Our New Salon Series: We’ve always known that our region is full of fascinating people living quietly and doing interesting and creative work, and we’ve decided to invite some of them to share that work with us – and you. "Meet Your Neighbors: A Salon Series" is a new Arts Alliance program dedicated to that sharing. It begins in early August, when Landaff resident and former Plymouth State University president Don Wharton reads and discusses prose sketches that come from his observations and insights into the rhythms of life in his community, including friends, neighbors, wildlife, the woods and fields, and the seasons. Watch for exact date, time and place.

Early-Bird Registration for Field of Vision Conference: Once again the Arts Alliance will serve as coordinating partner for the NH State Council on the Arts' annual Statewide Arts in Education Conference, October 22-24 at the AMC Highland Center, Crawford Notch. Keynote speaker is researcher James Catterall, Professor of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and co-author of "Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Social and Academic Development." The conference offers inspiring presentations, workshops, resources and networking opportunities for artists, educators and community supporters of arts in education. Visit our website for an early-bird registration form and AMC lodging information.

Promoting, Supporting and Sustaining
Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

The festivities of the 4th of July weekend, followed by last week's hot and humid weather, leave no doubt that summer is truly here. After a dip in the lake, browse through the hundreds of listings in this calendar for some cool ideas of things to do and see: take in a theater opening, listen to a talk or some tunes under the stars, or check out the beautiful crafts offered at our arts festivals and markets.

Bulletin instructions: If this e-bulletin comes through for you as one long text message, click on the Arts Alliance website at www.aannh.org for the user-friendly version. Choose "Join our e-list" in the left-hand column, then enter your email address. You will receive an email from the Arts Alliance. Click to update your Profile. At the bottom of the Profile page, select HTML format. Save your changes. That should solve the problem and allow you to view the bulletin more easily.

The bulletin, for you and your guests, is arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm details and hours prior to attending events or visiting sites. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details; a link is available in the Quick Links section.

Please note that Arts Alliance member organizations are indicated with our member icon and a live link to their websites. We appreciate our members, and encourage you to attend their events.

If your organization is presenting a cultural event, email details to us as early as possible at events@aannh.org and we'll include it in our online calendar and our email bulletins. You can simply add events@aannh.org to your press list. Please take the time to review your listing, both in the bulletin and the online calendar, and forward corrections to events@aannh.org. Note: Our bulletin schedule has been revised for the busy summer season: You can find the schedule for deadlines for bulletins in the left-hand column of this bulletin or at http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfn3jwsj_9dbbxzpgg.

The submission deadline for the next bulletin,
covering July 29-August 11, is July 20.

Assistant Director Job Opening at the Arts Alliance: We're truly sad to lose Eileen Alexander as our Assistant Director, but very happy that she'll be staying on as Special Projects Coordinator. This change means we're now hiring a new full-time Assistant Director. We're looking for someone dedicated, experienced, efficient, energetic, tech-savvy - and passionate about arts, culture, rural issues and the North Country. Click here or visit our home page to read the job description, and please spread the word to colleagues and friends. The application deadline is July 31.

On Stage in the White Mountains: Northern New Hampshire is bursting with first-class arts events at this time of year. Check out our rack-card guide to the performing arts, with listings for 25 Arts Alliance member organizations. To help you find them and learn more about them, have a look at our first Google map (there will be more!). You can pick up a rack card - perfect for your fridge or to give to visitors - at member sites, at state rest areas, the Granite State Ambassador desk at the Manchester airport, and at lodging properties, local information booths, and other community sites. Suggestions for good distribution points are welcome, and please let us know if you'd like some to hand out at your business or organization. (Send an email to info@aannh.org or call us at (603) 323-7302.)

July 20-24 - The Miser
This 1668 farce offers romance, intrigue, drama and abundant laughs. And despite being a broad comedy from the 17th century, it seems quite timely and topical, given all that's happening with the stock market and the preoccupation with money.
July 27-31 - Almost Maine
A collection of funny, surreal vignettes set on a cold, starry night in winter, the play documents an interior landscape of love and longing as quirky as the mythical town of Almost, and addresses the perennial question that outsiders have about small New England towns - "What do you do all winter?"

The connected farmstead organization, housing equal parts mixed-farming and home-industry, was one of the collective responses to the competitive threat.
