Arts, Culture and Heritage in the North Country

Happy Holidays to all! We're pleased to present our ArtsNorth e-bulletin for you and your guests, arranged by sub-regions from north to south and by date. Please be sure to confirm event details prior to attending. Use our "jump to" function (in the column to the left under the In This Issue section), which allows you to go directly to your geographic areas of interest. You can view our complete ArtsNorth calendar for additional details, and find events beyond the dates in this bulletin in our Plan-Ahead Arts Calendar. Links to both calendars are available in the Quick Links section. Please note that Arts Alliance member organizations are indicated with our member icon. We appreciate our members, and encourage you to attend their events -- and invite you, too, to join us as an individual, artist, family, business, school or institutional member (see http://aannh.org/membership.php for membership information).

If your organization is presenting a cultural event, email details to us as early as possible at events@aannh.org and we'll include it in the online ArtsNorth calendar and in our email bulletins. You can simply add events@aannh.org to your press list. This time of year is often when operating hours change. Please take time to review your listing, both in the bulletin and the online calendar, and forward corrections to events@aannh.org. The deadline for the next bulletin, covering December 18-January 7, is December 11.

Free Workshop: Teaching American History through Folk Song
Tuesday, December 9, 3pm
Stratford Public School, Stratford
http://aannh.org
Folk songs gives us everyman's perspective on history. They also offer a new way to teach language arts, music, geography, and even physical education. Common people grew the crops, went to sea, raised the children, fought the battles, waited at home and worked in the factories. Listening to the songs they sang, reflective of their lives and times, is like having an ancestor whispering in your ear. This session will introduce participants to songs from our Anglo-African-Celtic-Germanic-French traditions. Discographies and bibliographies will be available. Singing a song that put an 18th century baby to sleep, or helped a young girl drive home the cows from a 19th century pasture, is a useful way to connect with America's past. With Jeff Warner, singer, folklorist & community scholar. This free program is presented by the Arts Alliance and funded by the New Hampshire Humanities Council and is part of a two-day residency at Stratford School. Preregistration is required. Graduate credit may be arranged through Plymouth State University. Download a Registration Form from our website.

http://aannh.org/humanities/workshops.php
Teaching New Hampshire students about world cultures offers important opportunities and challenges. In this workshop we'll think together about what principles should inform this teaching and learning. What are our purposes in educating our students about cultures different from their own? In an increasingly interdependent world, how can students be inspired to think about their responsibilities as citizens, both of their own country, and of a global community as well? How can we cultivate the moral imagination, the ability to stay grounded and effective in our current situations while imagining and working towards a world that is characterized by more respect, more fairness and less violence? This workshop will be led by Dr. Cynthia Cohen, a humanities scholar who does research and practical work in the field of peacebuilding and inter-group coexistence. Breakfast & lunch $12. Presented by the Arts Alliance and funded by the New Hampshire Humanities Council. Preregistration is required. Graduate credit may be arranged through Plymouth State University. Download a Registration Form on our website.
