Promoting, Supporting and Sustaining
Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

The days are warm, the nights are crisp, and the leaves are turning -- time to take some photos and enjoy some of the many fall events around the region. We're pleased to present our ArtsNorth e-bulletin for you and your guests, arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm details and hours prior to attending events or visiting sites. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details, and find events beyond the dates in this bulletin in our Plan-Ahead Arts Calendar. Links to both calendars are available in the Quick Links section. Please note that Arts Alliance member organizations are indicated with our member icon. We appreciate our members, and encourage you to attend their events -- and invite you, too, to join us as an individual, artist, family, business, school or institutional member (see http://aannh.org/membership.php for membership information). You can purchase or renew your membership online.

If your organization is presenting a cultural event, email details to us as early as possible at events@aannh.org and we'll include it in our online calendar and our email bulletins. You can simply add events@aannh.org to your press list. Please take the time to review your listing, both in the bulletin and the online calendar, and forward corrections to events@aannh.org.

The submission deadline for the next bulletin,
covering October 22-November 11, is October 13.

Among the almost two dozen Arts Alliance partner workshops are: From the Page to the Stage; The Power of Underpants: Writing with Kids; The Joys of Arts Integration; From Cartoons to Comics: Classroom Practices to Stimulate Stories, Fun, Hard Work & Learning; African Dance for Absolute Beginners; Pictures of Words: Painting and Drawing with Chinese Characters; Plein-air Painting; "Underwater World": Exploring Ponds, Rivers and Oceans; Literacy through Movement; and Try the Guitar! For full conference information, go to http://ncedservices.org/documents/2009_ncpdd.pdf.

"The Art of Conservation" Extended Through October 6: We're pleased to report that the exhibit and sale of original oil paintings to benefit the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust (ACT) at the Sunset Hill House, Sugar Hill, is extended through October 6. "The Art of Conservation" is a partnership between ACT and the Banks Gallery of New London and Portsmouth, in collaboration with the Arts Alliance. Participating artists, including local artists Mary Ellen Russell, Paula Wolcott, Dianne Taylor Moore, Kristine Lingle and Nancy Cole, have produced about 40 paintings of and from conservation properties, as well as favorite landscapes and intimate views of gardens and other picturesque spots. For details, visit www.theartofconservation.org.

Arts & Health Series Continues with Drummer Michael Wingfield: We continue our Arts & Health for Seniors program with a week-long residency with Afro-Caribbean drummer Michael Wingfield. Michael will visit senior centers, nursing homes, assisted living sites and other venues throughout the region, offering programs for seniors, staff, caregivers, volunteers and family members, as well as intergenerational performances. Michael uses conga drums, cowbells and other instruments to engage his audience -- in presentations for seniors and their families; in hands-on workshops that use music and rhythm to help the elderly reconnect with their own musical memories; and in trainings in which caregivers interpret the challenges they face through drumming, song and movement and learn to use simple percussion techniques in their work with the elderly. Call us at 323-7302 or 837-2275 or email info@aannh.org if you are interested in having Michael visit your facility or if you would like to attend a program or learn more about the project. Arts & Health for Seniors is funded in part by a grant from the NH State Council on the Arts' Arts in Health Care program.

"An Exploration of Arts, Culture & Politics" Humanities Seminar: Filmmaker James Tusty and scholar Barbara Baudot will offer a free humanities seminar for educators and community members on Friday, October 30, from 3:30 to 5:30pm at North Country Education Services, 300 Gorham Hill Road (Route 2), Gorham. The seminar will examine the intersection of arts, culture and politics, using James Tusty's documentary The Singing Revolution, which tells the little known story of how Estonians freed themselves from decades of Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Dr. Baudot will provide an overview of the topic, considering the power of poetry, literature, music, architecture and visual arts to stimulate the imagination and creativity of political actors and citizens in their pursuit of peace and social justice and providing insight into the ways in which this subject has been addressed by political philosophers over time. The seminar is a joint collaboration of NCES, the Arts Alliance and the NH State Council on the Arts' Statewide Arts in Education Partnership Conference, and is funded by the NH Humanities Council. Preregistration is requested; you can download the registration form at our website.

Baked beans, Indian pudding, fried clams and lobster rolls... so many foods are distinctive to New England. Does food have anything to say about who we are as a region, about who we are as New Englanders? Bean-hole beans, johnnycakes, chocolate chip cookies, and pork pies -- they can be found all over the country now, but they all originally came from New England like so many of the customs and mores familiar to all. Presented by Edie Clark. A NH Humanities Council program, free and open to the public.
