Promoting, Supporting and Sustaining
Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

We hope you're enjoying this beautiful early fall! We're pleased to present our ArtsNorth e-bulletin for you and your guests, arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm details and hours prior to attending events or visiting sites. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details, and find events beyond the dates in this bulletin in our Plan-Ahead Arts Calendar. Links to both calendars are available in the Quick Links section. Please note that Arts Alliance member organizations are indicated with our member icon. We appreciate our members, and encourage you to attend their events -- and invite you, too, to join us as an individual, artist, family, business, school or institutional member (see http://aannh.org/membership.php for membership information). You can purchase or renew your membership online.

If your organization is presenting a cultural event, email details to us as early as possible at [email protected] and we'll include it in our online calendar and our email bulletins. You can simply add [email protected] to your press list. Please take the time to review your listing, both in the bulletin and the online calendar, and forward corrections to [email protected].

The submission deadline for the next bulletin,
covering October 1-21, is September 22.

Come to a Pre-Highland Games Ceilidh! "Ceilidh" is the Scottish term for an informal gathering of musicians and performers who come together for an evening of social interaction and fun. You're invited to an exciting Ceilidh, a day before the NH Highland Games, at the Papermill Theatre in Lincoln. Featured performers include the 1st Battalion Scots Guards Pipes and Drums and accordionist John Carmichael. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door or in advance at PapermillTheatre.Tix.com. We're pleased to be cooperating partners with the Games, the North Country Center for the Arts and InnSeason Resorts in presenting this program. The Games take place September 18-20 at Loon Mountain Ski Resort in Lincoln.

"Louisiana Gumbo" Program with New Orleans Jazz Park Rangers: Join us Sunday, September 20, at 2pm at the Rocks Estate, Route 302, Bethlehem, for a great afternoon of music with New Orleans National Jazz Park rangers Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes and Matt Hampsey. They'll take us on a musical journey through Louisiana roots music, from blues and gospel, zydeco, brass band, and Creole to the jazz sounds they gave birth to. Bring a dish to share, if you can, at this informal gathering -- Louisiana and New Hampshire flavors are equally welcome (jambalaya, crawfish pie, baked beans....). Local musicians are invited to bring their instruments for an informal jam session after the presentation. The program - originally scheduled for last spring but delayed by a southern storm - is part of our Community Concerts series. A donation of $10 for adults, $20 for families is suggested. All ages welcome!

Our Arts in Early Learning Program Offers Free Workshops: Early-childhood educators, care providers and parents of young children are invited to attend one of two free workshops (September 15 at 6pm, Franconia Children's Center and September 22 at 4pm, Plymouth Elementary School) being offered through our collaboration with VSA arts of NH. Trainer Deborah Stuart of VSA arts will share engaging music, movement and visual arts activities and resources linked to favorite books. These activities work well with classroom projects and goals, promote language and pre-literacy skills and meet a wide range of developmental needs. "Start with the Arts" will be used as a source for activities, and those who attend will be given lessons which they can take back with them to use as follow-up. Preregistration is requested for both workshops (823-5643 in Franconia, 536-5346 in Plymouth).

Make Instruments & Music at a Free Family Evening: Families with young children are invited to end the week with a joyous, creative musical outing on Friday, September 25 at 6pm at the Franconia Children's Center, 73 Main Street, Franconia. The children's music group "Home For Dinner" will be on hand to make simple musical instruments with you and your child and then lead everybody in a lively interactive singing session. Juice and dessert will be provided; bring sandwiches or a simple potluck to share. The evening is part of our Arts in Early Learning program, a joint venture of the Arts Alliance and VSA arts of New Hampshire. Download a flyer from our website.
