tuesday & Thursday, November 16 & 18, 6-9pm - Kiln Fired Glass with Lynn Haust
This fast-paced class will give students a chance to explore kiln fired glass and many of the techniques that make melting glass so exciting. Create several pendants and one pair of earrings, working with clear and black dichroic glass. In the first class, students will fuse the glass into one large block and then cut and shaping the glass in the second class. The glass will then be re-fired to fire polish and melt the glass into the finished pendant. Glass technology, safety, cutting glass, equipment, resources and creative directions will be covered. Detailed information and a resource packet will be provided. Class minimum: 4 maximum: 8. Ages 15 and up
Thursday & Friday, November 18 & 19, 9-11am - Intro to Multi-Plate Printing with Alma Grand
This class will be taught using Annette Mitchell's original foam-plate print-making technique. Alma will share some of her work, demonstrating the technique, and assisting those taking the class to produce their own original pieces. All materials are included.
Saturday, November 20, 9am-12noon - Simple Bookbinding with Kristine Lingle
Students will learn to construct simple sewn pamphlet books and accordion books with decorative covers and embellishments. These books can be used as travel or nature journals, photo albums or visual journaling. They also make lovely holiday gifts, left blank or filled with photos. No previous experience necessary. All materials will be provided.
Saturday, November 20, 1-4pm - Introduction to Collage with Kristine Lingle
Students will explore a variety of media and techniques, including glazes and washes, image transfers and resists, stenciling, stamping, altered images, painting and collage to create expressive, intuitive art. No previous experience necessary.
Mondays, through December 13, 5:30-8:30pm - Monday Evening Watercolor
These watercolor sessions with Cheryl Johnson for advanced beginner and intermediate painters will focus on applying various types of washes, brush work, developing values, portraying light and shadow, use of additives and color mixing. Library Temporary Closure/Relocation: Last day of regular operation at Russell Street will be Friday, December 3. On Saturday, December 11, an Open House at the temporary library location will be held - at the Daniel Webster Courthouse on Court Street, now serving as the Plymouth Historical Society's Museum. Library hours at the Courthouse location begin December 13: Monday & Wednesday, 10am-12noon and Tuesday & Thursday, 3-5pm.The upper level of the Library is scheduled to reopen the beginning of February. At the same time, the lower level will become unavailable until early April, while it is renovated and the new community room is completed.
A fraction of the current collection will be moved to the temporary library. Computer services will be unavailable at the temporary library. There are public computers at the Whole Village and at Lamson Library at PSU and they will welcome Pease patrons.

Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. Mary Hays will lead a discussion on this book which identifies family secrets from Nazi Germany, with the narrative alternating between wartime Germany and the present.
