Collecting Stories, Connecting Communities Seminar: Educators and community members involved in heritage projects are invited to a seminar Wednesday, November 5, from 8:30am to 3pm at The Highland Center, Crawford Notch, presented by the Monadnock Institute and the New Hampshire Heritage Project as they work to develop web and print story anthologies and publication of writing by students, teachers, community members and historical societies. The Arts Alliance is pleased to be a collaborating partner in this important effort.

Idea Swap November 5 in Worcester: The New England Foundation for the Arts hosts its annual networking event for nonprofit presenting organizations to share touring project ideas that may qualify for funding from NEFA's Expeditions grant program. NH Open Doors: On November 8 and 9, discover the beauty, traditions, and craft heritage of New Hampshire. Cultivating the Field, 3rd annual institute for teaching artists at Lesley University, Cambridge, MA: This series of three connected days of professional development for artist educators (December 1, 2008, and January 16 & April 17, 2009) explores the potential of documentation as evaluation, demonstrates how organizing material in aesthetic ways can prompt reflection, illustrates how evaluating and documenting your work can enhance your effectiveness, and provides new strategies for marketing. The deadline for the next bulletin, covering November 27-December 17, is November 20.

The Arts in Early Learning: A Conference for Early-Childhood Educators, Child-Care Providers, Parents, Librarians, and Artists, is presented by the Arts Alliance & VSA arts of NH in partnership with the Plymouth State Early Childhood Studies program on Saturday, November 8, 9am to 3pm at Plymouth State University. Cost is $25 (scholarships available) and includes morning coffee and lunch. Workshops include arts activities for school, home and community settings designed to strengthen pre-literacy and literacy skills for children 2-7 and to enrich learning experiences in ways that are engaging and fun for all involved. Particular attention will be given to meeting the needs of children with developmental and learning differences. Teachers or care providers from a school or facility can receive a group rate. Family members may attend for the cost of a single registration fee. No one should miss this because of cost! Professional Development in the Humanities: We've launched new web pages dedicated to our pilot partnership with the New Hampshire Humanities Council, bringing free -- and fascinating -- professional development training in the humanities to North Country K-12 educators. The partnership includes programs funded by the Humanities Council and developed by the Arts Alliance based on the needs and interests of local schools. Many of the programs will be connected to cultural programs presented by North Country libraries, historical societies, and arts and community organizations. Educators and interested community members from around the state are invited to participate. The Latest News from the Distant Past: Teaching American History through Folk Song, Tuesday, December 9, 3:30pm, Stratford Public School, with Jeff Warner, singer, folklorist & community scholar.

Brett School Hosts 2nd Annual New England Barn Dance and Potluck Supper: The weather is getting colder and the harvest is nearing an end. It's time to put on your dancing shoes and join friends old and new for an evening of shared food, music and dancing. The Tamworth PTA, in partnership with the Arts Alliance, Sustainable Tamworth, Mountain Top Music Center and the Brett School Wellness Committee, invites you to the second annual Traditional New England Barn Dance and Potluck Supper at the K.A. Brett School, Monday, November 10, with Two Fiddles, caller Dudley Laufman and guest musicians. Local food is the theme of the 5:30 supper. Bring a dish to share -- salads, soups, appetizers and entrees -- and include a locally-grown ingredient if you can. At 6:30 we roll up the rug and kick up our heels. Area musicians and students of barn dance music who would like to play with the band are welcome. This event is free, but donations to the PTA to help fund it are very welcome. For more information, call the school at 323-7271. Homeschoolers who would like to come learn about traditional New England dancing during the school day Monday can also contact the school.

Chamber Music for an Autumn Afternoon: The Arts Alliance & the International Musical Arts Institute (IMAI) invite you to join us Sunday, November 16, at 2pm for our 8th annual house concert, "Chamber Music for an Autumn Afternoon," in Randolph, NH. Music of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bach and Rachmaninoff will be performed by IMAI musicians Matthieu Arama and Asuka Usui, violinists; Jason Fisher, violist; Harel Gietheim, cellist; and Kanako Nishikawa, pianist. Suggested donation is $25. Proceeds from this concert will be equally shared by IMAI and the Alliance. Reservations are requested - call us at 323-7302 or email [email protected].

Taiko Drummers Return to Kennett by Popular Demand: Young and old are invited to an exciting evening of Japanese taiko drumming with Odaiko New England at 7pm on Friday, November 21, at Kennett High School, North Conway. Tickets for the performance are $5 for students, $10 for adults, and $20 for families, and are available at the door or in advance from the KHS Performing Arts Department (356-4360). Proceeds will benefit the Kennett High School Music Program. The powerful sound of the taiko, combined with dynamic movement, creates an exuberant and energetic performance that is sure to broaden audiences' perspectives of Asian American art and culture. The Kennett Drumline will perform with the ensemble. The programs are part of the Arts Alliance's partnership with the school's music department and World Cultures classes.

The Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) is a grass-roots group of oil, watercolor and acrylic artists from Pittsburg, Colebrook, West Stewartstown, northern VT and Coaticook, PQ.
Barbara Rainville is the artist of the month at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital (UCVH) in Colebrook. Barbara's watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings display historical and contemporary scenes of the North Country. The artist of the month is a collaborative effort of UCVH and CRAG.
The CRAG Member Show is exhibiting at the Interpretive Center North of Colebrook on Route 3 during November and December.

Northern Forest Heritage Park preserves and interprets the history of the working forest and celebrates the multi-cultural heritage of the Great North Woods Region. Featuring a three-acre site with waterfront access and walkways, an outdoor amphitheater, a full-size replica logging camp, interactive exhibits and the Brown House Museum, built in 1853 by the H.W. Winslow Company as a boarding house for its saw-mill employees.

A character re-enactment of Dolly Copp, the first innkeeper in Pinkham Notch. A multi-disciplinary seminar which features readings, music, art and discussion. Participants will receive a free copy of the book The Children of Willesden Lane, a heart-wrenching story by Mona Golabek about her mother as a teenage girl living in Vienna, Austria in the 1940s. Golabek's mother escapes persecution by the Nazis via the Kindertransport to London, leaving her family, friends and normal life behind. She was a prodigy pianist whose music helped her cope and survive. Seminar participants will engage in her experiences through her story and her music.

Pontine Theatre's original presentation by Marguerite Matthews and Greg Gathers explores the life and work of American poet and painter Edward Estlin Cummings, a lifelong summer resident of Silver Lake. Trees for Troops Fundraiser - The Rocks has created locally-crafted, all natural birch deer this season as festive decorations and a way to help brighten the holidays for military families. The deer are made at The Rocks of birch wood, pine cones and acorns and are available for sale at The Rocks and other area businesses: Littleton Bike & Fitness and Trackside Farm & Garden Center in Littleton, and Mount Washington Resort's shop, Ladyslippers. Proceeds will benefit both the Trees For Troops program and the conservation efforts of the Society for Protection of NH Forests.

Join us for a conference for early childhood educators, care providers, parents, artists and librarians, presented in partnership with VSA arts of NH and the Plymouth State Early Childhood Studies Program. Workshops include movement, theater, music and art activities for school, home and community settings designed to strengthen pre-literacy and literacy skills for children 2-7, and to enrich learning experiences in ways that are engaging and fun for all involved. Participants will take away sample lessons and activities, as well as a wealth of user-friendly ways to link the arts to children's literature and learning.

The New Hampshire Quilt Documentation Project invites residents of the Lakes and Mountains who have old quilts, quilt tops, quilted clothing, or blocks and pieces made before 1976 to participate in an historical survey of these works. Whether made in New Hampshire or presently "living" in this state, all works are welcome. To allow time for all pieces to be examined and photographed, quilt owners must sign up for an appointment by calling Six Chimneys. All quilts will be documented free of charge, and a copy of your documentation including a picture will be available for purchase.
