Program Opportunities

Middle Eastern Music & Dance Opportunities: Persian percussionist Shamou, now living in Portland, Maine, appears November 8 at 8pm at the White Mountain School in Bethlehem. The public is invited to attend - and schools are encouraged to call the Arts Alliance if they are interested in having Shamou perform on November 6, 7 or 9. Shamou's musical career began at an early age in his native Iran, where he studied and performed with the Iranian National Ballet as a dancer. He began his formal music training in Tehran, studied with teachers from the Royal College of Music in London and completed his training at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Shamou was the lead singer and percussionist with several award-winning world music ensembles. Audiences learn the links between different cultures through the global language of music during his energizing and interactive performances.

And contact us for information about Middle Eastern music and dance programs with Vermont's 35th Parallel and dancer Alia Thabit. Described by Showcase Magazine as one of New England's most innovative ensembles, 35th Parallel takes the listener on a sinuous journey around the globe. Multi-instrumentalists Mac Ritchey and Gabe Halberg weave a sonic spell, winding a musical trail through the Middle East, North India, North Africa and the Mediterranean. Thabit, a dancer/choreographer of Lebanese and Palestinian descent, incorporates traditional and contemporary influences, colorful costumes, and dynamic music to present a wide range of Middle Eastern dance styles. Her performances demystify the culture and art of the Middle East and bring the pleasure of movement into classrooms. Alia is also available for workshops, performances and classes, with special funding support through the New England States Touring program. Let us know if your school or community is interested in programming.
